xpost One not familiar with the anals of law may end up in the penal system.
tee hee!
titter.
John, I would be psyched for trivia but I think we are having band practice on Weds., which will be necessary since we’re playing on Friday and haven’t had a “real” practice in a while.
Actually, I was wrong. I just walked past it. It’s Golden Pacific. Golden Palace is... a casino?
I just drove past it and realized the same thing!
jaymc said in the cigarette thread: When I started it was (don’t laught) Benson & Hedges Ultra-Light Menthol 100s
And I may have already told you this, but I smoked those for about a year in high school because that is what my boyfriend smoked. Prior to dating him, I smoked the much more butch Salem Lights.
I had some friends who smoked Capris 100s (or 110s?) for a while because it was ironic, or something. I had a few, they were like air.
When I started it was (don’t laught) Benson & Hedges Ultra-Light Menthol 100s
THAT WAS MY FIRST CIGARETTE, TOO. Srsly, I still get a nostalgic scent off of those. And erotic, even, because my first girlfriend smoked them.
Has anyone else tried the little asian grocery that’s on broadway right by my place? Golden Palace, I think? It’s really cool. They have good fruit.
I LUV that store. Cheap Srirachia sauce, fun stuff like Beef Blood, Pig Blood, and Beef Bile*, frozen pre-cooked sushi rice, and a lot of cheap everything Asian.
I used to go to that place and buy absurd amounts of Pocky and jelly candy. I miss it!
ok, jesse, if you can go to that store, you can come to my apartment. You have no more excuses.
Today was pretty great. Lunch at Giordanos, worked for 2 hours, then dinner at Cafe Ba-Ba-Reeba. Tapas are God’s Own method of dining.
Highlights:
-Filet, med-rare, topped with blue cheese
-Mushrooms stuffed with spinach and manchego cheese
-Roasted bacon-wrapped dates with an apple cider vinaigrette OMG, GOOD! I’m going to make these at home.
Also, tapas-sized desserts are the perfect size.
Cocktail of note: Rebujito- Dry sherry with sprite and fresh lemon. Unusual.
At the adjoining table there was a young restaurant manager bitching about the following
-He can’t let his employees sell Girl Scout Cookies because if he allows 1 outside agency in, it opens the door for solicitation by unions.
-He has to do super-thorough background checks because the unions are always trying to come in and “infect his employees.”
-Work at Will laws are not nearly strong enough, and leave an employer virtually powerless to fire an employee after 90 days except for in cases of exceptionally bad work, and then only after tons of warnings. One time he accidentally hired a union mole, and fortunately caught him within the first 90 days and was able to fire him.
(That first bullet point was his restaurant group’s official policy, which he was quoting.)
That’s true, actually. It’s okay to have an occasionaly charity collection drive, but other than that, you can’t allow some types of solicitation at the workplace without giving union organizers equal access. I forget the case. Don’t tell my labor law prof.
That work at will stuff is just nonsense and makes me want to smack him around a little.
OMG, they really knew how to mess us up at this restaurant gig last night. First, the unlimited long island ice teas that got me more drunk that I had been all weekend in Chicago. Then the free dinner afterwards was just not to be believed. It was like two Thanksgivings. They kept bringing out giant plates of chicken, fried chicken, chicken wings, smothered pork chops, ham, rice, stuffing, cake, mac & cheese, chicken, etc.. I’m giving up food for lent and I don’t think I’m going to miss it.
That dinner is like Thanksgiving if they have Thanksgiving in heaven!
Haha. What’s the opposite of food poisoning? I think I’m going to go home on account of that (and I have another parochial school gig this afternoon).
Happy Mardi Gras!
I am a grumpy monster this morning. GRUMPY! MONSTER!
I think this started yesterday, when my mom emailed me this sad story. She thought she’d finally made a friend in her new city (she’s been there a year). She’s been going to see movies with this woman. Anyway, she had such a great time this weekend with her and they talked for a really long time after the movie. Then my mom is like, Hey! We should just have a movie night once a week! What do you say? And the lady was positive about it. Then the next morning, my mom got an email from her basically saying, yeah, the thing is I’m really busy and don’t have time to spend with you...
I hate that lady. How can anyone not want to spend time with my mom? :-(
Anyway, it sort of started a little kindling for sadness in me, which this morning has fired up into a decent sized ball of rage. Despite all my rage, I’m still just a rat... and so on.
xpost—oh yeah! Something to be glad about!
Hey, can anybody recommend a decent temp agency in Chicago? Or agencies? I need some income.
Sorry, no.
But Matt, if you’re still on here, you can email me and I can send you some pointers on where/how to get shows (if you’re not scared of me after my huge post just now).
Speaking of Mardi Gras, I heard M@m@ D|gd0wn on Public Radio this morning.
No, srsly?
Deric, my husband worked with a temp agency to some success but I can’t remember what it is. I’ll ask him, though.
Here is your feminist RAGE for the day. Do not read if you are already feeling overwhelmed with negative emotions about our big dumb world.
And mad hugglez to Sarah and her mom. I would go to the movies with your mom!
Yeah there was a blurb about the performance at the Children’s Museum. Mostly talked about the kids’ activities, but the band was namedropped and they played a recording of music and parade with laughing kids and such.
Supposedly there are photographs on CPR’s site but I can’t find them right now.
That’s exciting about MDD on NPR!
Feminist rage, part deux: http://feministing.com/archives/006542.html
That IS exciting. Thanks for letting me know Dan, otherwise we would have had no idea.
I don’t see on anything on their website yet either but there is a photo of five dudes with sousaphones and blue tracksuits, so close enough.
Please tell me that MDD wears matching track suits, even if it’s not true, because that’s awesome. Even better, tell me that you wear marching band uniforms.
Here is your feminist RAGE for the day.
I’m not sure that stops with, or even begins with, feminism. There are so many things wrong with that.
I hear that in Asian cities the wealthier women sometimes get surgery to make their eyes more round.
Tell me lies. Tell me sweet, little lies.
xp—no, there is lots of racism, classism, and capitalist manipulation in there, too. And that is true about eye surgery. And women in the US get their vadges tightened and lifted.
Actually we do have matching track jackets. And matching dickie pants/shirts, hoodies, letter jackets, etc.
xpost lifted where?
or did you mean lifted like shoplifted?
I take a holistic view of oppression in that I think you can’t fully separate sexism, racism, and classism because that they are of similar origin—those in power trying to preserve the heirarchy that gives them their power and privilege. Similarly, even oppressed groups can find a stake in preserving the hierarchy to hang on to whatever power/privilege they are allotted. I think that the methods of oppression differ depending on the target group, and that those on the receiving end experience the impact of racism/classism/sexism in different ways and to different degrees, but I think its all of a piece. This is just a great example of that: the “whitening cream” is definitely a feminist issue (because it’s targeted to women generally, who are told that their entire value is in their looks, and to dark-skinned women, who are told that they are even less valuable than light-skinned women) as well as a race and class issue.
Lifted like they have their labia tightened up so they don’t dangle so much. Dangly labia. It’s the scourge of rich women everywhere.
WITH LASERS
THE FUTURE IS NOW
i’m sure there’s a “five finger discount” joke in there somewhere.
“Doc, I need to have my labia lifted because I’m always getting them caught in my designer hand bag.”
My next band will be called The Dangly Labia.
My comment would have been funnier if I could have come up with the name of an actual designer with the current hot commodity hand bag but alas I cannot. Which is for the best, because I can’t afford to have my labia lifted right now.
TEMP AGENCY: New Office Temps.
This is just a great example of that: the “whitening cream” is definitely a feminist issue (because it’s targeted to women generally, who are told that their entire value is in their looks, and to dark-skinned women, who are told that they are even less valuable than light-skinned women) as well as a race and class issue.
no, you’re right.
I almost take this as a good sign, though. India is in the middle of some heavy social transition if the powers that be are being this heavy-handed about keeping the ladies down. And using capitalist means to do it! What a world.
(re: temp agencies—folks have mentioned New 0ffice, or signing up w/ Northwestern’s own temp pool.)
O the dangly, gangly, mangly...
My next band will be called The Dangly Labia.
Bad call, bro.
I have thoroughly enjoyed talking about my labia on the internet.
And we loved hearing about it.
LADIES OF CHILX: TELL US ABOUT YOUR LABIA.
The Labia Monologues.
Which is for the best, because I can’t afford to have my labia lifted right now.
two sided duct tape or maybe velcro could help?
My next band will be called The Dangly Labia.
there was one awesome band name from this weekend but i forget what the hell it was now. all i can remember was thinking of starting a rev. horton heat-esque psychobilly/gospel revival band called the crystal methodists.
OMG awesome.
In a newspaper in DC I saw an ad for a plastic surgeon who did various procedures, one of which was “Westernization surgery”
“Westernization surgery”
I wonder if it’s some kind of package deal. Eyes rounded, tits enlarged, labia tucked, and asshole bleached.
It’s very important, you know, to have a perfectly pink, shaven asshole. I won’t even go NEAR a woman who doesn’t have that.
oh no I’m in THAT mood again. I’m sorry chilx. I’m going away now.
My Lady Has A Beautiful Anus
How do I love my lady’s anus? Let me count the ways.
Have you seen her? Have you seen my beautiful lady and her anus? Unless you are an ex-boyfriend, her proctologist, or an art student in that class she modeled for, you probably have not have glimpsed the fairest orifice on God’s green Earth. For this, you have my deepest sympathies.
I would put my lady’s anus up against any of the legendary anuses of the past: Helen of Troy, Joan of Arc, Marie Curie, Eleanor Roosevelt.
Maybe the best Onion article ever.
Anus kills thread?
Sometimes, it’s as if I’m gazing through a taut, puckered window into her very soul
Anus kills thread?
What labia could not do, anus can.
So true. So, so true.
!
let’s... uh... talk about something else.
I went into a cleaning frenzy yesterday. Aired out the apartment and went to town on it. There’s not a lot of clutter, since I don’t own anything, but cat hair. Oh, cat hair. How you torture me.
Kenan, Do you want some clutter? I can give you some, real cheap.
Anyone want bigger/larger breasts? Read Here!
I guess I meant to say bigger/smaller, but I was thinking bigger is better, so...
Cat hair is ridiculous. There’s a dude named Dizzy crashing on my couch right now, and if I had known that would happen I would have cleaned off the carpet of cat hair that covers it.
xpost you scared me. apparently that only happens in prepubescents. because i love lavender, and do not want to give it up.
You know, it’s not too late. He’d probably still appreciate it. And maybe be less Dizzy.
Did you throw a blanket or something on top of it to create a protective shield between him and the hair?
Kenan, the study was on prepubescents, but you never know...
I have nothing to say about any of today’s conversation.
Tell us about your labia, John.
We really need to not have this be the last post on the page. :-D
I’m feeling a little better right now. I made the kickassomist potato veggie enchiladas last night (& rice & beans) and I get to have leftovers in t minus 45 mintues.
Oh yeah, he had a blanket and stuff. I’m sure he’s up by now, and poking around my messy apartment.
Sucks for him that you aren’t there to make him sour cream panwaffles.
there’s a yogurt spread we were eating on toast called labna. i always read it wrong.
it was good though, like a cross between yogurt and cream cheese.
Recipe: Bacon-Wrapped Dates
A sticky, salty, sweet, chewy delight. Couldn’t be simpler, and they go like hotcakes. Just wrap half a strip of bacon around a seeded date, secure with a toothpick and bake at 350 degrees until the bacon is crisp. Make more than you think you’ll need, people love them and the house smells great. They can be made well ahead of time and frozen in freezer bags. Bake frozen or not. Serve hot from the oven. Great to keep on hand, frozen, for unexpected company.
xpost that’s what she said
i tried wrapping a date in bacon once. i was thinking “two great things, even better together!” but it turns out the whole is less than the sum of the parts.
lol
I’m out dudes, have a good afternoon and Mardi Gras evening.
it seems like it might be good. but not if the date is all disgustingly sweetened.
I tried wrapping a date in bacon once too, as I was out of condoms.
lol
did anyone get a paczki today? the old polish dude i used to work with retired last june and he’d always bring some in. i could go for one about now.
Another source of outrage: This article is bad enough, but the comments!!
“Vindication at last. Perhaps now society will look upon our women not as the fairer sex but with an equal eye and as much to blame as the men.”
did anyone get a paczki today
I did! The head copy editor brought in a couple of boxes.
bacon wrapped dates benefit from a drizzling of cider vinegar.
All I have is a Lean Cuisine of questionable safety as it’s been thawed and re-frozen at least once.
it was of questionable safety to begin with.
Is this the lunch doldrums?
I’m getting excited about the Oscars.
Why?
Is “The Descent” up for anything? Sauciest British bitches?
WTF is “The Descent”?
Thank you.
I guess my point was, I’ve never heard of it, there was no Oscar buzz attached to it, and IMDB (which apparently has been redesigned?) says it came out in 2005.
and why would you know about a movie with no Oscar buzz attached to it, right?
Really? No Oscar buzz? I saw some SERIOUS Oscar blog buzz about the movie, mainly in the aforementioned “Sauciest British Bitches” category. Of course, there’s always Judi Dench to contend with in that segment, so it’s going to be tough for them. So to the makers of “The Descent” I say good luck and cheerio!
Why?
Because I love the whole horse-race aspect of it, seeing what the pundits are predicting and if momentum is shifting in one direction or another, and because, like baseball, I love all the lore and the trivia and the history attached to it, and because I also sincerely love watching the show to see who wins and to see what everyone’s wearing and to yell at the screen and make fun of celebrities with a dozen friends at someone’s apartment with beer and snacks, and with some stake in it, too (since I’ll be betting on it — two years ago I won over $200). It’s one of my favorite days of the year.
and why would you know about a movie with no Oscar buzz attached to it, right?
No. More like, why would I NOT know about a movie WITH Oscar buzz?
