The trade would also have allowed Lakers coach Mike Brown to get creative. One of the things that instantly popped into my mind when I heard about the deal (before the NBA put the kibosh on it, that is) was the possibility of Paul and Bryant running the pick and roll together. Bryant rarely acts as the roll man; in fact, he did so only twice last season.

I agree with that somewhat, but 99% of the time these deals are handed out by bad teams that are a mile away from contention (like the Nets with Nene).

Okay hollinger’s already pretty much said my feelings for me above (thanks kev) but man brandon retiring is some sad shit especially because dude is like 4 years younger than me and could run unopposed for mayor in Portland. I have never seen anything remotely like Brandon Roy playing on those knees last year. It was shocking to see a player drag a leg around through multiple nba games like that.
I vividly recall Roy taking a charge, and as he fell he kept his legs straight in the air because he didn’t want to feel the pain of his legs hitting the the ground.

And a qualifying offer amount is decided by the league based on tenure and draft placement. It isn’t negotiated in the first place.

yeah I really don’t understand. Maybe they examined him and there was a little window of time where they could have pulled the offer before he could officially sign it and they negotiated.
so apparently the league has told the Hornets that they need to get younger players and draft picks to make a deal acceptable. Why not just get a 4th team involved who will give up picks/young players for scola/martin/odom?
