notifications—i like them, i see the use—is there a way to disable them? even for peace of mind for people that want to make sure they never see them. would be good upfront.
idea: old ilx mode—a settings checkbox to make things as close as possible to a world where what worked before should be the only option in the future
user stats need to be updated for current month (“top posters for july, 2026”, “board activity for july, 2026”, “posts per day for the last 30 days” doesn’t seem to include august data, or maybe it just needs to add today’s post data)
editing a post—does it / should it leave a trail of history, when it was edited, time stamp, etc? not sure how it works now, just think it’s worth discussing
others have suggested that the layout of the Recent Activity (which is acting as a kind of replacement for Site New Answers) is not good, and i agree. i don’t have much use for the newest questions, the column on the right. would much rather have a page which replicates the current function of Site New Answers, just a full page with the most recently updated threads.
I think a major discussion should be had about emojis/reactions to posts. ironically, i’ll say, if you like this idea you know “like my post” here, it’s actually functional. but there’s also a lot to be said against them existing at all. it’s not simple at all, it should be conversation, probably a different thread somewhere!
same thing (discussion should be had) about the editing window — the amount of time you have after a post to edit it. i love being able to edit it, btw, and i’m fine with 5 minutes. but i also am pretty sure there will be other people who don’t want any edits at all, would have opinions about timing, edit/log history, etc.

i think a good rule of thumb to follow for a major ilx update is that it shouldn’t aim to change how people use the board or engage in discussion. i think that’s why the reactions cross a line for a lot of posters, myself included.

Posts per day for the last 30 days is up-to-date daily, but the rest are the previous calendar month
Editing posts does leave a history, and you can see that history on a post that’s been edited

I think post reactions are fine. They’re baked into messageboard DNA at this point and it feels archaic not to have them

I don’t see an option for emoji reactions, “likes” or anything else. Is there discussion of adding this functionality somewhere? If so, mark me as a No vote.
If you click on a post, you’ll get a menu.
click on any post and a bunch of options appear, including post reactions, reply, FP, save...
...and having Chat Mode as default means I can see that Keith answered that before I finished my post, which may, just may, eliminate the need for “XP!”
I will say that the community here feels relatively fixed/static, meaning that post reactions being available a) doesn’t mean we have to use them, and b) doesn’t mean we can’t shape community norms around how they’re used when we do

On the home page, I’m not sure what the purpose of the column indicating when a board was created is—maybe the range is greater on ILX itself? The descriptions on the old site have more character, though I suppose they aren’t really more informative.
I like having the quote function and the ability to edit posts as well as the buttons for stylization (easier than typing the code).
I’m agnostic on the emoji question. It’s useful in Signal and places like that to have people “vote” on something as guidance for group action — which makes sense in a thread like this one, but isn’t useful in the same way in topical discussion threads (which is most of ILX).
