"Wasted" being basically a 'lol white people' song to begin with makes that at least kind of thematically appropriate or meta or something

we need more videos of black college kids rapping bon iver songs

max max max max, Thursday, 29 December 2011 20:02 (twelve years ago) link

it's pretty hilarious when kanye has charlie wilson dub backup vocals all over bon iver's parts on his songs to make it sound as if he's 'soulful'

why do black ppl never want to bon iver?

i couldnt find it but there exists a p rad 'rap' version of bon jovi's wanted dead or alive somewhere on youtube i know it oh im sure of it

Can we put together a sliding scale of how racist ironic comedy covers are? I'm trying to figure out if that Gourds' Snoop cover is more or less racist than Karmin.

shakur rump (I left my login in El Sandboxo), Thursday, 29 December 2011 20:08 (twelve years ago) link

there's just this really weird fuckin dynamic to me tho in white dudes on the internet doing the finger-wag about anybody doing a "funny" rap cover. (to the best of my knowledge everybody on this thread calling out texts from bennett is a white male.) it's like white rap heads seem to think that rap = the whole of the black experience in America, and therefore doing a piss-take on a rap song is racist, which is a weird thing to thing - rap's a black art form but it doesn't stand in for blackness necessarily, right? (can, in the mouths of racists, obviously, but to accept that is kind of to accept a questionable premise.) and to conflate the two at 100% seems bizarre to me. I don't contest that like 100% of "hilarious" rap covers suck ass, that's kinda clearly true, but I'm with iatee, it's not necessarily racism that's at work there, and I think there's a weird sort of...racism? at work in insisting that if somebody does a dumb rap cover, they're being racist. which isn't to deny that there are doubtless a trillion nakedly racist "hilarious" rap covers, I'm sure there are & fuck 'em all, but at some point ppl are going to have to accept that rap is the most dominant, most widely-enjoyed form of music on the planet, and that means that people are going to cover it in all kindsa ways, and find shit funny about it.

tl;dr some white rap heads sound like caricature "that's not funny!" angry feminists about this kinda thing and I say this as a caricature angry feminist

i feel like there's a weird assumption that EVERYONE calling these things wack/unfunny/etc. is agreeing they're race crimes, which is really not the case.

some dude (Mr. Stevenson #2), Thursday, 29 December 2011 20:10 (twelve years ago) link

er hate crimes

some dude (Mr. Stevenson #2), Thursday, 29 December 2011 20:11 (twelve years ago) link

of course the very reason you can't do a 'sliding scale' of Racism is that it's a superword that once introduced into a conversation can't be qualified or blunted the slightest bit

This is the part when I get confused and wonder if ships got the sarcasm in my post or not, it was really just a roundabout way of reminding everyone of "hilarious" bluegrass covers of rap songs from jambands.

shakur rump (I left my login in El Sandboxo), Thursday, 29 December 2011 20:13 (twelve years ago) link

well i got that it was not a totally serious post yeah, but the way you phrased it got me thinking

i think when i was a little teenage shithead i did have a laugh at the 'soothing white announcer voice' spoken word version of "Gin & Juice" but by the time the Gourds one was floating around Napster being credited to Phish and a hundred other bands i was old enough to be like OK enough of this kind of thing.

but at some point ppl are going to have to accept that rap is the most dominant, most widely-enjoyed form of music on the planet

well, exactly, which is why predicating a joke on ITS WHITE PPL... AND THEYRE RAPPING! is really p racist and also stupid, like rap is hardly this outrageous and foreign thing to point and gawk at

guys like whiney have been pissed forever that rap is literally the most popular music in the history of the world though - it ruins shit for them and they're gonna stay mad

coop otm, this is a situation where i feel pretty comfortable painting with a broad brush

i mean part of what is at play here is that acoustic or whatever covers of rap songs are such a heinous crime against art that "racism" is one of very few concepts that really approaches how truly horrendous they are

max max max max, Thursday, 29 December 2011 20:25 (twelve years ago) link

haha totally

um that seems slightly anti-rap...?

i basically hate rap

max max max max, Thursday, 29 December 2011 20:27 (twelve years ago) link

I think these covers veer towards racist when they go to great lengths to make it clear that they've "rescued" these "secretly great songs" from "rap crap" and put them to "real music". Or maybe thats just rockism.

I came in to find out why "Texts from Bennett" was churning up so much dust in New Answers. I should have known the answer was simple: clusterfuck.

like obv the underlying production of rap resists being able to be co-opted by 'musicianly' means (and obv there has been a long long tradition of of disregarding hip hop as not real music bcz of lack of melody or instruments or etc) but to say that ALL acoustic covers of rap songs are inherently evil + unforgivable crimes against art (even if every single one up until now has in fact been; a dubious claim anyways) is to do it a real disservice and to deny one of the most amazing things about rap, which is the pop music universality of it that aero was talking about in his previous post
