way to quell those accusations of rampant misogyny in yr films mr brewer! jesus christ.

The Wild Blue Yonder
Herzog's "science fiction fantasy" starring Brad "Raymond" Dourif
Treadwellesque ranting from Dourif, ace mathmatician fu, NASA thigh show, SCUBA ice caves, return to the Mists of Amazon. And the music is amazing. Could be seen as final chapter in a trilogy of Fata Morgana and Lessons of Darkness.

sexyDancer (sexyDancer), Thursday, 28 December 2006 15:27 (seventeen years ago) link

I watched that yesterday! I fucking LOVED it, the music especially (I will pay many $$$ for the OST if necessary), as well as Brad Dourif's angry alien shtick, also I crave zero-gravity now in a bad way.

I personally loved Hostel, but probably would've enjoyed it more if I hadn't known going in A) who Eli Roth is, and B) what kind of movies he makes, ie had just assumed it was National Lampoons Amsterdam Vacation and not known it was eventually to become screaming maiming cannibalism fun-time hour.

Starship Troopers = STILL AWESOME.

Next: Pirates of Caribbean 2 with fam, Barton Fink, Dog Soldiers

Yeah, going in expecting SUPER HORROR FUN TIME did detract from Hostel, but my main problems were totally unrelated to that (BORING, kind of offensive to my vagina, etc.). Also Cabin Fever was major lulz and this was not funny at all???

seeing children of men tonight. very excited.

'my neighbor totoro' - catbus!

'kontroll' - good but not great, it slows down a bit when it starts to focus on the lead dude's half-hearted hunt for the killer and his attempt at romance with the admittedly awesome girl in the bear costume. it reminded me a lot of that weird franke potente slasher film 'creep', which takes place in the london underground.

bohren un der club of gear (bohren un der club of gear), Thursday, 28 December 2006 18:26 (seventeen years ago) link

Totoro, hooray! So good.

I kind of forgot about Talledega Nights. I basically liked 2 parts, Mos Def as a racing fan, and the thing about Jesus singing lead for Skynyrd and dude was hammered drunk in the front row. The rest wasn't exactly UNfunny, but not really funny either.

Watched Blade Runner again with my sister, who ranted for a while about what a fucking awful movie it was. I'm just sorta indifferent toward it. I wanted to watch The Sacrifice, anyway. Suppose that's for tonight.

clotpoll (clotpoll), Thursday, 28 December 2006 20:26 (seventeen years ago) link

Saw the BBC production of The Line of Beauty -- staid and straight, compared to the novel.

Alfred Soto (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 28 December 2006 21:05 (seventeen years ago) link

28 Up
first one that I didn't find 100% compelling. maybe I'm watching them a little too close together (or maybe it's that most of em hadn't changed very much from 21 to 28)

dmr (dmr), Thursday, 28 December 2006 21:15 (seventeen years ago) link

Figuring that any film maudit widely hated by ILX must be worth something, I'm gonna run up to 42nd St in a half-hour to catch one of the last screenings of The Fountain.

Dr M (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 28 December 2006 21:16 (seventeen years ago) link

fwiw, Sicinski hated The Fountain a lot

Eric H. (Eric H.), Thursday, 28 December 2006 22:31 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm about to have a three or four movie day. Dreamgirls, check. Later it's onto United 93, Volver and perhaps maybe Last King of Scotland. Odds on me forgetting I'd even seen Dreamgirls at all by the end of the day: good.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Thursday, 28 December 2006 22:33 (seventeen years ago) link

hahaha "enjoy," morbz

a mediocre black-and-white cookie in a cellophane wrapper (hanks1ockli), Thursday, 28 December 2006 23:25 (seventeen years ago) link

I'll say. I watched Devil Wears Prada instead of United 93.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 29 December 2006 00:32 (seventeen years ago) link

The Meryl Streep-Stanley Tucci scenes in DWP were a lot more fun than United 93.

Alfred Soto (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 29 December 2006 00:37 (seventeen years ago) link

Dreamgirls is really good, though, Eric!

horseshoe (horseshoe), Friday, 29 December 2006 00:51 (seventeen years ago) link

I like the real Motown musical (i.e. The Wiz) way better, though.

Volver something of a letdown. I wasn't expecting fireworks, but maybe I was expecting a few more women...?

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 29 December 2006 04:06 (seventeen years ago) link

recently:

children of men -- yes, good.

days of being wild -- it's weird watching wong's movies in reverse (as tears go by is the only one i haven't seen yet), seeing his various obsessions germinate. so this kind of felt like in the mood for love for kids. great, of course.

domino -- felt like an extended infomercial for keira knightley, sadly lacking an 800 number. fun for about an hour, but i was real bored by the end.

tipsy mothra (tipsy mothra), Friday, 29 December 2006 05:46 (seventeen years ago) link

children of men - mostly good

shakey mo jopotatoes (bundgee), Friday, 29 December 2006 06:37 (seventeen years ago) link

Godfather 2 - disc 1

Fucking Netflix! Why don't both discs just come together?! And why did I think I'd be able to "just watch a little of it while I eat my dinner"?

The Fountain is a splendid failure, there shd b more movies like it.

Armond White: Sparkle > Dreamgirls

Dr M (Dr Morbius), Friday, 29 December 2006 21:46 (seventeen years ago) link

the good shepherd

it was all right. i found it less dull than a lot of others have. maybe it's from reading all that crap about the cold war and trying figure out which characters were surrogates/composites for various historical figures. (crudup=kim philby!).

it was probably a bit too self-serious and dour, though.

Anyone else keep expecting every male cast-member to come out of the closet?

hahahahaha otm!

today i watched passin' it on (about black panthers) and winter soldier and this week i have also watched mr. death, fog of war, american dream (i like barbara koppple) and something else. i don't know why i am so documentary craaaaaaaaazy

caitlin oh no (harbl), Saturday, 30 December 2006 03:55 (seventeen years ago) link

there is nothing really 'splendid' about the fountain.

a mediocre black-and-white cookie in a cellophane wrapper (hanks1ockli), Saturday, 30 December 2006 04:12 (seventeen years ago) link

Also Armond White: "We Are Marshall is good because it’s not propaganda; its regard of healing goes beyond 9/11 to the essence of American character. Listen at the way McConaghey urges a player to 'Head-slap the shit' out of an opponent. Beneath its Jock Uplift formula, We Are Marshall is sly, hard-core Americana."

Eric H. (Eric H.), Saturday, 30 December 2006 04:37 (seventeen years ago) link

speaking of documentary, i had some serious issues with Manufactured Landscapes, which i saw recently. in some ways i really loved it for what it showed, things i'd never seen before, portrayed artistically, capturing the scope/enormity of a landscape. however, though i know it was based on an art project, i thought it would go beyond that, be more political, be, well, wider in scope. i don't know, the photographs are pretty great in a sense but at the same time i feel a distinct lack in them. mostly because i think the photographer isn't all that empathetic to the 'human element'. and/or he's just not all that smart/intellectual?

anyway, i was supposed to watch little miss sunshine tonight and then i just ended up writing an article about my favourite shows of 2006 and now i don't know if i can go through with watching the movie. so maybe i will just keep listening to music and write something about manufactured landscapes.

i also want to see children of men.

28 Up
first one that I didn't find 100% compelling.

Nice coincidence, I watched that one last night too. I wanted to see John, the superprivileged super-snooty guy in that group of three, but he refused to show. He probably realized how badly he was coming across compared to the realer real lives of the others. I hope he shows up in 35-42-49.

Antonia's Line

It's pretty good, but all men are either rapists or stupid, harmless sods, and all women are full of genius, strength and purity of heart.

INLAND EMPIRE

Children of Men (generally wow)

Eric, what about Armond's crazy "Bush as America's coach" passage.

Also, while i'm always interested in Sicinski's take, dude gave Borat 3/10.

Dr M (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 30 December 2006 18:35 (seventeen years ago) link

okay i finally watched little miss sunshine - not so bad really, for a saturday early afternoon when it's snowing out. i really liked the cast and the volkswagon van (i grew up with an orange and white one and we drove it to california a few times, fair share of breakdowns, therefore: soft spot), but the script could've been waaay better written. could not deal with the music.

impermanent rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Saturday, 30 December 2006 19:33 (seventeen years ago) link

honestly the more i think about that movie the more i hate it

they seriously have to ban the "let your freak flag fly" awkward dance sequence indie movie climax scene

a mediocre black-and-white cookie in a cellophane wrapper (hanks1ockli), Saturday, 30 December 2006 20:39 (seventeen years ago) link

i'm trying not to think about it
xpost
it was a bit much in a way that it should've been way more

impermanent rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Saturday, 30 December 2006 20:43 (seventeen years ago) link

slytusk OTMFM - both in the growing hatred of LMS and the call for bannage of indie dance sequence trope.

Not For Use as Infant Nog (A-Ron Hubbard), Saturday, 30 December 2006 21:20 (seventeen years ago) link

Can we also ban the scene where a character uses literature in a facile way to explain the point of the movie? "See, like, Raskolnikov thought he didn't have to follow any rules. But he soon learned that sometimes society has taboos for a good reason."

Not For Use as Infant Nog (A-Ron Hubbard), Saturday, 30 December 2006 21:22 (seventeen years ago) link

again, bad writing is to blame, bad lazy uninspired writing :(

impermanent rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Saturday, 30 December 2006 21:24 (seventeen years ago) link

the van-pushing was great the first and second time around but then, y'know

impermanent rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Saturday, 30 December 2006 21:28 (seventeen years ago) link

Watched The Sacrifice last night. Despite the coolness of the scene with Anderson and the witch doing their floaty-spinny thing, it seemed nowhere near as hypnotic and effective as Stalker. Maybe next, folks here seem to like it.
