I am! Or at least I’ll try. I have the new flatmate coming over to pick up keys so might make them some too!

Who else is in this bitch is getting all pancaked up?

I am! Or at least my wife is. No blueberries in Sainsburys this weekend though :(

oh the humanity!

I am pathetic and unadventurous. I just really like sugar and lemon!

We be! Man I do good toss (pancakes)

Can’t see why not.

You can use frozen blueberries, it’s difficult to tell the difference in pancakes

How do I shot pancake?

(I’ve got all this maple syrup from my mum, and no idea what else to do with it—but then I’ll have a litre of maple syrup sitting around during lent that I will have to eat up. aRgh.)

I’m making pancakes! I’m almost tempted to do fancy stewed apple and whipped cream stuff with them, but I probably won’t bother. I do have frozen raspberries, blackberries, and cranberries knocking about though. Yum.

I’m a lemon-and-sugar traditionalist.

I may go on a blueberry hunt this lunchtime! Thanks for the tip re frozen.

We have lemon & sugar as well!

Blueberries are down to £1.49 a punnet in tesco!

How can you make pancakes on Fats Tuesday when you’re not giving up anything for Lent? this is so backwards!

Woo! I wonder if Tesco Metro has them? I will soon find out...

Oy vey but think where the blueberries are coming from at this time of year.

Well it’s not going to be out of a rabbit’s bum. (is it??)

pancakes, england style

1 egg to 4 tablespoons of flour, to half a pint of milk

add the liquid ingredients slowly to the flour to avoid lumps. leave to stand for an hour before using.

When I was little, I used to think that the instruction to “stand for one hour” in recipes meant that *I* had to stand there for an hour.

How can you make pancakes on Fats Tuesday when you’re not giving up anything for Lent?

this is a v important point!

I will probably be giving up pancakes for a while.

Maybe, if you don’t eat pancakes for a while after Shrove Tuesday, you’re actually giving up pancakes for Lent.

ha! x-post!

LOL at little CJ!

How can you make pancakes on Fats Tuesday when you’re not giving up anything for Lent? this is so backwards!

I am! See the other thread!

I don’t believe in Jesus, but I do believe in pancakes.

How can you make pancakes on Fats Tuesday when you’re not giving up anything for Lent?

Welcome to atheism. I can do whatever I like! No-one’s judging me!

Also I am putting money in a Trocaire box, like I said.

Wasn’t Christmas enough? And then Easter with the bunnies and the creme eggs?!?!? And now you Atheists have to have Fats Tuesday, too?!?!? God, why not take Ash Wednesday? Or Monday Thursday, while you’re at it?

Ha ha, actually Ash Wednesday is a pretty popular holiday, my mum was complaining about how they had to have all chaplains on deck at the hospital on Ash Wednesday coz everyone wants ashes, practising religious or not.

What if they get it all mixed up? And she ends up giving Anglican ashes to a Roman Catholic or a Methodist or worse?

I am! (xxpost)

Also it’s not religious, it’s cos I is so fat and ting.

why make pancakes? ihop has free short stacks tomorrow

“free short stacks” sounds like a campaign to release a wrongly imprisoned midget wrestler.

What if they get it all mixed up? And she ends up giving Anglican ashes to a Roman Catholic or a Methodist or worse?

— in the case of masonic attack (kateotheremai...) (webmail), Today 1:12 PM. (kate) (later)

i guess the catholic wont go to heaven.

not to mention those nasty burn marks

Bring it on, god lover.

Kevin, for heaven’s sake. Unless you’ve eaten eight tons of lard since the last time I saw you, you are not fat. Your clothes might be a little tighter than you’d like, but you are not fat.

Worse, they’d go to Anglican Heaven.

x-post

YIKES

ihop sadly doesn’t even live up to the first word of it’s acronym

Your clothes might be a little tighter than you’d like, but you are not fat.

Okay, I’m not fat but yeah, the clothes are a lot tighter thank I’d like! I suppose I just feel bad about it so melodrama kicks in!

Methodists don’t do the whole cultist ash thing.

lol @ “Monday Thursday”

I’m not sure that my mum will be checking the credentials of people in the hospital to see that they are entitled to Anglican ashes or not.

I thought you’d typed “Angela’s ashes” there, Kate.

Pancake topping ideas Plz. I am going to supermarket this lunch to stock up. Ideas from thread so far: Froxen blackberries, frozen cranberries, lemon, and sugar. What have I missed?

nutella.

spinach and ricotta.

preserved ginger in syrup and vanilla icecream.

‘dried chicken meat’

sieved cocoa, nutmeg, cinnamon and icing sugar.

candied rose petals.

For years all I had in pancakes was Golden Syrup, but lately I have got more adventurous, delving into maple syrup, Nutella, lemon & sugar, etcetera. This year I may try honey & lemon. I have no Nutella though. Hmmm. I must buy some.

Nutella is ick! That sieved cocoa sounds great, I’ve got some Green & Black drinking choc, that could work.

candied rose petals.

You had me up until here!

Breakfast: berries w/maple syrup

Savoury: spinach and goat’s cheese or ham and mushroom with melted cheddar cheese.

Sweet: banana and nutella or maple syrup and pecans

I’m gonna try crunchy peanut butter this year. Maybe peanut butter + nutella. That might be awesome.

We’re having people round for a pancake party.

coconut syrup!

apparently i am having some pancakes later. that’s cool.

sometimes i think ‘pancakes are nice, why do we only eat them one day a year?’ i mean it’s pretty crazy if you think about it.

In my bag, I have a massive oilcan of PURE VERMONT MAPLE SYRUP for putting on pancakes tonight. I am fairly excited.

>> sometimes i think ‘pancakes are nice, why do we only eat them one day a year?’ i mean it’s pretty crazy if you think about it.

That’s what my wife said. Silly Britishes. Luckily she does make them for breakfast some weekends!

although I’m not a big mardi gras celebrator I have lived almost my entire life in the southern US and have never seen pancakes associated with fat tuesday except on ilx. is this mostly a European thing? And yes pancakes are staples here. They were a regular weeknight dinner when I was a kid.

I AM SO CONFUSED BY LEMON! Is this plain lemon juice? Do you sift the powdered sugar over it afterward, or mix it into the juice for sweetening? Why would you involve a citrus fruit at all when there is mayple syrup in the world?

haha, yeah, Maple Syrup

but i have also discovered Date Butter—which is basically just what happens when you smash up some fresh (iranian or equiv) dates and mix them with softened butter. it is freakin great (if you like dates. and butter.) good on pancakes, toast, biscuits, a spoon, etc

does anyone watch trading spouses? last night there were some raw diet hippies on there who brushed their teeth with a mixture of butter and clay. It wasn’t pretty.

hahaha wtf

i understand the clay part, but butter? b/c of, uh, lactose?

okay i have decided to make pancakes for dinner (wheat-free pancakes tho), pos more like crepes

i even have apples and could make a dutch-style apple crepe-pancake whoa

We had: gruyere and spring greens on wholewheat, maple syrup and spring greens on plain and crepe suzette (flambéed bandy orange caramel) on plain. I am having some with sugar and lemon juice this morning for breakfast.

We had: Lemon, sugar and syrup (not on same pancake). It was bleedin’ lovely! Great welcome for new flatmate. Had with a slightly too warm Syrah but what can one do! Ended up making them for late returning s.o. at half eleven. Bit tired at the old desk as a result!

PS. Ed, that’s just too showy. Jealous, moi?

the sugar vs lemon combination is fantastic. laurel you should try, you will believe! i wouldn’t bother with powdered sugar tho, just regular sugar.

It’s really easy to do. squeeze an orange into a pan add a couple of tablespoons of brandy. Dissolve as much dark brown (muscavado/molasses) sugar as it will take then bring to the boil gently until it caramelises in thickens.

Make the pancake the pour a little of the caramel on. Add a tablespoon of brandy to the pan and ignite as it boils, fold and serve with whipped cream.

They go on FIRE!!! It is impressive.

Ha ha, my brother actually had it written into his pre-nuptual contract that he was to have pancakes every Saturday morning.

But of course. So simple, forgive me my terrible laziness ;) (xpost)

No! That is the best use of one of them (apart from protecting one’s money) ever!
