w thewliss?

yeah i saw it in 93 but this time through on dvd i could go back and replay parts with difficult dialogue (for a non-brit). almost a perfect film, i would have liked another actor playing the landlord.

spaghetti occidentali ( Spaghetti Occidentali), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 20:21 (seventeen years ago) link

i liked little children: dream-like and compassionate and i laughed a lot (especially at the narration which was so left field as to be totally wtf every time it happened).

jhoshea (jhoshea), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 20:24 (seventeen years ago) link

I guess I've learned to filter out the "liberal b.s." parts of movies nowadays. If you can get past that, Half Nelson is v. enjoyable. Never seen any of Gosling's other movies...but he wasn't the only one doing a good job in this one, why does he get all the attention?

yawn @ cutty

cousin larry bundgee (bundgee), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 20:34 (seventeen years ago) link

I think Shareeka Epps is getting attention. She was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 20:35 (seventeen years ago) link

Anyway, isn't Half Nelson partially about the failures of liberalism?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 20:37 (seventeen years ago) link

I suppose it's trying to be.

Bill Weber (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 20:40 (seventeen years ago) link

I though it was about a teacher who acts like a rock star, basically.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 21:07 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh holy shit, young Ryan Gosling looks EXACTLY like ilxor Cprek circa 1994. EXACTLY.

nklshs (nklshs), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 21:09 (seventeen years ago) link

has there been a convincing schoolteacher drama, EVER? that French one 3-4 years ago? (Armond White argues for Jon Voight in Conrack, which I've never seen) Can young Ms Epps sing "To Sir with Love"?

Dr M (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 21:21 (seventeen years ago) link

dean would tell you school of rock is convincing

this is cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 21:22 (seventeen years ago) link

My gf turned to each other at the end of the History Boys trailer and were like "Dead Poets Society much?"

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 21:27 (seventeen years ago) link

well, apparently History Boys brings buggery to the fore

Bill Weber (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 21:29 (seventeen years ago) link

I like about a third of Prime of Ms Jean Brodie.

Also: I got Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut, in which Donner gets the Kurosawa and Bunuel treatment. Richard Lester gets nary a compliment when his cut is what made the film vastly superior to its predecessor.

Alfred Soto (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 22:30 (seventeen years ago) link

I think it's unfair that Shareeka Epps is stealing all the acclaim when Dakota Fanning has spent all this time paying her dues and has a plum role in this holiday season's gift to moviegoers called Charlotte's Web. Don't let us down, Screen Actors Guild!

Eric H. (Eric H.), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 22:32 (seventeen years ago) link

Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut

Is this commercially available?

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 23:08 (seventeen years ago) link

the education of shelby knox (bad)
Hustle & Flow director, right? Is it out in theatres, or did it just get dumped to DVD?

milo (milo), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 23:12 (seventeen years ago) link

Donner cut is out on DVD today.

You must be thinking of Black Snake Moan? Education is a documentary about a girl in Texas fighting for sex ed in the schools.

cousin larry bundgee (bundgee), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 23:27 (seventeen years ago) link

Is this commercially available?

Just released today. The first 45 minutes contain new sequences and eliminated others (the Eiffel Tower scenes, Lois Lane hurling herself into the river). Brando is back as Jor-El. The trouble: Donner, annoyed with The Director (he won't even mention Lester by name)'s "corny" humor, substituted purportedly serious sequences which dissolve into camp.

Alfred Soto (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 23:36 (seventeen years ago) link

I thought that I read that the Donner Cut has screen tests in place of a few scenes that were never filmed. Is that true?

cousin larry bundgee (bundgee), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 23:40 (seventeen years ago) link

i like movies set in schools!!

history boys was ok

hank s1ockli (hanks1ockli), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 23:43 (seventeen years ago) link

but do you like school of rock and do you find it to be "convincing"

cousin larry bundgee (bundgee), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 23:56 (seventeen years ago) link

yes. i forgot i was watching a movie. i was there.

hank s1ockli (hanks1ockli), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 00:12 (seventeen years ago) link

I thought that I read that the Donner Cut has screen tests in place of a few scenes that were never filmed. Is that true?

Yup. And Margot Kidder looks quite obviously younger in some sequences.

OK, this sucked for the most part. I'm ashamed that this is promoted as the definitive version.

Missing: the Eiffel Tower, conquest of the small town, and Fortress of Solitude battle sequences.

Alfred Soto (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 00:50 (seventeen years ago) link

Even worse: Donner uses THE EXACT SAME TIME REVERSAL GIMMICK USED IN THE FIRST FILM to wipe Lois' memory. The Superkiss of Forgetfulness in the office -- and Kidder's wonderful enactment of torment preceding it (she reminds Superman that she has to see him in the office every day as Clark) -- are gone.

this is cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 01:35 (seventeen years ago) link

does he use the exact same footage of superman spinning around the earth's orbit from the first film?

cause if so, that is perhaps amazing?

milton parker (milton parker), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 01:37 (seventeen years ago) link

Perhaps. But it isn't.

Lots of giggles, anyway. Interesting to see how fighting scenes have changed, how shocking new styles/moves might have been when they were first seen.

Go figger, the one I don't watch piecemeal, Flags of Our Fathers, has already been pre-chewed into bite-sized bits.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 06:49 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm ashamed that [Donner Supe2] is promoted as the definitive version.

No need for shame unless yr involved in the marketing.

Bill Weber (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 14:26 (seventeen years ago) link

the proposition - the part where ray winstone awakes freaked-out to gunfire and crashes into his bedroom door had me believing that it could be great, but it wasn't, it was good. there was only one part where the nick cave music got really bad but then someone cocked a shotgun and it was over. the cast was sweet and the ending kinda bothered me as it would've been a whole lot more compelling had they made emily watson's character a little more culpable. i like that guy pearce guy, he's good at staggering around looking confused.

The Supes II small town scene was super-shitty. I'm not a fan of old Supes II, tho. Or Donner. But I'm sorta stoked for nu-Supes II. Because I'm stupid.

Nklshs -- once CYE starts developing narrative arcs in S2, it gets better.
