is pancake day much of an American tradition? i remember having to explain it to a US-based friend a couple of years ago (though as I then had to explain Lent—in the context of ‘no we cannot have pancakes next week’—maybe he was just being deliberately obtuse).

Just do what I do—substitute molasses for sugar in your regular pancake recipe and add ginger, cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg to the dry ingredients.
Presto, gingerbread pancakes.
Also, go to Central Market and get the bulk real maple syrup but use the labelmaker to price it as something much cheaper.

Magnolia has real maple syrup, but you pay like $1.50 extra for it. Completely worth it.
I made pancakes today, huzzah. And as a non-religious type, I do it not because it is Shrove Tuesday or Fat Tuesday or whatever, but because it is PANCAKE DAY, DAY OF THE PANCAKE, when we sing and dance and eat stuff with Jif Lemon on it. Oh yes.

Actually, I used real lemon juice too, but thanks to the wonders of advertising I can’t help but associate: “don’t forget the pancakes on Jif Lemon Day”.

OMG I just remembered Pancake Day from when I lived in the UK! Have no idea what it pertained to, I just know we made a ton of pancakes!

Those things up there in the astronaut suit are pancakes. Pancakes you get on pancake day are pancakes on pancake day only because I never have them any other time of year so have no need for another name for them. They’re a bit like crepes, I guess. Drop scones are also pancakes to me. I know all these words, yet somehow they all come out as pancake. But I always know what I’m talking about.
Sugar and lemon is the best pancake filling. Ice-cream and honey rum is pretty good too though.
