I thought “Pumped Up Kicks” would make the final Billboard list but otherwise expected.
yeah me too — #13 not too far off though
i kind of think as a “banger” as something you can dance to

nope
Is “Firework” not a banger?
(I thangyew)
As long as you can nod your head to it...
someone post that informative youtube video about how white ppl can’t kmt irl
that Billboard list is making me rethink my policy of letting my wife control the radio stations in the car; that is basically what we heard all year in the mornings
“Firework” honestly makes me think of the noise made when you pull the sides of a balloon’s mouthpiece and slowly let the air out.
“Firework” is self-evidently the worst song on that list IMO
“firework” is a contender for worst song EVER imo
and “Super Bass” is self-evidently the best.

i would agree w/ both of these things except for the thing where “ET” is also on the list
I haven’t heard Super Bass, but I bet I’d like it.
i would agree w/ both of these things except for the thing where “ET” is also on the list
lol, I have much time for “ET” completely against my better judgment; I think I just like Katy Perry the most when she’s being a stompy non-preachy monster
“super bass” was the song i had most in-the-wild moments to this year. rapping every word at so many house parties <3
Just the other day one of our students said, amazed, “You like ‘Super Bass’ and not Drake?”
I’d probably rank the Billboard songs like this:
1 “Rolling In The Deep”—Adele
2 “Party Rock Anthem”—Lmfao Featuring Lauren Bennett & Goonrock
6 “Grenade”—Bruno Mars
4 “E.T.”—Katy Perry Featuring Kanye West
7 “F**K You (Forget You)”—Cee Lo Green
8 “Super Bass”—Nicki Minaj
9 “Moves Like Jagger”—Maroon 5 Featuring Christina Aguilera
5 “Give Me Everything”—Pitbull Featuring Ne-Yo, Afrojack & Nayer
10 “Just Can’t Get Enough”—The Black Eyed Peas
3 “Firework”—Katy Perry
If I ever hear Moves Like Jagger again I’m gonna fucking punch a wall
should be a poll imo
i like the chorus of that song a lot, don’t really like xtina on it at all but what else is new
Someone at work keeps singing it at me because they know it winds me up.
xposts oh you cunt.
when i was in russia i heard “moves like jagger” like literally 5 times a day. i kind of...came round to it :(
basically exactly what miami did to me 12 months previously with “only girl in the world”
Thanks for breaking my browser.
just change the lyric to “louis jagger” in your head, might make it funnier.
it could be worse, if I had mod powers here I could have made them all autoplay
the only one of those songs that i know for sure i’ve heard is fuck you; i think maybe i’ve heard party rock anthem and firework also.
oh i’ve heard super bass too, nevermind.
A nation thanks god that you were exposed to kryptonite then.
xxpost
Just the other day one of our students said, amazed, “You like ‘Super Bass’ and not Drake?”
Was the angle Drake-love or pop-hate?
really “Firework” is the only one I find unbearable; the one that gets consistently underrated is “Grenade”
“If you like that thing, then there’s no reason why you can’t love Drake too.”
Super Bass is far and away the best thing on that Billboard list.
“Super Bass” suffers a little from the start-stops and the bridge is somewhat disconnected from the rest of the song
only one that comes close is “give me everything”
is it wrong that I look at that Billboard list and think to myself “LOL @ Blake Shelton”?
I don’t mind “Give Me Everything” now, thanks to our Clear Channel station playing it every 14 seconds.
Although I tend to think of Super Bass as an end-credits mallpop song rather than a rap record.
gimme a few minutes and i’ll do a poll of the top 50 hot 100 songs where we can take this convo
“Super Bass” is prob. best on that list, though my weakness for disco-pop means I also like “Rolling in the Deep” and “Moves Like Jagger.”
I hate Katy Perry’s voice on “Firework,” but I think it’s a well-constructed pop song.
seriously, the “MO-oo-OO-oo-oo-oo-ves” part gives me some weird pokemon j-pop vibes that i dont really understand why
ay-yi-yi
I’m your little butterfly
With the moo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-ooves like Jagger
“super bass” is the best big pop single of the year—everyone still goes crazy when it comes on at parties/clubs/any public space. could’ve been “countdown” though if beyoncé had given it a proper push. ;_;
I hate Katy Perry’s voice on “Firework,” but I think it’s a well-constructed pop song.
yeah totally. actually I don’t even mind her voice on it. I’m a little surprised everybody hates it.
Moves Like Jagger and ET are awful though.

Wow, people really seem to like that Peaking Lights album. Didn’t really do much for me, although i only heard it once
Epic third place for Lulu on yr list Matt.
psychic savagery
Glad to see that Cosmin TRG album making an appearance.
Peaking Lights didn’t do much for me either, and I bought the fucker
The Wire’s Tony Herrington lays out their voting process in deep detail over here: http://www.thewire.co.uk/themire/2011/12/suffering-through-suffrage-compiling-the-wires-rewind-charts
Peaking Lights is growing on me, I only gave it half a listen but started coming back to it now. It’s cool.
heard the Pinch & Shackleton playing in store last time I was in Other Music and it sounded good to me

I didnt like 936 for the longest time, but then I listened to it on headphones and the dubbiness came alive to me: it’s one of my favorites now...
but yeeeeah M@tt; putting Brute Heart in #2!!
Only just got around to hearing the Legowelt and it’s pretty sweet.

Collapse Into New made top 20 in cutting-edge publication Rolling Stone
lol Collapse into Now
Firework“—Katy Perry> ”moves like jagger“
both those songs are a pockmark on music. pure abominations. they make me want to stab screwdrivers into my ears. Moves Like Jagger is highly irritating, but I think Fireworks is the pinnacle of offensive pop in 2011.
I’m more offended by Bon Iver
http://www.billboard.com/#/features/the-beat-generation-electronic-dance-music-1005652552.story
But why, after 30 years of relative obscurity, was 2011 finally dance music’s time? Theories abound: the equalizing quality of the Internet and the social-media generation’s intense drive to share everything; a general staleness of other formerly dominant genres, like rock and hip-hop; a generational opt-out from recession anxiety; the rise of Las Vegas as an international dance destination; a few key pop figures stealthily championing the cause.
“ Lady Gaga and Black Eyed Peas had a lot to do with it,” Oakenfold says. “They took the essence of dance music and put it into top 40 records. It was there without people even knowing it.”
Lots of Billboard detail on Skrillex and Swedish House Mafia...
here’s the BBC Music writers’ individual albums of the year which I know everyone was very keen to see http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/bbcmusic/2011/12/bbc_music_writers_albums_of_20.html
there are a few ilx posters in there and also some of the absolute worst choices imaginable

1. The Weeknd—House of Balloons
2. The Weeknd—Thursday
3. StewRat—Spring
4. Tyler, the Creator—Goblin
5. Frank Ocean—nostalgia,ULTRA
that list is my nemesis
Pretty sure this was the best list there:
Ian Winwood
1. The King Blues—Punk & Poetry
2. The Decemberists—The King Is Dead
3. Arctic Monkeys—Suck It & See
4. Frank Turner—England Keep My Bones
5. Lou Reed and Metallica—Lulu
Wait, there’s a band called New Look? Or is there an album of all the mallectro they play in New Look shops, because I would totally buy that record.
going thru that pitchfrk list; props to J0rdan for the write up alongside the Kendrick track.
Melissa Bradshaw from that BBC writers’ list has a 2010 album in her choices. Buffoon.
She has two if you count Diddy Dirty Money as 2010 as well as Shangaan Electro.
Ah yes, I did actually wonder about that as I remembered it showing in the ilx poll. Couldn’t remember if that was a single or album, though. Shangaan Electro wasn’t even late 2010 as far as I recall!
Pretty sure this was the best list there:

2. The Decemberists—The King Is Dead
3. Arctic Monkeys—Suck It & See
4. Frank Turner—England Keep My Bones
5. Lou Reed and Metallica—Lulu
We can debate the merits of the other records, but Frank Turner is truly beyond the pale.
there is suddenly the very real possibility that my top 3 albums will all be in the guardian’s top 4...
New Look is dope imo. A warm, minimalist synth-pop type thing.
Don’t know who you voted for Lex, but there’s been no Adele, Florence, PJ Harvey or err, M83 or Elbow yet. Can’t think what else.

lex I think it’s a measure of the infectiousness of your enthusing that you appear to be incredibly good at winning over people around you to your likes. This will be quite a coup if it comes off.
i don’t really think i can take credit for people liking beyoncé and pj harvey. really it was NID that those three albums would be top 10 (just based on other guardian writers’ taste), just didn’t expect beyoncé and katy b to go top 4.
actually i’m quite spectacularly bad at winning people over to my personal likes that don’t have momentum from elsewhere.
Not getting at anyone but Beyonce, PJ Harvey and Katy B doesn’t seem surprising for a Guardian list
Well yeah, what lex said
xxpost well you have heaps of direct influence on my list but then that’s nothing new.
Feeling a bit “hmmm” on New Look but that’s probably one to debate on the “arty electronica with girl vocals” thread.
After last year’s ILM tracks poll I don’t think anyone should doubt Lex’s powers.
I guess I should mention that P&J ballots sent this weekend.
