You know what is great? Grapefruit. Grapefruit is great.

Yes, it is! Jennifur, do you have grapefruit spoons? They are handy.

My memory was jogged by “grapefruit”, for some reason, to remind me that I wanted to post about JUICE FASTERS in this thread. I’m certain we’ve talked about it before, maybe even on the sandbox? WTF, juice fasters? I have a friend who is evangelizing via fb for this and it’s hard to read sometimes.

we live in an eating disordered society

that is all i have to say about it really

It’s beyond eating, it’s straight up science ignorance.

Jeff, I want you to share a database of debunking sources. You’re my anti-woo guru.

tubgirl dot com

Hahahaha

A fitting response to claims of the Cult of Natural, I suppose.

omg irl at work LOLs

I do not have a grapefruit spoon. I just use a knife to free the sections and then eat them with a regular spoon. Not even a grapefruit knife, either. A steak knife! ~~rebel~~

ps juice fasts are super dumb.

I’m a big fan of grapefruit, too.

Only my bookmarks for this thread and the wish anus are working now. The others stopped working.

EZ hasn’t registered here yet, but he just posted this on the FB ILX secret group http://www.wbez.org/blog/city-room-blog/2011-11-30/walmart-makes-inroads-chicagos-north-side-lakeview-store-opening-9444.

I’m not going to shop there, but they did a nice job reusing of that space.

“There are three transgender employees working here,”

When asked why the opening release said “Walmart Express Opens in Wrigleyville” and not Boystown or even Lakeview, Restivo stressed it was not any slight to the gay community, but that the broader public would be more easily able to associate the location because of Wrigley Field.

“This store is creating 45–50 new jobs” — but how many will be lost at other stores around the neighborhood?

All of them.

That area was already lousy with food stores without this addition. The good people of Lakeview are assured their nutrition.

I think it’s a stretch to call that Wrigleyville. It’s generally considered Wrigleyville ends at Fremont.

It’s closer to a phallic pole than it is a foul pole.

Jeff.

I’ve got a foul pole.

For you.

Right here.

#justsaying

I think I just dabbed Srirachia in his other eye.

:D

Wait, what? I started this thread?? Weird!

My dearest CrunkleJ!

Whoa those Hanson brothers are real lookers.

Also, it’s an IPA! http://popwatch.ew.com/2011/11/30/hanson-launching-what-might-be-least-socially-acceptable-beer-in-history/

Also LOL at the Hanson/beer intersection of Jeff’s interests. Who would have guessed? What’s next? Patrick Stewart puts out a running shoe?

They are lookers, but that dipweed on the left has nasty hair!

It’s amusing to see beer nerds on twitter get so outraged by this.

are you serious?

people are outraged by mmbop beer?

lol blue line (I think)

i was thinking about if i end up going to this show by myself: lots of people use cell phones to kill time at shows between bands, and i’ve taken paperbacks to shows before when i’ve gone by myself, but i think taking a kindle to a rock show would be unbearably dorky.

Haha, yeh, for some reason a Kindle would seem really dorky in a way a phone or book wouldn’t. But then, maybe not dorky, but just weird b/c iPad would look out of place too. So might a magazine, maybe.

Dan, where did you find that image? I wonder if that’s from Halloween.

I would take any and all of those things to a show. I’d take this to a show if it was easier to carry around. http://www.thinkgeek.com/electronics/retro-gaming/e762/

i don’t have much of a hard time going to shows alone. i even sat (stood) through two opening bands to see cave and it never really even reached a noticeable level of discomfort. if i can’t sit somewhere, it helps to find a place where i can put my back against a wall though. but that would be true with or without a companion.

usually bring phone and emergency book.

I downloaded that Cave album, btw. Good stuff, esp. the opening track, which is super-derivative but also right in my wheelhouse.

xps someone posted it on facebook, and yeah I was figuring halloween

oh i don’t mind going to shows alone, but i’d rather give my ticket to someone if they’re going to use it than just waste it. also i don’t want to be bored in between bands.

just give it to someone outside if no one you know is a taker

i kind of want to take the opportunity of the sandbox to just be a total dick to everyone and then when real ilx comes back, claim that someone else registered my name and that i didn’t even know about the sandbox.

You realize you just ruined your own plan…

because i knew i wouldn’t actually do it lol

Here are some door hangers you can print out for use over the next 6 months:

http://www.cityofchicago.org/content/dam/city/depts/cdot/pedestrian/sidewalksnowremoval/Hanger_11_1_2011.pdf

I think it was easier to go to shows alone back when I smoked. I could just stand in the corner chain-smoking and looking surly.

xp oh shit I am printing 10,000 of those

that door hanger is an ink-suck.

I recommend you all read that URL and make an informed decision as to whether you want to click that link.

While I was in the elevator just now I thought about your saying this, and that reminded me of this clip. If somehow you haven’t already seen it, definitely watch it.

Watching the other anchor’s reaction in slo-mo is awesome.

Anyway, back to the elevator to think about you fucking chickens. Ta!

Lakeshore buses are the best. Such great views.

i was thinking about how even though i’ve been in this city for almost eight years, i still always look up from my book when the el goes over the river—it’s such an amazing sight each time for me

^^^

I still do this too.

I love that view.

I haven’t looked out a window in years.

That’s probably not true.

When I used to live off the Red Line, I would sometimes take a Brown Line from the Loop to Fullerton/Belmont and then switch, just so I could enjoy watching the skyline recede from view.

Now that I take the Brown Line every day, I don’t pay attention as much. But it still beats the subway.

Thats why I try to take the purple line home at night rather than the red, even though it means walking further out of my way to get there.

Who are you?

jon/via/chi

happy friday, chicago! love, minneapolis

xp (I’d assumed as much when I did a search on the login a few minutes ago and saw that he’d posted about metal, Smashing Pumpkins, and Community, but the Purple Line ref confirmed it.)

Good day, Minneapolis!

kelsey my sis in law just is about to have a baby (first) and i have to get her a xmas AND bday gift

tell me what to get her (please)

are you looking for baby specific gifts or gifts for her as a new mom or ...?

gifts for her as a new mom or just gifts for her

i have NO IDEA what to give this person

I was going to say, if baby-specific I can speak from experience that gift cards for places that sell baby stuff and diapers while not always the most thrilling of gifts, are HUGELY appreciated by busy new parents.

And jaymc with the quality detective work.

Is she planning to breastfeed? Because what I loved was having just a big pile o’ magazines. Reading a book was too much at first and the magazines were a lifesaver when Rowan would nurse for a LONG time. So I’d just grab a magazine & feel indulgent. So you could get her that.

I think anything cozy is nice because in the winter you’re just hunkered down being all nesty with the baby. So maybe a nice wrap cardigan or some slippers?

My best friend bought me some yoga pants & a hood-less hoodie after I gave birth because she (rightly) assumed I was tired of all my clothes. They were great casual clothes, but I could also venture out in them if need be. She got those at Old Navy.

Is she girly? Other nice things would be a gift certificate to get a pedicure and/or manicure, maybe a little satchel with some hair ties, a lip gloss, a nail polish, etc. so she can feel put together. I honestly started wearing make up WAY more after I had Rowan. My academic brain thinks this is because while my body was (and is) changing so much (and has changed so much) it was this thing that could still be under my control. Plus, it has helped me feel more put together when everything else feels very chaotic.

I like your login, jon. Also hello!

me too.

You could also get her a bottle of wine and some advil. Those were two things I couldn’t have while pregnant that I was excited to have back in my life.

Also nice—gift cards to restaurants that deliver.
