The Vampire Lestat (Interview with the Vampire S03) (Netflix)
The first two seasons of Interview with the Vampire were fun, but season 3 is where things really take off. The point of view shifts from Louis de Pointe du Lac (Louis Anderson) to Lestat “The Cuntessa” de Lioncourt (Sam Reid). The title is now officially The Vampire Lestat, although it’s really just the third season of an ongoing series and therefore can’t be watched on its own. The style changes along with it. And what better way to represent Lestat’s enormous ego, his (often misplaced) pretensions, his fake narcissistic charisma, and his godlike, amphetamine-fueled physique than a glam rock musical with over-the-top production design that jumps through time like crazy? So, it’s got a nice, high dose of Ken Russell vibes. Reid gets the part and always acts at full throttle. We also get a nice addition to the cast in the form of Lestat’s mother Gabriella (Jennifer Ehle), turned into a vampire by him personally, after which they began an incestuous relationship.
Because, of course.
Reid’s divine physique yielded another amusing bonus via the YouTube algorithm: Anderson and Reid reading “thirst tweets,” with Anderson doubled over in laughter and Reid slowly sinking into the ground:
The fact that Lestat is trying to make a career in glam rock in 2025 provides plenty of great jokes for me as a music lover, especially coming from the interviewer—who’s also an old-school rocker (Eric Bogosian, who’s also excellent). “Already 800 people! Over there, Post Malone and Jelly Roll are playing to 50,000. You should’ve gotten face tattoos!”, “I watched for three minutes and then put on the real T-Rex on Spotify,” and “Deep lyrics, especially the part where it goes ‘Ooh ooh, wah wah.’” Of course, the glam rock haters at Pitchfork gave it a 3.2. I have to say: the music seems deliberately written to be, on the one hand, a good pastiche of the genre, but on the other hand, completely ridiculous.
