bruce palmer: the cycle is complete
the old bootleg of dylans "royal albert hall show"...i think the sound on the uncleaned/remastered boot is better than the official bootlegs 4 version...wider, more arresting

Power pop single of the year, hands down. Jesse from the Carboners (with Dave Carbona and a couple of other non-Carbona sideman) hits us off with three well-executed and well-written Rickenbacker-pop diamonds so surpringly good I almost wish he was doing this full-time instead of that other band. The title cut is something any one of the Nerves would have been proud to have penned, and is on my short-list for song of the year. Actually, it seems a bit more early Jam-like than any US act, and the band seems inspired a bit more by UK songsmiths like Lowe/Weller/Costello, which could be why a fairly non-powerpop guy like me is digging it so much. Not really wimpy at all, with a strong voice, nicely played and laden with hooks. "No Rest (For the Wicked)" is particularly reminiscent of early Elvis C., something I can always get behind. If I'd known how good this was gonna be I would've bought a dozen and given them out as Christmas presents. I give this one an eleven out-of-ten, an A+ and positive feedback on eBay. How can the Douchemaster possibly top this release? Scum stats: 75 only on white, the rest on black for the normal people without a record collecting disorder.(RK)

awesome record that keeps getting better. can't wait to see them next month.

maryclaire bryztwa - byznich demos
ghedalia tazartes - les danseurs de la pluie
daphne oram - oramics 1957-1977 (founder of BBC radiophonic -- this is at least as good as the derbyshire)
toshi ichiyanagi - music for tinguely (obscure tape music of japan volume 5)

last night's concert: http://www.viktoriamullova.com/ playing bach partitas, overtone control bringing out absolutely bizarre notes & chords in the lines that I thought I must have been hallucinating at the time, had to talk to people afterwards to make sure we'd all just heard what we'd heard -- if you ever get a chance to see her, don't think about missing it

thanx for the tips, scott! these are both pretty excellent. "in my room" and the last cut on side A of the jimmy campbell are both totally jams. the charley d & milo is good throughout!

"I Am the Walrus," "Jelly Roll Gum Drop," "The Lantern," and "European Son" - on records. (Except for "The Lantern" because I decided once to buy Satanic Majesties on CD and got rid of a surface noisy vinyl copy I had. This was the one and only time I ever did this. I mean, it sounds clear and all, but CDs suck. My copy of The Velvet Underground and Nico sounds a little surface noisy but I would rather listen to it then a ceedee.)

Willie Nelson's Greatest Hits (& Some That Will Be)
this is pretty awesome, and is more or less my entry point into WN's oeuvre (I've also heard Pretty Paper. And my dad used to play the album with "Pancho & Lefty" when I was younger, but it has been years since I heard that, and I never took it seriously back then anyway).

Am I safe in assuming that I should try his Columbia albums next? Or is a greatest hits the way to go?

Lingbert (Lingbert), Thursday, 15 February 2007 06:07 (seventeen years ago) link

check his Atlantic albums: Phases & Stages is his masterpiece concept LP and Shotgun Willie is hodgepodge w/great songs. Yesterday's Wine on RCA is klassic too. Red Headed Stranger is his best on CBS, after that you're on your own.

They had a track on the last Terrorizer cover CD but one, absolutely incredible number, it is. There's a long instrumental break on it that sounds like porcupine tree, but good. Haven't found any of their rekkids in the store yet though.
