two weeks pass...

my dad sent me a picture of a 1911 census page showing my great-great-grandfather michael's family, including my 7 year old great-grandfather michael. my grandfather, father, and brother are all michael. i emailed back i wonder what great-great-great-grandfather's name was? and my dad said "pete." LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

spite n ease (harbl), Thursday, 19 December 2019 01:08 (four years ago) link

well the run had to end somewhere

bet he was peadar rly tho

my dads sister got the same census page printed for them all when it came available a few years back and he opened it in the house i was renting in dublin at the time. the family address for the census was three doors away!

anyway in the same trip home they discovered (tho apparently twas an open secret on the island) that the child in that census- my granda- was left to them by his mother as she was sent to mericay in disgrace. he was raised by his uncle and wife as their own, they being childless themselves.

when they moved back home and he inherited the land, the cousins (otherwise in line) never got over it and scuff up the right-of-way to the pier to this very day.

anyway, michaels all the way up in my lot too, until a pj who ran the smallest licensed pub in the country on the island in the late 1800's according to the sign still in the shed down home last i checked.

esperantzen (p much resigned to deems), Friday, 20 December 2019 00:31 (four years ago) link

he was probably not pete, that was my dad's dadjoke. it said michael the elder was a "shopkeeper." i wonder what the shop was. it was limerick, they must have moved at some point because i think my grandfather was from clare. we gotta do a thing like they do on pbs where they showed bernie sanders and larry david were cousins and find out we are cousins but that isn't so hard in ireland i guess, the west virginia of countries

gordie and dingle are investigating the incident.

toadstool might (tehresa), Thursday, 15 October 2020 22:43 (three years ago) link

Ah see now that is interesting

Because the hnnngordie pronunciation is sheer Montrose speak, pure RTE and never actually heard in the hnnnnwild

But paschal takes it to hnnnnextremnnnnes

But the boys up the hill, yeah I know fellas talk like that my age- not the exact accent even, but the staccato bursts of suddenly-released furious nonsense.

Dingle was always Dingle but they made it into dingle-an-dangen but there was a revolt and now it's just Dingle again

I was there only last week and it's about as beautiful as we have, but obv the bucks staling the yos would be a concern in terms of a sandbox retreat there

was working fitting kitchens one summer a life ago and I walked into this apartment building we were working on that was getting a lot done on a few different units at once between electrics, kitchens, plastering and all that,so there were strange faces about the whole time. walked into a room getting painted by one of the first black guys I'd ever seen irl (I'm irish btw) and v likely the first I'd ever had spoken with, viz, at high volume from himself, HOWROOBI.
Well you can imagine, rly. I said ? in not as many words, being 16 and totally struck by the moment and wanting not to be unfriendly or awkward but at that stage of development socially where all I was projecting to the world was awkward unfriendliness. bastard had a gleam in his eye as he repeated happily HOWROOBI and at this stage I'm mugging like an early career Hugh Laurie, not wanting to say anything as obvious or stupid as "sorry I only speak english" (and being 16 still as apt to claim honours French, pass irish and three words of Dutch in any such sentence in any case).

dude advances, fuckin gleam in his eye now, slows it right down like I'm the idiot I'm clearly appearing to be, HOWR-OOBI, this is shit, I'm all but about to run out in agonised bewilderment or attempt a Chevy Chasesque bluff of massive proportions along the lines of generic multinational welcoming custom, when a fella walks in thats working with him:

HOWROOBI, GRAND HOWROOBI, GRAND. DOES THIS YUNG LAD NOT TAAAAWKATALL?

fuckin corkmen.

still didnt understand a word out of either of them the rest of the week, but yknow at least it felt better kinda thing.

― post you had fecund thoughts about (darraghmac), Wednesday, March 4, 2015 10:50 PM

he done the same thing all week to everyone, the rest of em just muttered "sorry only english" I think I was his favourite tbh

one month passes...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-fNzwo1iMA

A four-year-old in Northern Ireland had quite a to-do list on October 24. Caroline O’Neill recorded this video of her imaginative son Darragh going over everything he had planned for the day – only one day after he got his driver’s license, he said.

O’Neill told Storyful her son is a “very busy man,” as the lad notes in the video.

“He loves to work hard and farm the land with his brother and daddy and grandas,” she said. “He is a hardworking wee boy.”

In the video Darragh can be heard going through the impressive pretend list, which includes picking up the keys to the car he just bought, putting in tiles in the house he’s building, cleaning windows, putting up barbed wire, cutting sheep, and much more.
