LINUX IS NOT FAT NOR DOES IT HAVE A TERRIBLE MOUSTACHE. Linux is stylish. But quiet and intense.

there to preserve disorder (kenan), Monday, 12 February 2007 16:53 (seventeen years ago) link

dan, i've had snow and 80 degree temps in the same week in may.

chicago kevin has a lust for bacon (chicago kevin), Monday, 12 February 2007 16:54 (seventeen years ago) link

xp to Kenan: Oh please.

Handgun O. Mendocino (pullapartgirl), Monday, 12 February 2007 16:54 (seventeen years ago) link

Have I professed my love for those Mac/PC commercials? They get better and better. I love the latest one with the PC's security. It's so true! And I feel so bad for the sweet little PC! It's not his fault, it's really not.

there to preserve disorder (kenan), Monday, 12 February 2007 16:54 (seventeen years ago) link

And yes, I laughed hard when I saw that photoshop. The Tron guy is one of my internets favorites.

Kenan, how many serious Linux nerds have you met? "Stylish" is not an adjective I'd use for them.

danno martinez (danno martinez), Monday, 12 February 2007 16:54 (seventeen years ago) link

how many serious Linux nerds have you met?

Around... zero. Roughly zero.

there to preserve disorder (kenan), Monday, 12 February 2007 16:55 (seventeen years ago) link

Same here, Kev. Well, maybe 70, not 80. OMG WEATHR CRED LOST!!!

xpost: I can introduce you to some, they'll blow your MIIIIIIND maaan.

danno martinez (danno martinez), Monday, 12 February 2007 16:56 (seventeen years ago) link

god i hate those pc/mac commercials. i want something bad to happen to both of those dudes and if it were to happen on pay-per-view i would purchase it.

chicago kevin has a lust for bacon (chicago kevin), Monday, 12 February 2007 16:56 (seventeen years ago) link

xpost Seriously. Nerds. BIG nerds.

danno martinez (danno martinez), Monday, 12 February 2007 16:57 (seventeen years ago) link

I find the Mac guy pretty irritating, but how can not love PC?

there to preserve disorder (kenan), Monday, 12 February 2007 16:57 (seventeen years ago) link

the mac pc ads have the opposite of the desired effect, i think.

deej (deej), Monday, 12 February 2007 16:59 (seventeen years ago) link

Actually, despite being a Mac user, I hate the Mac guy too. Especially when he says shit like: "I manage my digital photos, and connect to my blog and the iTunes store." WELL, I USE IT TO D/L MAD T0RRENTZ AND HACK THE GIBSON OMGWTFLOL

danno martinez (danno martinez), Monday, 12 February 2007 16:59 (seventeen years ago) link

(bonus points for naming "hack the Gibson" reference -- I bet... jaymc gets it)

danno martinez (danno martinez), Monday, 12 February 2007 17:00 (seventeen years ago) link

I hear he loves cyberpunk.

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 12 February 2007 17:01 (seventeen years ago) link

Hahaha

That phrase is too easily googleable.

danno martinez (danno martinez), Monday, 12 February 2007 17:02 (seventeen years ago) link

I love the actor who plays PC, but I find the Mac guy a little insincere in his supposed niceness. His smug superiority still oozes through and I resent that and, frankly, don't want to be his friend at all.

Also, the Mac guy stars in some baaaaaaaad movies, while the PC guy is on the Daily Show.

and I, too, have a preference for Macs as my home computing platform of choice.

Handgun O. Mendocino (pullapartgirl), Monday, 12 February 2007 17:02 (seventeen years ago) link

so i saw on the weather channel it's snowing up there. i kinda wish it would snow some down here. we've had snow only 2 days so far, and that's actually more than normal. it's 46 degrees right now and high of 58. i guess i should be happy i'll be moving in the summer, but then that will probably spoil me and then come november/december it'll be extra brutal!

stingy (stingewell), Monday, 12 February 2007 17:11 (seventeen years ago) link

one of my bosses didn't feel like shoveling his driveway so he stayed home today. prick.

chicago kevin has a lust for bacon (chicago kevin), Monday, 12 February 2007 17:12 (seventeen years ago) link

WAHT

There is like 2 inches?!

danno martinez (danno martinez), Monday, 12 February 2007 17:14 (seventeen years ago) link

yes, i guess his FOUR WHEEL DRIVE TRUCK would have a problem in such conditions.

chicago kevin has a lust for bacon (chicago kevin), Monday, 12 February 2007 17:15 (seventeen years ago) link

i guess i should be happy i'll be moving in the summer

Maaaaaaybe. If we'd not screwed up our move-out date last summer, we would have had to move on the hottest day of the year during which the temp was above 100. Moving in summer is not without its potential pitfalls. But then again, moving ANY time is pretty much an exercise in suck.

We moved to Chicago from Greensboro, NC in August, but it was a bizarrely cold August. I had moved with the assumption that I could augment my southern climate wardrobe in time for winter but when we got here, I was pretty sure I was going to freeze to death and die before Halloween.

Handgun O. Mendocino (pullapartgirl), Monday, 12 February 2007 17:16 (seventeen years ago) link

I do not feel well at all. I want to go home.

there to preserve disorder (kenan), Monday, 12 February 2007 17:20 (seventeen years ago) link

Why is there no PDF reader installed on this computer? WHY TELL ME WHY

Handgun O. Mendocino (pullapartgirl), Monday, 12 February 2007 17:22 (seventeen years ago) link

oh yeah? i'll be moving (most likely, it's not official yet) from chapel hill. nc natives unite!

stingy (stingewell), Monday, 12 February 2007 17:23 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm actually from Delaware, but Jeff is from eastern NC and we lived in Greensboro for four and five years, respectively.

Handgun O. Mendocino (pullapartgirl), Monday, 12 February 2007 17:26 (seventeen years ago) link

did you go to guilford?

stingy (stingewell), Monday, 12 February 2007 17:27 (seventeen years ago) link

No, but our upstairs neighbors did. I got a certificate of legal administration from Greensboro College and was down to Wake Forest or where I currently go for law school. That's my entire connection to the world of NC higher education institutions.

Handgun O. Mendocino (pullapartgirl), Monday, 12 February 2007 17:31 (seventeen years ago) link

And no offense to the Demon Deacons, but I am glad almost every day that I made the choice that I did.

Handgun O. Mendocino (pullapartgirl), Monday, 12 February 2007 17:32 (seventeen years ago) link

sure are a lot of former north carolinians on the chilx threads.

chicago kevin has a lust for bacon (chicago kevin), Monday, 12 February 2007 17:33 (seventeen years ago) link

hmmm, what's the significance of you choosing the demons over the deacons jenny?

chicago kevin has a lust for bacon (chicago kevin), Monday, 12 February 2007 17:33 (seventeen years ago) link

IT'S AN INVASION

there to preserve disorder (kenan), Monday, 12 February 2007 17:34 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah, not really a fan of winston-salem. i had brothers go to guilford and unc-g though.

stingy (stingewell), Monday, 12 February 2007 17:34 (seventeen years ago) link

did any of you go see lindstrom last week?

stingy (stingewell), Monday, 12 February 2007 17:37 (seventeen years ago) link

hmmm, what's the significance of you choosing the demons over the deacons jenny?

You know, I had my acceptances in hand and was down to the wire, decision-making time, and was visiting my family in Delaware and there was a DP/Wake bball game on TV and I knew that my mind was pretty made up when I found myself really, really pulling for DP to win because I had this idea that the outcome of that game would be determinative in my choice. They won. Here I am.

Also I hate organized religion and love Satan.

who recommends spending one day of yr life in Springfield to see the Lincoln stuff?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 12 February 2007 17:42 (seventeen years ago) link

the springfield chamber of commerce?

chicago kevin has a lust for bacon (chicago kevin), Monday, 12 February 2007 17:43 (seventeen years ago) link

I do! You could even do two. But more than that is asking for it.

The Lincoln Museum is great. The Library is not as exciting. I also recommend visiting his tomb and while you're at it, check out the Museum of Funeral Customs. Both capital buildings are neat, as is the Illinois State Museum.

Just MAKE SURE you are going on a couple of days when everything is open. Also, bring a car.

Handgun O. Mendocino (pullapartgirl), Monday, 12 February 2007 17:51 (seventeen years ago) link

Here are pictures of when Jeff and I went to Springfield last year.

there to preserve disorder (kenan), Monday, 12 February 2007 18:02 (seventeen years ago) link

Speaking of the south, I'm having collards, corn bread, and black coffee for lunch.

(bonus points for naming "hack the Gibson" reference -- I bet... jaymc gets it)

I don't know what that is.

I was at my department's potluck brunch for the last hour. As usual, I dominated conversation because copy editors are not, by and large, a talkative bunch.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 12 February 2007 18:07 (seventeen years ago) link

Also, bring a car.

well, can't -- I've never driven; so it'll be one day, next summer I hope. Thanks.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 12 February 2007 18:09 (seventeen years ago) link

We didn't bring a car, either. It only really became a problem on the third night when we ran out of eating options. Most everything in walking distance from downtown closes at like, four, and all the recommended restaurants were out in the stripmall wasteland. Also, the tomb/funeral museum is a little far out but we took a cab there and walked back and it was just fine.

Handgun O. Mendocino (pullapartgirl), Monday, 12 February 2007 18:12 (seventeen years ago) link

the snow is gorgeous today. I wish I could go skiing.

horseshoe (horseshoe), Monday, 12 February 2007 18:13 (seventeen years ago) link

One for the spreadsheet: I hate skiing. I hate snowboarding more, if that's even possible.

Handgun O. Mendocino (pullapartgirl), Monday, 12 February 2007 18:27 (seventeen years ago) link

I've never done either.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 12 February 2007 18:28 (seventeen years ago) link

I love skiing, but I love waterskiing even more.

there to preserve disorder (kenan), Monday, 12 February 2007 18:30 (seventeen years ago) link

I also hate waterskiing, or as I think of it, "Sport of 1000 Horrible Wedgies." Anything that requires grace/balance is right out for me.

I am a good swimmer, though. I am okay walking, too. Mostly.

Handgun O. Mendocino (pullapartgirl), Monday, 12 February 2007 18:32 (seventeen years ago) link

I know what you're getting for your birthday.

I've never even had the opportunity to ski, water or otherwise. You guys must be rich. [/contentious statement meant to incite discussion to keep me entertained this afternoon]
