i guess i should be happy i’ll be moving in the summer
Maaaaaaybe. If we’d not screwed up our move-out date last summer, we would have had to move on the hottest day of the year during which the temp was above 100. Moving in summer is not without its potential pitfalls. But then again, moving ANY time is pretty much an exercise in suck.
We moved to Chicago from Greensboro, NC in August, but it was a bizarrely cold August. I had moved with the assumption that I could augment my southern climate wardrobe in time for winter but when we got here, I was pretty sure I was going to freeze to death and die before Halloween.
I do not feel well at all. I want to go home.
Why is there no PDF reader installed on this computer? WHY TELL ME WHY
oh yeah? i’ll be moving (most likely, it’s not official yet) from chapel hill. nc natives unite!
I’m actually from Delaware, but Jeff is from eastern NC and we lived in Greensboro for four and five years, respectively.
did you go to guilford?
No, but our upstairs neighbors did. I got a certificate of legal administration from Greensboro College and was down to Wake Forest or where I currently go for law school. That’s my entire connection to the world of NC higher education institutions.
And no offense to the Demon Deacons, but I am glad almost every day that I made the choice that I did.
sure are a lot of former north carolinians on the chilx threads.
hmmm, what’s the significance of you choosing the demons over the deacons jenny?
IT’S AN INVASION
yeah, not really a fan of winston-salem. i had brothers go to guilford and unc-g though.
did any of you go see lindstrom last week?
hmmm, what’s the significance of you choosing the demons over the deacons jenny?
You know, I had my acceptances in hand and was down to the wire, decision-making time, and was visiting my family in Delaware and there was a DP/Wake bball game on TV and I knew that my mind was pretty made up when I found myself really, really pulling for DP to win because I had this idea that the outcome of that game would be determinative in my choice. They won. Here I am.
Also I hate organized religion and love Satan.
who recommends spending one day of yr life in Springfield to see the Lincoln stuff?
the springfield chamber of commerce?
I do! You could even do two. But more than that is asking for it.
The Lincoln Museum is great. The Library is not as exciting. I also recommend visiting his tomb and while you’re at it, check out the Museum of Funeral Customs. Both capital buildings are neat, as is the Illinois State Museum.
Just MAKE SURE you are going on a couple of days when everything is open. Also, bring a car.
Here are pictures of when Jeff and I went to Springfield last year.
boobies!
Speaking of the south, I’m having collards, corn bread, and black coffee for lunch.
(bonus points for naming “hack the Gibson” reference — I bet... jaymc gets it)
I don’t know what that is.
I was at my department’s potluck brunch for the last hour. As usual, I dominated conversation because copy editors are not, by and large, a talkative bunch.
Also, bring a car.
well, can’t — I’ve never driven; so it’ll be one day, next summer I hope. Thanks.
We didn’t bring a car, either. It only really became a problem on the third night when we ran out of eating options. Most everything in walking distance from downtown closes at like, four, and all the recommended restaurants were out in the stripmall wasteland. Also, the tomb/funeral museum is a little far out but we took a cab there and walked back and it was just fine.
the snow is gorgeous today. I wish I could go skiing.
One for the spreadsheet: I hate skiing. I hate snowboarding more, if that’s even possible.
I’ve never done either.
I love skiing, but I love waterskiing even more.
I also hate waterskiing, or as I think of it, “Sport of 1000 Horrible Wedgies.” Anything that requires grace/balance is right out for me.
I am a good swimmer, though. I am okay walking, too. Mostly.
I know what you’re getting for your birthday.

I’ve never even had the opportunity to ski, water or otherwise. You guys must be rich. [/contentious statement meant to incite discussion to keep me entertained this afternoon]
I tried both kinds of skiing once as a kid, neither was a success.
The last time I went snowboarding was when I lived in northern CA and worked as a housekeeper at a ski resort—thus free lift ticket/rentals. I cannot remember the last time I went water skiing... high school, maybe? However, compared to most people, I am indeed rich.
my parents financed most of the skiing I’ve ever done, when I was in grade + high school. but it’s not impossibly expensive to go skiing outside of Buffalo, NY, let me tell you. it’s not like I’ve ever been to Aspen.
I’ve even been to Aspen! But not to ski. Probably to do something hippy-related like see a jam band or buy pot.
However, compared to most people, I am indeed rich.
hack the gibson is from Hackers
i kind of love that movie even though its horrible.
I think Kr likes Hackers.
Btw, I watched After Hours yesterday and thought it was fantastic.
I LOVE HACKERS. I WILL WATCH IT ALL THIS TIMES OVER AND OVER.
It still doesn’t get me any closer to understanding whether Nick says “coincidence” or “predicament,” though, because the movie is a predicament full of coincidences. Maybe he says one in verse one and the other in verse two. Maybe I will have to come to the next FFs show to find out.
yeah, Hackers is pretty hard not to love.
CONFESSION
I’ve never seen Hackers!
Lunch = meatloaf sandwich!
That’s why I thought John might get it, because it’s from a random stupid movie.
no wai you guys, Sneakers is the only way to go
OTM, Sneakerz rules.
Yeah, I’ve never seen Hackers either. Not to be snooty or whatever, but I haven’t really seen a whole lot of “random stupid movie[s].”
Sneakers is cool. I think Stephen Tobolowsky (whom Sarah’s mom once dated? is that right?) is in it.
I recently rewatched Sneakers and it was less mindblowingly clever than when I was 15 or whatever, but it is still very charming though dated.
Sarah’s Mom dated Needle-Nose Ned? Ned the Head?
That’s HUGE!
also I have totally seen a whole lot of random stupid movies.
Sarah’s mom was on the high school debate team with Stephen Tobolowsky, who was also in the episodes of Deadwood we watched yesterday. He’s everywhere!
I say “coincidence,” but maybe I should start saying predicament in the second verse. Those lyrics aren’t exactly an in-depth examination of the film, though.
Actually, they were debate partners, IIRC.
I haven’t really seen a whole lot of “random stupid movie[s]
Hmmmm... maybe I should take a look at your spreadsheet just to make sure.
Sarah’s Mom dated Needle-Nose Ned? Ned the Head?
Also Sammy Jankis.
Hmmmm... maybe I should take a look at your spreadsheet just to make sure.
I can send it to you. It’s at home.
Nick’s right, he’s a very well-employed character actor.

I want to see that:
Stephen Tobolowsky’s Birthday Party is a 2005 documentary about Stephen Tobolowsky in which he tells stories from his life. The actor, who is usually in a supporting role, takes center stage in the 87-minute Birthday Party and single handedly captivates and entertains the audience.
Whoah! What is that movie? xpost
I really don’t feel like working. Or doing anything.
It sounds Spalding Gray-esque.
I still want to see Children of Men. I am bad at going to the movies.
For the record, my mom was on the debate team with him, but not his partner. Her debate partner was Steve’s partner before she was my mom’s though.
xpost Oh man it’s playing at the Logan Theatre!
It’s an excellent movie.
I thought it was great.
Ugh. I am feeling less and less well. My tummy is messed up. Reheated Chicago-style pizza with pepperoni for breakfast? Could that be it?
Oh yeah, and I have been cross-country skiing. In Austria. It was pretty fun, though a lot of work and very tiring.
xpost And yet, if someone put mozzarella sticks in front of me right now, i’d eat them. No questions asked.
So I’m the only one who thought this was brilliant?
This weather does suck a bit, but I’d rather it were warmer and snowy than the cold we’ve had for the last couple weeks. And no matter how snowy and slushy it gets, it’s not that city in New York. 151 inches, I read? That’s too much snow.

Observations on food: 1) instant oatmeal is a little yucky, but it is oatmeal, and that’s better than no oatmeal. 2) if I thought I could get by with it, I would eat mozzarella sticks morning, noon, and night.

XPOST ... OR IS IT?
My parents have Super 8 home movies transferred to VHS of me XC skiing at like 2 years old. I started doing downhill in 7th grade or so. Tried a little tele but never got any good at it. Never tried snowboarding, I was afraid of the ass pain (from FALLING). I miss skiing a lot, I used to go every day after school until they turned the lights off on the hill.
HS: Did you ever go skiing at that little hill/park between E. Aurora and W. Seneca, NY? Can’t remember the name but my aunt’s house was right near the bottom of it.

I kind of made the free-association with “mozzarella sticks” and Buffalo sauce (both being staples of chain-restaurant appetizer menus) but I didn’t get Buffalo mozzarella until just now, no.
So I’m the only one who thought this was brilliant?
I don’t get it.
Oh, I see. I was unaware of something called Buffalo mozzarella.
Dan, no! I don’t think I’ve ever even heard of it, though that seems impossible. I’m going to try to find out wat it’s called.
uh, what it’s called.
unless you’re talking about K1ss1ng Br1dge? in which case, yes, I’ve skiied (sp?) there.
Never tried snowboarding, I was afraid of the ass pain (from FALLING).
I would have assumed you meant from falling.
I may have screwed up the geography. Maybe it’s toward South Wales? It’s very small, and possibly associated with a larger local park.
I have been to Kissing Bridge, but I was pretty young then and don’t remember a whole lot.
xpost: Just thwarting the peanut gallery a little.
Mozzarella sticks ... with CLUB SAUCE
SPICY!
what exactly is club sauce, anyway? Is it a thing, or is it like house salad dressing?

Whatever you’re looking for you can get it on eBay.

It’s a slightly sweet tomato-based sauce.
I think it’s just like ‘House’ dressing—that particular restaurant’s special recipe.
or that
I always thought it was the stuff that comes with shrimp cocktail, but all these answers are probably valid.
I think it’s just like ‘House’ dressing—that particular restaurant’s special recipe.
That’s what I assumed, too, since it was served at the country club in Arrested Development.

Like marinara? I guess I don’t get to clubs enough. At least, not the kind with sauce.
Club Foot is more my speed.
Nick must be rich.
Thought I got dusty
Thought I’d get rusty
Thought I’d get rich and quit oh he must be
Fat and ugly, broke, black and blue
But I’m trim, fit, rich and I’m back for round two

HI I WANT SHRIMP COCKTAIL LIKE A MOTHERFUCKER RIGHT NOW!
i’m kinda jonesin’ for a liverwurst sandwich.
I HAVE NEVER HAD LIVERWURST, BUT THAT’S SOUNDING PRETTY GOOD TO ME, TOO!
I just want a nap.
At the grocery store the other day I found myself weighing purchasing a chunk of braunschweiger, but decided I wasn’t ready for that step in my sandwich life, yet.
mmmm, sandwich life.

goddammit gear!
someone bring me a sandwich.
