I have 3 friends who share a house in Hamtramck. Knowing them I’m reasonably certain they’ve had at least one each today.
It was “Oscar dork” I obj’d to more, actually. Eric co-writes two giant columns abt the nominations and awards every year, I’m not in his league.
Few people are. But still, you care enough to post about them on the Oscars thread, and you remember awards history beyond a year or two ago, so I think that qualifies you.
kev, I wd only be sleeping there
Does it taste like a little jelly donut?
Or a big one, yes. The ones that were brought into my office are sort of in between tennis and baseball size.
morbs, upon further reflection, 80% of chicago makes me want to kill myself in summer. dan, last year i had a raspberry paczki that almost put me in a diabetic coma and also weighed roughly 87 pounds in my stomach. it was so fucking good.
Oh I know all about the diabetic thing. The first one I had today just about made me shoot through the roof. The second was kind of a more mellow effect. (Maaaaaaaaan)
My newly found obsession with jelly donuts has led me to this:

(Jelly Donut Freestyle Battle... I’m crying laughing)
Apparently, Lady S0V is not a fan.
DUDES!!! I am grouchy again.
My managing editor got me a $10 iTunes certificate for my birthday, how nice!
Tell me some trackz that I should purchase with it, chilx. I’m thinking stuff I’d probably never ever get on my own...
new york groove by ace frehley, obv.
IT’S A WASTE OF $.99 DAN!!!!
you have to have a pre-existing relationship with the song for it to be right.
Sarah don’t be grumpy about that thing.
Now you have to tell us what it is.
i just took Carl for a walk from our house, down Clark, over Devon and up Sheridan back to our house. It’s a beauuuuuuuuutiful day.
I wish I had a paczki.
here’s something to make you feel better:

PLZ NO MORE PACZKI, TUMMY HURTS
LAUREL—it takes FOR. Ev. R. for BPAL to get their lovely smells to you. But they will come.
Amanda said something up there somewhere that made me snortOL and *heart* her more than ever but now I can’t remember what it was or why I liked it so much. Whaddya know about that?
I do know that I sure liked Bubble and All the Real Girls.
I liked All the Real Girls a lot. I forgot about Bubble — maybe I should rent it.
And I fucking want one of whatever you people keep posting photos of, goddam it.
I am in solidarity with the people who have a guilty love for the Oscars that is more about looking at what people wear than caring about the movies.
yeah, I forgot to tell you (Laurel) that it takes 14–21 days for the smells to arrive. when they do, though, you’ll be happy!
Thanks, I probably could have figured that out from the fine print somewhere, but I was waiting for two things to arrive today and feeling not in control of all the shipping confirms and bank charge dates and etc.
Hey, I said way upthread, when Jesse asked me why I was excited about the Oscars, that gaping at what people are wearing was one of my reasons.
Then you are one of the people with whom I stand in solidarity re: Oscars. Although, I don’t usually watch that part on TV. I just wait excitedly for gofugyourself.com to update the next day.
I am bummed that no one has stepped up to join the trivia team. I guess I could ask the guy I know who was a three-day Jeopardy! champ, but I’d rather not.
WAIT. There is a good possibility that the thing I was supposed to do Thursday night is now canceled in which case I could probably do the trivia. I won’t know until tomorrow, though.
Also, there was a blind guy on the bus and he got off and the bus driver said, “You can cross now!” and he crossed the street but ran into two stopped cars and then almost fell down a storm drain because he was kind of off kilter from the cross walk since the bus stopped in the middle of it so he was pretty unsure of where he was going. For some reason this made me think of Jesse. I’m sure that it was a little freaking to the people in the second car because he just barreled right into their driver’s side door. He eventually got on the sidewalk and got oriented, though.
Informal poll time!
True or false: silverware drawer dividers are silly.

Note: This is probably one of those things that I have a strong opinion on for about as long as it takes for somebody that I like to say, “I have one of those and I think it’s great!” at which point I will totally take back everything I just said.
I’m torn, because I wish I could use the one I bought, but it doesn’t fit into the kitchen drawer. I should probably just line the drawer and dump everything in there.
Pros: lets you see how many forks you have left, good for the blind
Cons: don’t fit into my kitchen drawer
srsly, i have three kitchen drawers, and they’re all six inches wide. Who designed these cabinets?
I have the same problem as Kenan, and now it rests on the back porch windowsill of the kitchen.
it = silverware tray, not my problem
Wow, I just looked in our kitchen and without the addition of our own auxiliary storage, we have one drawer that is about six inches wide.
mine’s on the bottom shelf of the dishware cabinet. Which is wrong.
I have the same problem as Kenan
I thought I was alone! We should form some sort of group.
Sometimes it helps to talk about your kitchen drawers with others who have the same problem.
I love silverware dividers! If you don’t have one, do you store your utensils standing up in a glass or something? It helps you get a soup spoon vs teaspoon when you want one, and the leftover rectangular compartment is good for bottle openers, sugar spoons, cheese knives, etc. So when you need something there is no digging.
Also when it gets full of crud you can run it through the dishwasher, or float it in a sink of hot water and a cap-full of bleach, unlike the entire drawer.
laurel otm. but i am crippled. I HAVE NO DRAWERS. AND MY PARENTS DIDN’T LOVE ME ENOUGH.
I’ll do trivia if no one else wants to.
Now I’m thinking of all the crap in the kitchen that won’t fit anywhere easily. There’s a lot. Stupid apartments with no countertop space...
I have counter-top but roommate likes to keep it clear and we have precious little cupboard space (partly the fault of dishwasher but also bad design). So my pie pans and all my pot lids are stored in the dishwasher and it has to be emptied to wash anything. Garrr.
I thought trivia was tonight? If it is, I may now be free for it. We’re not having practice tonight anymore but Sarah and I had talked about other plans. I will decide soon.
Jenny, could you post the trivia details again? I think they were originally on Real ILX.
yesterday i got home to find not one, not two, not even three but all four records i ordered waiting for me. that was pretty awesome. then the ups guy came by and dropped off an unexpected package for me and that really blew wind up my proverbial skirt. books and music, music and books, it’s all i really need to get by.
I lurve drawer dividers. We have 2 at home PLUS a countertop silverware divider. We keep our regular spoons, forks, knives on the counter and everything else (multiple spatulas, sharp knives, measuring spoons, serving spoons, can openers, etc etc) in the two dividers in our large pull-out drawer.
I’m expecting one of those ebay dresses to come via usps today.
Oh man, am I tired. The show last night was pretty hot though.
I was hoping to meet girlz but all I got was annoying middle-aged woman showing her tits. :(
From yesterday:
1) Art is a competition.
2) Jesse, D. Shavers was shot by a 17 yr old kid aiming for his 15 yr old stepson, over a beef about having moved into the wrong neighborhood or something.
3) Brick is awesome.
Storing pie pans in the dishwasher sounds like a recipe for never, ever doing dishes. Gah.
I just throw all the silverware in the draw, willy nilly. None of our silverware matches (well, not much of it anyway) so it’s easy to find what you want by looking for the correct handle. We have another drawer with various utensils in it. For some reason, I am unconcerned about the cleanliness of the silverware drawer, which is uncharacteristic.
Here are the pub quiz details. It turns out that I cannot go after all; I have to speak on a panel at Planned Parenthood tomorrow night and have to, you know, figure out WTF I’m supposed to say tonight. I thought that was going to get canceled but it’s still on.
Place: Galway Arms, 2442 N. Clark (Clark and Arlington)
Date: Wednesday, February 21
Time: 8 pm
Cost: $5 minimum donation (please give more if you can!)
Prizes: Sponsored by The Johnsson Group. $200 grand prize and $20 drink/food discount for round-winning teams.
The Galway Arms pub quiz is a trivia game with teams of about 3—6 people. An MC asks 4 rounds of questions and the teams write down their answers on a given form, which is later scored. There is a prize for the winning team of each round as well as a grand prize for the team with the highest score after 4 rounds.
Hmmmm ... interesting.
Innnnnnnnnnnnnnteresting.
Verrrrrrrrrry verrrrrrrrrrry ... innnnnnnnnnnnnnnnteresting.
Six people? Goddamn.
Yeah, but our combined brainpower is equivalent to six people.
OK I am definitely down for trivia, if we can get a full team together. I will plan on being there a little before 8.
Three counts as a full team. I’ll be there, too.
This photo will be the highlight of my day.

It’s all downhill from here. I should stop trying.
I will be there to stand right in front of your team’s table and tell WOO HOO!!!! YEEAAHHH!!! WOOOOOOOO!!!! and take lots of photos with flash.
I’m still down as well.
i’ll heckle the other teams if you think that will help.
I wonder if there are going to be straight-up math questions. I kinda suck at math.
Math doesn’t equal trivia. But I’m ok at math, as long as its not college-level math or higher.
Why was everyone so down on the new Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! album? It sounds pretty good to me. Though I never heard their first album.
Is that a shrimp po’boy? I’ve never had one because I find the idea of putting breaded food on BREAD a little keerazy, but I’m actually...tempted...
I had some shrimp po’ boy yesterday. :>
xpost, crazy like a fox
there is nothing bad about fried shrimp. at least that’s the story i’m sticking to.
jordan, is there anywhere in chicago to get one of those crazy koo-koo sandwiches?
I meant trig math, square roots, and stuff like that. Things that people who are good at math can recall from memory of figure out quickly in their head. That was always what I was worst at, even more so than movies.
Not really. We were actually talking about this last night, since there are like four decent New Orleans places in Madison and not very many in Chicago in Minneapolis. There’s Heaven on Seven, but I thought it was overpriced and not a very good po boy.
I suppose though, with the format of the game, that wouldn’t really make a big difference.
I don’t mind the new CYHSY and I also thought their first record was overhyped. The dude still sounds like drunk Gordon Gano.
Okay Kenan, here is what you do. You go to Lawrence’s seafood and you get a 1/2 pound of the best damn shrimp I’ve ever eaten. You take it home, where you have a soft french loaf, shredded lettuce, mayo, tomato slices, pickles, and hot sauce waiting. Then you have the best po boy ever eaten.
I was not impressed with CYHSY when I saw John’s band open for them.
I saw them here at about that same time. It was a decent rock show, kinda crowded for my tastes but they were big hyped up at the time. I can’t say it ruled, I’ve definitely been to shows that left much, much bigger impressions on me. But it wasn’t bad. The fact that it was free kind of helped, probably.
Yeah, I’m hoping that bar trivia will not be as scholastic in nature as high-school quiz bowl but will still be academic enough to resemble Jeopardy! or Trivial Pursuit more than the VH1 World Series of Pop Culture.
Goddamn I want a shrimp po’boy.

Thx, duder.
I like eating shrimp po’ boys with vegetarians like lesbians like straight girls.
(I could’ve put another “eating” in there but I didn’t)
That reminds me: should I agree to be set up with someone who doesn’t eat meat or drink (DRINK!) and see if I can fix either/both of those conditions? I think the setter-upper is secretly hoping I will.
And lo, she was known as Laurel the Corruptor
They say you can’t change him, but when they say that they’re talking about trying to change him *for the better*. Maybe it can work the other way round.
DO IT, DO IT
The non-drinkingness sounds like a huge challenge and possibly not worth it, but what do I know.
I eat fishies now. I had shrimp and mussels on Valentine’s Day and salmon on Sunday.
20 bucks if Laurel can flip the vegetarian.
xpost—Getting him to drink, though—sometimes people don’t drink because they know what assholes they are when they do.
Excellent.
xpost
if you can get him drunk you can get him to eat a greasy cheeseburger.
now i want a cheeseburger.
Mussels + V-Day = :) :)
Kev that new name rules.
Veg is sadness because it means my cooking will go un-et by Liked One, but drinking? What do people even DO with themselves?
One of my very good friends (Kid, from the band) does not drink, but he makes up for it with his eating.
Does he at least meditate or build houses?

NOOOOOOOOO! orig version by Hello!
What do people even DO with themselves?
Constant sex.
Wait, are you saying they have sex...sober?
Do you only cook meat, Laurel?
Wait, are you saying they have sex...sober?
haha Yes! And with enthusiasm!
morbs, the production on the ace frehley version is HYSTERICAL! they bury his vocals in the harmony because of his atrocious accent, then the mid-range is pumped up in the word “groove” causing a “back in a new york grOOOHve” sound. it’s amazing.
wait, are you saying people have sex?
John, pretty much everything has meat or meat base in it somewhere. Lentils for brek this morning? Totally awesome made with bacon and home-made chicken stock.
