well there is something to be said about the difficulty of searching for a new plotline when you've met everyone's love interest, mother, pet etc. etc.

the show prob should have just kept introducing new regular characters

i really don't believe anyone proposing some kind of 'experimental' direction for the simpsons would actually watch and enjoy episodes like that if they were actually done

xpost that was 22 minutes tho, i'm saying a whol;e season with a narrative arc like the baltimore drug television show that the tumblr whites like

this is a comedy show

there's no inherent comedy in a narrative arc

they can put it on HBO and hire disgusting simpsons slash fic artists to animate the sex scenes

feel like "characters team up to go retrieve the city's beloved lemon tree from a neighbouring town" testifies to the onetime originality of the show though; routinely introducing others is fine but i feel like part of what makes the early eps so good is their scale & the fact that it is v 'texture of family life' orientated, about someone getting a new substitute teacher or remembering something or having whatever small disagreement w/a neighbour, stuff that's just a conceit to map amusing 'workings of a family' dialogue onto

yes. i always think of the weird switch when there was understandably suddenly no more lionel hutz & troy mcclure in the show, & suddenly the awful like "generic marketing people" guys, network execs in suits or whatever who spoke flatly & represented corporate culture. like it was a landmark moment, i can't really imagine any of the writers are as invested in the emotional side it once had.

i bet there are lots of young writers working on the show now who grew up with it and are trying very hard to do their best and honor the show's legacy, which makes it all the more tragic. stuff like that makes me think of what a terrible thing it could be to collaborate with your heroes or be part of something that big.

schlump, I think you're describing the Simpsons-as-sitcom era, as opposed to the Simpsons-as-cartoon death spiral.

like if matt groening walked into the room right now and asked any of us to fix the show, we'd all blow it, every one of us, no matter what we'd like to imagine (xpost)

well I think earlier writers were prob also more willing to shape characters into something new whereas today they're expected to have characters act 'in character'

I really think the Simpsons audience is under 21s who dont really know any better, like the same way we watched Cheers or Married With Children into their dire last seasons

did Cheers really fall off that much? i haven't seen enough reruns in way too long to remember, but i always had the sense it at least had about as good an 11th season as any show that got that far

You should try Regular Show which has been reasonably good lately and was really on when it first started.
There's a few good shows on tv now that basically are animation with live action actors: workaholics, sunny, modern family. single camera modern gonzo comedy sans laugh tracks might just as well be cartoons in my mind

some dude, can do me a solid and rank these 12 shows from "just dogshit terrible" to "you should basically kill yourself if you watched more than one episode of this"

hey there was one episode on the other day where it was in the future and they were all the age they were supposed to be and and homer wasn't a drunk and maggie was a rock star. it was kind of cool. it could be almost ten years old though as far as know.
