Jenny, go to the GM. Leslie says that you can watch that bar review thing on video. Or maybe I'm mixed up.

I like Leslie. More Leslie.

She wasn't exactly arguing against the rebuilding, but she wanted to hear a good argument for it.

Metrosexual Healing (crunkleJ), Friday, 16 February 2007 17:28 (seventeen years ago) link

I'da whooped her ass with a good argument.

JordanC (JordanC), Friday, 16 February 2007 17:31 (seventeen years ago) link

My fucking noggin hurts and I am going to brunch with Courtney and her sister and I don't think my head will not explode and my throat is sore and I'm kind of horny and I have heartburn and last night I accidentally went to Clark's on Clark.

Metrosexual Healing (crunkleJ), Friday, 16 February 2007 17:33 (seventeen years ago) link

I'd like to know how you all would have answered. Give me a good argument.

It was kinda fun hanging with her because it reminded me of being around all my parents' academic friends. I hope I didn't say anything too godawful stupid.

1) Culture...NO has traditions that are both uniquely American and found nowhere else in the country/world

2) A lot of the people who lost their homes lived there their whole lives, owned their homes, etc.. What's a good argument for not allowing them even the chance to rebuild on property that they own?

3) How would you feel if Chicago got bombed out and you lost everything you owned, and you were told to forget about it and start up somewhere else?

JordanC (JordanC), Friday, 16 February 2007 17:42 (seventeen years ago) link

you should have said, "whatever, go get yourself a shirt, lady!"

Did she take her shirt off? Did I leave too soon?

letting a historic city sink into the muck is the kind of thing failing empires do. We should try to keep up appearances, at the very least.

xpost "And on this marshy place once stood the great city of New Orleans, which suffered a massive flood and was left to rot by the already crumbling American civilization."

Dethrone the dictaphone, hit it in it's funny bone (kenan), Friday, 16 February 2007 17:47 (seventeen years ago) link

the federal government stopped picking up the tab for towns along the mississippi river in iowa and missouri that were in flood prone areas. the rationalization being that if you build in a place that is prone to flooding (for the sake of argument let's say a city below sea level and surrounded by the sea) then you shouldn't be surprised at the results.

just playing devil's advocate.

chicago kevin cleaned a lot of plates in memphis (chicago kevin), Friday, 16 February 2007 17:59 (seventeen years ago) link

Well, it's not like the people who are currently homeless because of Katrina are the ones who decided to put the city there. Also, Chicago is built on a swamp that some clever engineer filled in so I figured we could start sinking any minute.

MAN this hangover... she just gets worse and worse.

She picked a Japanese grocery/market in Arlington Heights, I forget what it's called.

Well, the fed government also said the levys would hold and dragged their heels on improving/reinforcing them for decades. If they had held then the overflow and the storm damage would have been comparatively minor.

that's the argument I would make. the federal government has an obligation.

I just saw on the little elevator TV that the US has the highest rate of depressed people in the world, followed by Ukraine.

USA! USA!

i just entered my leave request for next month and even after taking those 4 days i still have over 170 hours of vacation left.

I have 19 days of vacation this year, 9 of which I have to take before the end of June. BUT AS USUAL I CAN'T DO ANYTHING ON THE OFF CHANCE THAT THE BAND MIGHT TOUR, JUST LIKE WE HAVEN'T FOR THE LAST FIVE YEARS.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 16 February 2007 19:12 (seventeen years ago) link

Holy crap, you guys have a lot of vacation.

I wish you could buy vacation days on the black market.

JordanC (JordanC), Friday, 16 February 2007 19:13 (seventeen years ago) link

well, to be fair, until this year i hadn't taken two consecutive days off since june of '03 and that was the only vacation i took in the last 6 years.

chicago kevin cleaned a lot of plates in memphis (chicago kevin), Friday, 16 February 2007 19:14 (seventeen years ago) link

Almost all my vacation in the last two years has gone to band stuff. Taking an actual vacation to, like, go somewhere or relax is almost inconceivable.

(this of course was a sticking point in my last relationship)

JordanC (JordanC), Friday, 16 February 2007 19:16 (seventeen years ago) link

Holy crap, you guys have a lot of vacation.

That's 10 days (two work weeks) of yearly vacation, plus 9 carry-over days, because I kept holding on to last year's vacation on the off chance, etc. etc. My trip to Montreal last year came from 2005's carry-over days, once I realized that the band wouldn't be touring before July.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 16 February 2007 19:18 (seventeen years ago) link

Peoples who are planning on going to the GM tonight: what time are you thinking of arriving? I'm trying to work out a ride, and also considering seating, etc.

xposts I have 21 days to deal with somehow, and absolutely no clue as to what to do with them. I'm kinda leaning towards Costa Rica.

danno martinez (danno martinez), Friday, 16 February 2007 19:20 (seventeen years ago) link

dang, you get your year's worth of vacation right at the start of the year? i earn 6 hours of vacation for every pay period (two weeks).
