which means it needs some pitbull
I feel confident that I can find something a little more interesting than Pitbull. I just need to check out the playcounts on iTunes. A year is a long time to remember something.
john have you heard this song? i only heard it this morning but i feel like it’s in your wheelhouse:
Yes! Of the songs on the Pitchfork singles list that I hadn’t heard before, that’s definitely one of the ones that I liked best.
oh duh same place i heard it. i downloaded the album but have only listened to the first three songs, of which that one is clearly the best. i also downloaded the unknown mortal orchestra album based on their song on the pfork list (“ffunny ffrends”), the album’s a little same-y but the tom vek fans on this thread might like it, same kinda lo-fi funk drum loops with indie songs on top of them:
The second half of the Sandro Perri reminds me of Arthur Russell a bit.
And yeah, I liked that song, too. And the Thundercat.
so the marriott hotel downstairs has a little illy coffee bar in their lobby, which also has a fireplace, and every day i think maybe i should go down there at lunch and get a coffee and sit by their fireplace, and today might be the day i actually do it. unless they kick me out for not being a hotel guest.
That sounds cool: did you do it?
this coffee bar is ILLY
still waiting on whether or not i’ll be invited to chicago for a final interview this month or not, but i got some good news just now. i had been despondent because i did the interview a week or two back and still haven’t heard back, but it turns out that they interviewed 24 other people and just finished the process late last week. and just now, they called one of my references and apparently seemed impressed (fools!!). *crosses fingers*
hmm well it was more just like paying $4 + tip to drink a cup of coffee in a hotel lobby, and the chairs next to the fireplace were reserved, so it was mostly just overpriced and weird. i think the illy coffee bar is just in the morning, at lunch it turns into more of a bar.
good luck z_s
suerte to you, ZS — and zip it with the “fools” business!!
what what
thank god
so bored 2day
i cheated and added a fourth song to the spreadsheet
greg kott named the serengeti album his no. 1 best album by a chicago artist in 2011
I’m so grumpy today. grump grump grump
sarah is too, you should be in a grumpy club.
i’m doing pretty well. things are quiet at work because of holidays and one of our members sent a letter (actual snail mail) to our president highlighting some research i did for him so that was pretty cool.
my present shopping is DONE
this may be the earliest I have ever completed this bs
I am happy
sorry for happiness in the face of grumpitude, you can have some if you like
I am not grumpy in a way that begrudges others happiness. I’m just tired and kind of cold and having trouble concentrating so I feel like I’m working uphill against the wind and a few people in my life (none of you wonderful people) are irritating the crap out of me.
I have one more gift to buy for my mother, and I have no idea what to get her. It doesn’t need to be anything fancy—just a small secondary gift to even everybody out. I’m drawing a blank. I’m also slightly hampered by not wanting to pack/ship anything too complicated.
I always like buying little kitchen and food goodies for my mom — flavored vinegar/oil, or spices, candies, just generally ingredients she can’t get out in the boonies where they live. this year she’s getting a couple of pounds of israeli couscous to supplement her main present (a book)
we’re not doing a lot of presents this year (except for evie and her cousin) but we still need to make pralines this weekend to give out
No one get me anything. Thanks.
The couscous is a neat gift.
I just bought her something—a mounted heart-shaped map of Chicago.
I was super grumpy at my useless umbrella and completely inaccurate bustracker this morning.
This is what I got. I am posting it because I think it’s kind of precious, and also I miss my mom:

you guys i am a total failure at getting people to learn things
i’ll take a little bit of grumpy if it means not feeling like everything i do is totally pointless
still, i can almost see a little tiny light i’m going to make it shine if it’s the last thing i do
Sorry Leaguechera. You are a hero, even if you don’t feel like it right now. (No sarcasmo.)
Jenny, that map is pretty cool.
Good luck, ZS.
Good luck, everyone.
I’m watching Beavis and Butthead, Season 1 on Netflix streaming. I wish it had music videos.
Commerce updates:
1. INSANITY: This Will be a Walgreens That Has a Sushi Bar and Nail Salon
“INSANITY” is actually pretty OTM.
2. The Bally’s in the Century Mall was purchased by L.A. Fitness. I bet this means no more unbelievable $12/month membership.
ty 4 yr post
You know what is very satisfying? Seeing Isaac destroyed in Children of the Corn. I really want to stuff that kid’s squawking face with corn until he ——
shit. As I was typing that, the little shit came back from the corn.
FUCK I hate that kid’s face and voice.
yknow. that video for water 3 has increased its views by nearly 100% since i put it in our spreadsheet! it was at 44 when i c/p the link and now it’s at 85!
seriously, i just bought that record like a week ago but i liked it so much that i put it in there because i knew no one else would listen to it otherwise.
wtg guys.
i feel better btw — yesterday was a rough one but i am on the upswing for sure. teaching is just really demoralizing some/much of the time.
eh, that’s an exaggeration
still, lots of hard work sometimes does not yield anything resembling the desired result
but that’s ok, happens to everyone i guess.
Teachers should get far more respect, adulation, and pay.
i don’t even count when people think about “teachers” — but i can tell the students who had good teachers in high school and the ones who didn’t, that’s for sure. the vocab section is what really bummed me out.
anyway
ALMOST DONE
like metaphorically 5 more min of work (starting now) and i will reach the finish line. but you guys know how i feel about racing, so i am taking my sweet time.
i’m going to assume jenny’s also feeling better today because now i feel like crap
And the universe retains balance.
i’m going to assume jenny’s also feeling better today because now i feel like crap
I do, actually. I am sorry you don’t. :(
i deserve it for being overly positive yesterday. negative karma.
stay posi guys
Stay poz.
my exams are totally buoying my spirits today — somehow a magic wand touched them and made them able to write clearly and accurately (compared to yesterday, which can only be described as a total grammar bloodbath) things will be ok!
like soon, maybe within the HOUR!
really i just need some sleep. been sleeping like crap all week.
Stay poz.
OK.
Jenny, I cun’t believe you didn’t comment on the bizzaro Walgreens coming to your work hood.
i need some sleep too. man, like 4–5 hrs a night? i am turning into a crazy person.
xp I tried to click the link and it didn’t go anywhere so I forgot about it. I’ll probably get my nails done there.
Our power just went out in our office for the third time in two weeks.
I haven’t been sleeping well either. Our bedroom gets really hot when the temps are over like 38 and I think that’s why.
Oh, weird. The URL contained the sandbox url + the correct one. Anyway, it’s going to be a Walgreens w/ sushi, hair salon, and wine bar. There is a Duane Reade in NYC that is similar—it is simply *opulent*—marble floors and columns, luxe boutiques, etc. Like Nieman Marcus or something.
loving the use of “jizz” in this title/url

also there’s another article in the same series that details the use of gjetost, R’s favorite scandinavian sweet goat cheesey product

i feel like everyone on ilx is teaming up to troll me today. i should do something else but i’m too tired and bored.
I am not saying they aren’t, but when I feel that way, it usually means I need to take a break from ILX at large. Also you’re tired so you may not be as impervious to the slings and arrows of loltrolls on ILX. Also, do you want me and Jesse to go take care of anybody for you?
no it’s definitely because i’m tired and grouchy, it’s the usual annoying people but getting under my skin more than usual
the sandbox breeds that sort of thing w/o the everpresent threat of the sb
alternately spend some quality time gossiping about it via email
(haha not that i would ever do that haha)
haha
haha
lol
(the “haha” was sarcastic, the “lol” was sincere)
i have been bitching about people (not on this thread) to jesse on gchat, since he’s the only person aside from sarah who talks to me on gchat
oh this is probably not the best time to tell you this but it is a positive thing so i hope it lifts your spirits a little
i shared (via link) our best of 2011 doc with a few other ilxors in the outloud room and they thought it was a novel way to collect and share recommendations AND they thought our recommendations were interesting
or at least that’s what they said and i choose to take them at their word
piranhanananananananananananananananananananaaaaaaaaaaas
This is a great shot of Chicago. It’s a view you don’t often see. In fact, I had to look at it for a while before I was sure it was Chicago.

certainly not a recent shot
Where is that?
It’s really compressed, which is probably throwing you off a little.
You’re looking south down Franklin. The train is leaving Ogilvie Transportation Center. The black shiny building is Citicorp, and the you can see an El station on Lake St.
My guess is Ogilvie Transportation Center, and the street is Clinton (looking south).
Oh. Yes, I guess it is Clinton, not Franklin.
I was going to guess Ogilvie because it’s downtown, there are a lot of Metra trains, and it’s not Union Station.
Neat!
xp obv!
Wait — I meant to say “My earlier post was obviously a x-post.” I didn’t mean to say “Obviously!” as an x-posted retort to Jesse.
Your meaning was clear.
just got an email about the chicago job. sounds like they really want me—in Louisville. :-/
i’m going to call at 9am and try to persuade them that i’m much more suited for the chicago job (which is true—it involves enviro/energy efficiency work; louisville’s is about developing a regional export strategy), but my chances just went down to about 0.42%
fuck. i spent so much time the last few months working on this fucking thing
anyway that picture jesse posted above is beautiful, really miss chicago, hope to return some day
I hope you are able to convince them that Chicago is the place for you! But if you take the job in Louisville, you will be a lot warmer, so there is that.
louisville is pretty cool iirc
you will be near mammoth cave too, so there’s that
i’d be pretty excited about that tbh
Does it do any good to try and contact the CTA about bus complaints? Second time this week I’ve waited more than 40 minutes for a bus that’s supposed to come every 20–22 minutes. Today I finally gave up and took a cab to Howard because I was freezing. Bustracker, which is normally good, was virtually useless today. When I got to the stop it said 43 minutes to next bus, which was obviously not right. Then it jumped down to a more reasonable 20, but every time it got down close to about 10 minutes it jumped back up to 24 or 28.
Omg I’m at our closing arguments in federal court & a skunk just walked into the courtroom.
liveblog the entire experience please
The judge banged the gavel and said “ODOR IN THE COURT.”
zing!
Jon- it would be a public service if you contacted them. Who knows how much they pay attention. Maybe contact the blog “Going Public.”
ZS, that stinks. Louisville is no substitute, but it’s pretty.
well, i’m not accepting that interview—the job in that position doesn’t have anything to do with environment, so it doesn’t really get me anywhere.
all of these 5 positions (there’s one in the mayor’s office in 5 cities) involve taking a big pay cut, so i’m only willing to accept the one that lets me work on energy efficiency (the chicago one). there’s still a chance i could get offered an interview for the chicago job. it’s just that they’re having trouble finding people that have applied that are willing to take the louisville position, so they checked with me to see if i was willing to go for it.
Oh, I don’t think that means you’re out of the running for Chicago then. I think it just means they are asking everyone they want to hire to please oh please move to fucking Kentucky please. Not “Move to KY or gtfo.”
yeah, that’s what i’m hoping. but still, i’m assuming that the competition for the chicago position is most intense. they’re trying to identify a “final round” of interviewees that would include 3 people vying for each of the 5 positions. the other cities are atlanta, louisville, memphis and new orleans. i made it to the initial first round of 25 people, but now i’m trying to squeeze into that final 3 for Chicago.
whoa, just got this email yaaaaaaayuh!!
“Dear Zach,
We are pleased to inform you that you have been invited to a final-round interview with M*** N**** for the Bl00mberg Inn0vation D3livery Fellowship in Chicago.”
!!!!!!!
Congrats!
thanks! although i still have two more people to annihilate in gladiatorial interview combat. i’m hoping i’m the only crazy enough to fly to chicago for an interview in early january!
o man, this would be v cool
i had JUST slugged a high noon-trippel brew when i got that email, too, since i was feeling really dejected and it’s my day off. i hope they don’t call me in the next few hours!
That’s awesome!
if they called right now i’d be like
hello job
yes, this is dog
<3 that meme
I would drink all of this beers with Z S.
