"I decided to give Lee Perry another chance, and Blackboard Jungle Dub seems the place to start."

Yeah it's a great place to start if you don't listen to anything anyone else says.

I mean that's a great album, but as I said on that other thread if you want to be convinced of Perry's genius that's not the first place I would turn.

perry's productions for other people > his own albums

violent j (sandboxhulkington), Saturday, 30 December 2006 18:21 (seventeen years ago) link

i realize this is neither a new nor controversial statement, but i feel it bears repeating

violent j (sandboxhulkington), Saturday, 30 December 2006 18:21 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah also Blackboard Jungle Dub is at least as much a King Tubby dub album as it as Perry dub album. If you want a Perry dub album then get Super Ape (which is the only Perry record that might contradict Violent J's equation above, I guess.)

revolution dub > blackboard jungle dub

Have you heard the Auralux reissue on a decent stereo? That version sounds miles better than the old Clocktower/RAS versions.

I've been listening to Steven Bernstein's "Dybbuk Dub," if that counts.

got horace andy "good vibes" and "full up: best of studio one vol.2" used today. think that's it for me for a while, xmas bonus and gift money all used up.

i've only ever heard the track "good vibes" by horace andy, not the album (or whatever it is) -- but it's a great track!

Next Blood & Fire set will be U-ROY 1969-75. Not sure how much more of that period of U-Roy I need, but could be some great productions which'll make it worthwhile.

Slow release time otherwise. No new Auralux, no new Hot Pot. But in addition to reissueing Brand Pressure Sounds is putting out this which is probably fantastic. Brand is really really underrated btw.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 15 February 2007 18:41 (seventeen years ago) link

That should be re-reissuing Brand. Also curious about this Milton Henry on Wackies, but I can probably wait on that.

i now have the 'no bones..' one mentioned above and african dub 1-4, state of emergency and a studio one comp called "the mighty two". all of it is great

didn't know about that "brand" album

amon (amon), Thursday, 15 February 2007 20:05 (seventeen years ago) link

Wow that's a lot of Joe Gibbs dub. I have the first five you mention and then a couple of vocal/deejay collections. Compared to Channel One or Bunny Lee, Gibbs feels kind of underrepresented in the reissue market actually although apparently he's been pretty difficult to work with so that may be entirely his fault.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 15 February 2007 20:26 (seventeen years ago) link

the mighty 2 comp isn't dub so much as various gibbs/et productions

amon (amon), Saturday, 17 February 2007 01:13 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah I thought that it might be. I might even have that one actually haha. You mean the Heartbeat one, right?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Saturday, 17 February 2007 01:32 (seventeen years ago) link

There is a Soul Jazz one that's pretty good too, Roots of Dancehall or something like that (there are like twelve compilations called Roots of Dancehall aren't there haha.)

still haven't heard them, are they good? the only dubstep i've heard and liked so far is slaughter mob from that old 'grime' comp.

If Sub Oslo releases a record this year I will be so happy.
