<3 !!!
i get really REALLY mad when i hear fireworks going on before/after the official fireworks day/s: it’s not fair to animals.
basil otm
Yeah i don’t know why the country club down the road did their 20-min fireworks show last night? I got her a thundershirt, which is awesome, but we couldn’t use it last night because I’d recent put her frontline on. Hence the snuggles. Interestingly she didn’t bark or growl at all.
we are pondering this little old lady (her name is Joy):

second attempt at convincing the landlord is underway :/
o jeez good luck! she is v. pretty
ooooh do it!!! sending good vibes to your crazy landlady.
Any news? Dying over here!!
not yet :/
i wrote a pleading email to the LL, since she keeps making a point to jordan that she knows him, but she doesn’t really know me. and the head of the rescue group wrote to her as well, explaining that they are particular about who their dogs go to, and that joy would be perfect for us (and also gave a heartwrenching description of the terrible state she was in when they found her).
now we just wait. i think there is about a 5% chance she’ll say yes, but we had to give it one last shot.
All appendages are crossed for you!
she left a voicemail last night, saying that she is feeling “very positive” about this, swayed in our favour, etc. etc. and she needs to research pet lease agreements. but this is the same stuff she said last time, before finally saying no, so i’m not holding my breath :/
Maybe the adoption people contacting her will help though!
yr landlady sounds like a piece of work
nah, she’s actually a very nice and extremely fair person, she’s just SUPER neurotic. like, signing our lease when we moved in took FOUR FUCKING HOURS because we had to go through the entire house and note the condition of every.single.thing. we also pay about $7–800 below market value for this place because she is so insistent on being fair. also she is planning to sell eventually and said that when she does, if we are still here, we’ll have 6 months notice or as much time as we need to find a new place before it even goes on the market.
she totally adores jordan, though, which is why he is the one that deals with her 99% of the time.
joy is gonna be at another adoption fair on saturday, so the LL might come meet her. if she meets her in person, we’ll have basically won bc no one could say no that adorable face.

<3
that’s a lot of face
she is gorgeous, i hope the landlady goes to the fair.
decision?
still waiting :/
last time she said she would decide in “a few days” and we waited like 6 weeks so
this lady, ughh!
she has definitely got an aggravating streak.
i kinda feel a bit sorry for her—she was in a serious car accident 20 yrs ago, and it left her pretty fucked up. she walks kinda funny and she can’t really open her mouth when she talks. apparently she has a whole bunch of plates in her body and can’t ever fly again (my guess is the pressure would create swelling?? or something). she IS a nice person, just.... weird.
oh and jordan just got home and told me that she called and is meeting us at the adoption fair tomorrow!!!
oh yay, that is very promising. and I admire how kind and fair you are about her even though she has been difficult.
Basil’s expensive dog trainer just left and I am feeling like I may be wasting my money? I feel like she has given us some good techniques but I might have been able to find those by researching on my own? She didn’t actually work with b but instead talked to me the whole time, and at the first sign of excitement she had me put her n her crate, which I think just made her anxiety level skyrocket.
I don’t wanna be one of those people who thinks they know better than the professional, but it feels weird for her to recommend x,y,z without working with her and seeing her behavior more.
ooh i read this thing about crate training—that you have to get the dog to WANT to be in the crate, so you put a treat in the crate and close it and let the dog try to get in there for a while, then finally let them in.
UPDATE:
so we got to the adoption fair and joy wasn’t there, they told us that she’d been pretty much already adopted by an older couple with a lot of malamute experience. my heart just sank bc i figured the LL would just freak out, since we’d talked up this one particular dog. but then they introduced us to vivienne, who is waaay different but so pretty and friendly. she’s a husky mix (brown eyes), more energy than elderly joy, but still v v well behaved and only 2 yrs old so we’d have her a lot longer.
LL showed up and we talked with the rescue group people for a while, who have been totally amazing and answered all her questions and were v supportive and encouraging. THEN we had to go have coffee with LL and talk even more, but it’s looking pretty good?? she wants us to get liability insurance with our renter’s insurance, which is fine, we’ll make whatever concessions are necessary. there’s some issues with the other tenants in our duplex, but she doesn’t really like them, so she’s not gonna let them sway her decision.
next up is a house inspection by the rescue people, then... hopefully it’ll be finalized??
Oooh I’m glad things are looking up!
Xpost I never crate her without some treat or toy... Sometimes she just goes there and hangs out on her own (she napped there this afternoon), but she does not like it if she’s crated and you’re across the room and ignoring her. I don’t know why this lady didn’t just work with her to calm down or help me practice managing her.
yeah does she think you can just shove her in a crate when you’re out walking her?? our rescue group hates caesar milan btw—idk much about him bc i’ve never actually watched his show, but i guess he focuses more on negative reinforcement?
No she’s given lots of advice/ideas about walks, it just strikes me as odd that the trainer would rather put her away than interact with her and understand what makes her tick...
Caesar is ughhhhh. His techniques, if used on a dog like basil, would make things worse! He does a lot of dominance stuff and punishing. Negative reinforcement isn’t always bad; it can include “good things go away when you misbehave” (ie, if you get overexcited and start acting out, a game stops). But his techniques seem more like he’s physically dominating the dogs :(
it’s all but a done deal, guys!!!
the only 0.9% chance of this falling through now is:
our neighbours—the other side of the duplex—are being dicks about us getting a dog. apparently the guy has “hyper sensitive” hearing, and there are neighbours behind us who have a yappy dog that they leave outside all day. so the guy had a shit fit at our LL and doesn’t want her to let us get a dog. BUT the LL just wants to check the legal stuff and make sure they can’t cause any trouble bc they signed a lease with the assumption that none us could get dogs.
Hmmm if the dog behind you makes noise (something completely out of the control of ll) then i don’t think there’s any prior expectation of no dog noises. I hope this works out!!!
Also his assumption that neither of you could get dogs...is his assumption, right? He hasn’t seen your lease... He doesn’t know for certain that your lease says no dogs...
I just really want you to get this dog!!!!
me too!!!! it’s so close!!!
so we found out some more info about neko (that’s what we’re calling her, it’s the only name we could agree on): she once peed in the car of her original owner (fyi she was just a PUPPY) and he beat her so badly that she sustained a broken back, broken ribs and a collapsed lung. the only good thing to come of it was that it happened in a public parking lot and some good citizens called the cops on him.
Ugh horrible, horrible person. You will give her such a nice home!
We finally got a home inspection scheduled by the rescue group, but now the LL says that she has been too tired to look into pet leases this week AND she has to give us 30 days notice for any lease amendments?? I mean, seriously?? So I don’t even know of neko will still be available :/
Also they don’t have enough foster homes available so she is being kenneled right new which is really bumming me out :(
OMG JUST GIVE ME MY DOG ALREADY
Ughhh this is ridiculous. 30 days? Why? I think that’s to protect tenants which obviously isn’t an issue here. Seriously i called my landlord and asked him and he said “you go get yourself a dog, miss tehresa!” Done. Do you want me to have him talk to her?

only good thing about today!
j show us a picture please
Tomorrow!.definitely taking my camera and getting a million glamor shots of her.
We are gonna pay her boarding costs between now and adoption, so they will hold her for us!

we spent about 2 hours with her today, she was such a good girl, really well behaved and we have yet to hear her bark, even when she saw squirrels she wanted to chase. she has the softest, loveliest fur, and she’s very trusting and affectionate for such an abused dog.
Awww j looks so happy!
it was the best! we’re going to spend another couple hours with her tomorrow too!
j&j she is so beautiful and she looks perfect for you both and so loved already. i’m so glad she has won the puppy lottery after that horrible beginning.
and basil is as beguiling and beautiful as ever.
<3
can’t help sharing this one from this afternoon!

I bought her a backpack because I think she should start carrying her own weight when we hike, but i have no idea if it fits properly. I guess i will find out tomorrow!
love her.
her new backpack reminds me of that tv show called ‘dogs with jobs’.
i like neko. i’d like a dog like that but it’s too hot here i think. dog backpack seems like it could make a dog feel very useful.
They like to have jobs. I think it makes them happier. Basil also likes to herd people when we’re hiking!
Neko looks so sweet! I can’t wait for her to come home!
harbl their coats are good at keeping them cool or warm—they have a weird double coat. they only thing they say is to not exercise them during the hotter hours, and to esp beware of hot pavement (if it’s too hot for your bare feet, it’s too hot for their paws). but they also need tons of human attention and can’t really be left alone much—we are lucky with our schedules/jobs, so she will only be alone probably 6–7 hrs 2–3 times a week at the most.

she looks really wolf-y in this pic, but irl she is super friendly-looking!
she is so great :)
she is beautiful, she looks a bit like f’s dad’s dog (rip) who was part tundra wolf/ part malamute and who was very beautiful and gentle and liked to sit squashed up in an armchair with a droll look in his eye.
ominous voicemail from LL
can’t get hold of her
99% sure she is going to renege on this whole thing
wtf are we gonna do, we’re already totally emotionally committed
Nooo! If she does you should just put in your 30 days notice and find a new place so you can have neko next month like planned (wishful thinking, i know).
omg
LL is legit nutso!~ she has been on ph with poor ytth for like an hour, STILL unclear if it’s yay or nay
she is mad that we are paying the boarding fees at the kennel—we have BETRAYED HER TRUST... but it has nothing to do with her! we haven’t taken ownnership/guardianship of neko, we just made a donation to n0rsled in order for them to take a good faith commitment. LL is claiming that she never actually said yes we are moving forward, which is a lie.
j looks like he’s about to have a breakdown, is pacing entire house
i might throw up
j is a hero—so calm and diplomatic. if i had to speak to her i would be losing my shit right now. she talks nonstop for about 15mins at a time, letting j get in about 10 words.
wtf, consciously or not (and who care which) she is fucking with you. how dare she hurt you both like this, how dare she try to deprive neko of a ready, great home while promoting herself as a dog lover.
i know!!! it turns out it was a major miscommunication, that i tbh i think is entirely her fault BUT i guess we should have known not to do anything till we had it on paper. j is still on ph with her FYI, but it seems he is making good progress...??
i also owe him a huge debt for all this—he is the one who ALWAYS deals with her, which means about an average of 5 hrs ph time p/month.
the problem is: if she says no we will absolutely have to move, bc we know that neko is our dog and we have made a commitment to her, even if it’s just in our minds.
i am also extra super pissed bc we had another amazing full day with neko, came home on a high, got ruined by LL
yesterday: had amazing day with neko, came home, invited “good” friends over for celebratory drinks, the woman-half of the friends gave me a bunch of condescending, unsolicited dog “advice”, even though they have a rat terrier mix, which is a TOTALLY DIFFERENT KIND OF DOG in all ways to a siberian husky. she was so unbelievably rude and awful about it, and really hurt my feelings (aw emo), that i don’t actually ever want to see her again. it made me realise she is always this way, and has been quite rude to me before, but i’ve brushed it off bc it hasn’t really mattered—but someone implying that i don’t know shit about taking care of a husky, and that i’m a terrible person for taking the recommendations of the highly experienced rescue ppl we are working with + many authoritative resources... i mean, i am without doubt gonna be the best dog owner in the world, don’t try and tell me otherwise or i will fucking end you.
ps sorry this tza thread about beautiful basil has turned into my liveblog of doglife
yes, also she must not be allowed to make the keeping neko or not decision, don’t give her any more control over you than she has already. you will find a way. xxp
ok j is a champion of champions and has smoothed over the entire thing—we are moving forward!!!!
whoa, did you guys know i was on the sandbox? i didn’t, but i guess i must have registered ages ago. anyway, thanks for everyone’s concern about our horrible dog situation. or our amazing dog horrible situation. either way, after 90 minutes of trying to reason with my landlord, she’s back on board with “moving the process forward,” having forgiven me for being “way out of line,” acting in “bad faith,” and being an “untrustworthy tenant.” and also for “pressuring” her, “taking her out of the decision process,” and “only hearing what i want to hear.” i’m happy i managed to repair everything, since i wanted to start screaming at her instead, but the bad news is that she sees this process taking 6–8 weeks, which means poor neko has to stay in a kennel for two months while we come to visit her on weekends. but, if this whole thing ends, it will have been worth it. i’m just so incredibly drained by the process, and i don’t even have a warm soft dog at me fee to comfort me. (though i do have a warm soft wife, just not at my feet, that would be weird and subjugating.)
i meant to say if this whole thing ends with us taking neko home for good.
omg i am so irate for you guys!!! I would start looking for another place anyway. Dog or not, this kind of manipulation and neediness is such crap. And once neko comes home she could get worse.
And yeah, people are always going to give you unsolicited dog advice. I have learned to just smoke and ignore.
it sounds as if you did great today; i probably would have cried with fury. if the landlady uses email you could write her a bullet point list of what you’ve mutually agreed to so far, and then do it after each future conversation to keep things straightforward. say something like, it was nice talking to you, here’s what we have agreed on, if there’s anything here you need to discuss further please let us know. (of course that will trigger a bit more dithering but at least you’ll have in writing what is going on.)
i was also thinking that if things fell apart again and you did end up calling her bluff and getting neko anyway she might then go through a protracted dilemma about whether to kick you all out or not and find herself unable to go through with it and her indecision could end up serving you for a change.
Lol autocorrect! *smile and ignore!!!!
Xpost
Ytth, i bet your customer relationship management is amazing.
Ytth is the most tactful and diplomatic person I know and amazing at remaining calm and articulate. I would have cried and yelled and told her she was trouble human being, and then we’d be really screwed.
*terrible
I think she is trouble, too, but not the good kind.
LL emailed tonight, after we spent the whole day with neko, and totally reneged: the whole process has just proved “too stressful” and is now adversely affecting her “health”.
so now we are moving and the new-house hunt begins tomorrow.
oh ffs
i’m so sorry
yeah it was pretty devastating, not gonna lie—i cried pretty hard for about 2 hours, then ytth came to the rescue with a plan, so i’m feeling better. i guess we always knew she might do this, but after she said ‘yes’ we figured it was a done deal, just a matter of her getting organized and actually getting us the lease to sign.
Best of luck on finding just the right place quickly for you guys and lovely Neko. I’m sorry it came down to it.
Ugh, I’m so sorry. Hopefully you can find something quickly! <3
basil met my almost seven week old niece today and she adored her! i was so proud! she was on her best behavior and was calm and relaxed and gentle around her :)
Any developments, j?
My coworker impulse bought a boxer puppy this weekend. I have kind of been quietly judging her because i spent MY Saturday volunteering at a doggie adoption event, hanging with four perfectly adorable mixed breed puppies while she dropped $750 on an unregistered pup. Am i just hating because i originally wanted a boxer and am jealous of her adorable dog that everyone at work will inevitably obsess over and love more than basil? Or am i justified in thinking it is dumb to buy a puppy? Btw i love my basil and wouldn’t trade her, quirks and all!
i think your hate is well-placed
totally well placed
i try not to be THAT guy (at least not in front of ppl) but i really find adopting from breeders totally objectionable, when there are a) so many dogs that need homes and b) many breed-specific rescue groups.
boxers are totally ugly imo and i’m glad you got basil instead, she is the cutest of them all.
we are still looking for a place—we found something perfect but missed out, saw two great places over the weekend but pretty sure we’re not getting either of them. but the good news is that, having found out our predicament, ytth’s boss has offered to front the difference for a 20% down payment if we decide to buy, which has opened up another option for us.
also: impulse-buying a $750 dog says a lot (of really bad things) about a person’s ability to take of another creature imo
Right! I know they’d been pondering a pup but this was definitely a spur of the moment thing. Not to mention her husband is currently not working. I don’t even know where this money is coming from and am beginning to suspect she makes a lot more than i do which just makes me even more of a hater (we are same level on org). And yeah there are like five different boxer specific rescues on this area (I know cause i checked them all out last winter!)
ytth’s boss sounds incredible!!! Omg i want to with for him!
Every time i see a husky mix now i think of you guys and i want it to work out so badly!

Oops sideways. Anyway...four of these little guys = my saturday afternoon. So adorable.
yeah his boss is just like... weirdly awesome. he just got a bunch more vacation days bc boss is all “if x is the standard/average number of vacation days in this industry, then i think we should be way above that”.
puppies!!!!!!!!!!
up all night to pet
we are getting close... fingers crossed! found a place, stand-alone house—it’s really cute, and has some nice little quirky features/lots of character BUT it’s not the greatest location for us and it’s pretty small. we’ve had our application approved so now we just need to decide. gonna go back for one more look on thursday but i think we’re gonna take it. neko could be with us in less than 3 weeks!
Oooooh!!!!
lmao basil is hungover from her weekend adventures and i forgot that we had an appt with her trainer. She pretty much slept through the whole thing! What a waste of $$$$ :(
Sorry but that is kind awww-lol
We are waiting to hear about a place we looked at today—it’s a mile from my work so I could take her every day and she’d never have to be home alone. Fingers crossed!
it’s not ~official~ ie we haven’t actually signed the lease but... the place is ours as of saturday!!!!!!!!!!!
So excited for you and lovely neko!!!
Hooray!! OMG, so happy for you all!
that’s awesome!
(also i hope jerks move into your current place)
