thought on polls: why have an end date? for the ones like this where you see the results before you vote, and where you can change your vote afterward. would rather just have it be open! should change over time. like, neil fucking young. i’m gonna do this today and in 20 years i’ll do it again (and the on the beach title track is still gonna be what i have to return to)

also side note but it’s interesting about what makes people (including me!) not like time fades away nearly so much as all the adjacent material!

I like this idea. I have no idea how possible it would be to do, but giving the poll runner that option would be great.

Poll has completed: rank the neil young albums

the coolest bit about the new poll stuff is the distribution of votes graph for the ranked choice polls, that’s really neat and interesting

I love all the new poll stuff, yet I’m going to miss the slow roll-out of results and the great customized graphics that poll runners sometimes make. (of course, there’s nothing stopping that from continuing yet...)

I think year-end polls, artist discography polls and genre polls will still lend themselves to email ballot format. Poll limit is still 50 options in the new code.

Removing another post that I put in the wrong thread

I would like ILM polls to show who voted for what. Maybe an option for anonymous polls on ILE as you say could be different? I don’t know how hard that would be for Keith.

I would prefer that to be left up to the poll starter.

Elvis, William, I can possibly help with this stuff. I’m not really that familiar with your polls—not in close quarters, but what I did was 100% influenced by how (at least what I casually see of them) you ran them.

The 50 limit takes ten seconds to change, so if you need more, just say the word. Other stuff is likely a bunch more work, but as I say, the work to date was totally influenced by your work, so just let me know. Not everything is easy/practical, but we can definitely have a chat about that to arrive at something that might work better for you.

Interesting possibilities... Led Zeppelin only put out 70-something tracks in their lifetime iirc, so that might not be so unwieldy. Would it be possible to do a ranked choice from a larger list but be limited to a smaller number on each ballot? Like, dragging and dropping from a list of 100 but max 25 on each ballot? Side-polls could get messier, though, with separate poll threads for tracks, albums, productions (like in Eno’s case). Email ballots might be easier in the end but the possibilities are v. interesting — thanks!

Anything like that I’m sure is possible, I just need some time to wrap my head around it. If you have a vision of where you want it to be, let’s set up a thread and chat about it—it’ll take some back and forth.

I suspect right now though, my time will be taken up by getting the new thing into a shape that people like, though, so just please bear with me!

Just wait until somebody wants to poll Jandek or Merzbow’s entire output.

Or William runs a zappa poll hehe

Well the limits are there to prevent abuse, but obviously can be relaxed if people legitimately want stuff.

Well, legit Artist song polls definitely should be. And I do like the idea of William’s where the poll starter can set how many votes a user gets.

I think Dan was looking for something like that too. We all know how busy you are though.

It’s cool. I want to help people make the thing they want, I just suspect there will be a bunch of demands for the next couple of months, but even this short chat is helping to clarify stuff in my head. I know it always seems obvious to those who are steeped in these things, but it isn’t to me, so perhaps we can use the next couple of months to work that out and then I can hopefully help.

I also understand that automated solutions are not always the answer; part of the fun might be the ‘manual’ side of things, so obviously that’s cool too.

Yeah, a lot of the fun of a larger ballot poll is the multi-day rollout, the custom artwork, the side polls...

Yeah can get that, and it’s disproportionate (and not really helpful) to try and automate all that. I just mean if I can help then I will.

I think year-end polls, artist discography polls and genre polls will still lend themselves to email ballot format. Poll limit is still 50 options in the new code.

yeah i don’t see this replacing those at all, it’s just another option for forum polls which will have its uses here and there and that’s fine imo.

this interface isn’t really suited to trying to order 50 options (which is part of what i was interested in seeing here) but i don’t think it really needs to be a priority to make it work for that, that’s a real edge case. increasing the max number of poll options is fine though, and having the poll starter be able to set min & max votes for ranked choice would have some use.

trying to make something that could effectively automate the eoy polls etc. would be a much more complex endeavour with its own design challenges and i don’t see that as something that it really make sense to try to achieve through this sort of framework? doesn’t seem like a priority to me

UFO, I would agree, but I know it would be gut feel. Some things are definitely best left human... All I’m saying is that I am willing to help, if we think that’s the right thing.

having run a bunch of those polls, by far the most tedious thing for a human to do is keep the spotify playlists for nominations up to date
