So you know that if the last episode I saw was I watched online well after it aired because I heard Alan Moore, Dan Clowes, and Art Spiegelman were on it, and I have no idea when that was, the series has become no more than wallpaper.

Ryan LZA (Leee), Friday, 30 December 2011 18:02 (twelve years ago) link

they should just give the Simpsons to Seth mcfarlane, lol think abt it, watch the Internet go wild

yes

Mordy, Friday, 30 December 2011 18:21 (twelve years ago) link

tbh i keep waiting for simpsons writers to just totally give up trying to be 'the simpsons' and find creative freedom unburdened by the weight of history. like a six episode serialized run abt the rich interior life of todd flanders w/o any jokes (or really i guess attempts at jokes) a goof episode where every homer line gets sd by lisa long ibsenesque episodes abt the cypress creek bourgeoisie

tumblr wights (є(٥_ ٥)э), Friday, 30 December 2011 18:24 (twelve years ago) link

mordy otm

some dude (Mr. Stevenson #2), Friday, 30 December 2011 18:25 (twelve years ago) link

like at this point 'the simpsons' is such a richly detailed world to set stories in couldnt someone find interesting ones to tell outside of w/e crappy jokeless adventures are being inflicted on the simpsons in their own familial hell????

tumblr wights (є(٥_ ٥)э), Friday, 30 December 2011 18:26 (twelve years ago) link

maybe they should all die in a fire

i love this & think it's p much otm, & i kinda remember that south park getting good was the result of them embracing the sort of roaming-eye-around-the-village thing in which we dipped into weird strands of suburban life, rather than just played with the kids. but i think the thing that it requires is just originality & good writing, rather than reliance on guest stars & absurd premises - shit like the reclaiming-the-lemon-tree-from-shelbyville ep was a great exploration of a weird story in the daily life of a small town, & they don't do that anymore, they always end up on safari or in japan or swapping jobs with steve martin or w/e (tbh even this is lazy crit based on what it was like five years ago, i can't imagine where it's stooped to now)

The show is said to fill the void created by the cancellation of King of the Hill, which Bob's Burgers executive producer Jim Dauterive worked on for nearly its entire run.[5]

Hongro4AS (nakhchivan), Friday, 30 December 2011 18:38 (twelve years ago) link

BTW, I have mused about writing a Ulysses-inspired episode done in an ineluctable "Trilogy of Errors"/"Simpsons Bible Stories" modality. Debating on opening lines: "The Simpsons are going to Ireland!" or "Introibo ad altare Dei."

IEEE (Leee), Friday, 30 December 2011 18:38 (twelve years ago) link

the void in the schedules or the void

is bob of bob's burgers supposed to be asian? I can't tell

nice catch cuauhtemoc blanco niño (dayo), Friday, 30 December 2011 18:39 (twelve years ago) link

whiney if you hate home movies then nobody really needs to hear your opinion on bob's burgers

some dude (Mr. Stevenson #2), Friday, 30 December 2011 18:39 (twelve years ago) link

well there is something to be said about the difficulty of searching for a new plotline when you've met everyone's love interest, mother, pet etc. etc.

the show prob should have just kept introducing new regular characters

iatee, Friday, 30 December 2011 18:40 (twelve years ago) link

yeah the premise of the show is 'most hairy-armed asian man in the world opens a burger joint' xpost

some dude (Mr. Stevenson #2), Friday, 30 December 2011 18:40 (twelve years ago) link

asians can be hairy-armed

IEEE (Leee), Friday, 30 December 2011 18:43 (twelve years ago) link

seriously tho i have no idea what the simpsons would have to lose from making good episodes again

What if they did like a 24-style plotline that runs over a whole season; I'd watch that.

Didn't they have a 24 episode with Kief and Chloe?

IEEE (Leee), Friday, 30 December 2011 18:45 (twelve years ago) link

i really don't believe anyone proposing some kind of 'experimental' direction for the simpsons would actually watch and enjoy episodes like that if they were actually done

some dude (Mr. Stevenson #2), Friday, 30 December 2011 18:46 (twelve years ago) link

xpost that was 22 minutes tho, i'm saying a whol;e season with a narrative arc like the baltimore drug television show that the tumblr whites like

uncle bannmee who can recall his past logins (dealwithit.gif), Friday, 30 December 2011 18:47 (twelve years ago) link

this is a comedy show

iatee, Friday, 30 December 2011 18:49 (twelve years ago) link

there's no inherent comedy in a narrative arc

iatee, Friday, 30 December 2011 18:49 (twelve years ago) link

they can put it on HBO and hire disgusting simpsons slash fic artists to animate the sex scenes

some dude (Mr. Stevenson #2), Friday, 30 December 2011 18:52 (twelve years ago) link

well there is something to be said about the difficulty of searching for a new plotline when you've met everyone's love interest, mother, pet etc. etc.

feel like "characters team up to go retrieve the city's beloved lemon tree from a neighbouring town" testifies to the onetime originality of the show though; routinely introducing others is fine but i feel like part of what makes the early eps so good is their scale & the fact that it is v 'texture of family life' orientated, about someone getting a new substitute teacher or remembering something or having whatever small disagreement w/a neighbour, stuff that's just a conceit to map amusing 'workings of a family' dialogue onto

ABSTRACT: is my heart. A stranger (schlump), Friday, 30 December 2011 18:53 (twelve years ago) link

they prob just need better writers

Cooper Chucklebutt, Friday, 30 December 2011 18:54 (twelve years ago) link

Lol some dude

uncle bannmee who can recall his past logins (dealwithit.gif), Friday, 30 December 2011 18:55 (twelve years ago) link

yes. i always think of the weird switch when there was understandably suddenly no more lionel hutz & troy mcclure in the show, & suddenly the awful like "generic marketing people" guys, network execs in suits or whatever who spoke flatly & represented corporate culture. like it was a landmark moment, i can't really imagine any of the writers are as invested in the emotional side it once had.

ABSTRACT: is my heart. A stranger (schlump), Friday, 30 December 2011 18:56 (twelve years ago) link

i bet there are lots of young writers working on the show now who grew up with it and are trying very hard to do their best and honor the show's legacy, which makes it all the more tragic. stuff like that makes me think of what a terrible thing it could be to collaborate with your heroes or be part of something that big.

some dude (Mr. Stevenson #2), Friday, 30 December 2011 18:58 (twelve years ago) link

schlump, I think you're describing the Simpsons-as-sitcom era, as opposed to the Simpsons-as-cartoon death spiral.

IEEE (Leee), Friday, 30 December 2011 18:59 (twelve years ago) link

like if matt groening walked into the room right now and asked any of us to fix the show, we'd all blow it, every one of us, no matter what we'd like to imagine (xpost)

some dude (Mr. Stevenson #2), Friday, 30 December 2011 18:59 (twelve years ago) link

well I think earlier writers were prob also more willing to shape characters into something new whereas today they're expected to have characters act 'in character'

some dude (Mr. Stevenson #2), Friday, 30 December 2011 19:08 (twelve years ago) link

yeah but primetime cartoons on big networks have to aim for ~mainstreamer~ tastes which means they have to walk a thin line cause your mom has to like them too. overall it's prob easier to make a good cartoon show than ever.

Agree with poster way above, it'd be great to see utterly bizarre and experimental Simpsons. i feel like the characters and storylines are so well known that you don't even need jokes for weird narrative episodes to be funny. Good use of the existing capital.

Of course nothing like that would ever happen, unless whoever has control over the creative direction totally loses his/her mind.

yeah, that jumped to mind when i wrote that. I'd love to see, say, an episode where Milhouse falls in love with Bart and the entire thing is like some uber sentimental after-school special. No jokes, just really uncomfortable emotions and out-of-step seriousness. i'd find that funny, at least.

Benjamin K. Blandon, Saturday, 31 December 2011 20:50 (twelve years ago) link

wtf was that

judith, Saturday, 31 December 2011 20:53 (twelve years ago) link

i want to see an episode where Milhouse and Bart are wrestling, put each other in sleeper holds, and both pass out, and lie on the ground motionless for the next 18 minutes

whiney so otm re: archer

Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 31 December 2011 21:42 (twelve years ago) link

yeah absolutely, IMO Archer is kinda in the same realm as stuff like Family Guy where the jokes come so fast and are spoken so confidently that you kind of feel like it just has to be funnier than it actually is

the only animation that really impressed me lately was some weird Adult Swim show called SuperJail (or something like that) that I caught while flipping through channels - I don't know if it was funny per se but the animation was really something

...or fold laundry? (J0n Arbuckle), Saturday, 31 December 2011 22:49 (twelve years ago) link

also that "bart the general" clip is really amazing, everyone should be watching this

...or fold laundry? (J0n Arbuckle), Saturday, 31 December 2011 22:49 (twelve years ago) link

like all that dumb "Dead Bart" creepypasta stuff was pretty annoying but it did strike me how cool it would be if they really did make an episode that was totally surreal and uncomfortable to watch. South Park kinda crossed this line with the "You're Getting Old" episode but I'd love it if they just once did something totally inexplicable
