kissing, drinking, and insect songs (gbx), Monday, 26 March 2007 14:26 (seventeen years ago) link

your train had sleeper cars?!

yep. really really hard to sleep in the upper birth of one of those. i seem to remember they cost a lot of $$$ but work was paying for it so wtf did i care.

gordon gartrelle (chicago kevin), Monday, 26 March 2007 14:27 (seventeen years ago) link

omg the arm-waving

kissing, drinking, and insect songs (gbx), Monday, 26 March 2007 14:28 (seventeen years ago) link

Upper birth is the best, it's like being rocked to sleep in a cradle.

Ed (dali), Monday, 26 March 2007 14:29 (seventeen years ago) link

I've never been in a train with sleeper cars! jealous!

horseshoe (horseshoe), Monday, 26 March 2007 14:29 (seventeen years ago) link

upper birth = c-section???

kissing, drinking, and insect songs (gbx), Monday, 26 March 2007 14:30 (seventeen years ago) link

OMG THAT POLAR BEAR

Mr. Que (Party with me Punker), Monday, 26 March 2007 14:31 (seventeen years ago) link

if by "rocked to sleep in a cradle" you mean "shaken to death by an english nanny" then yes, i totally agree.

gordon gartrelle (chicago kevin), Monday, 26 March 2007 14:31 (seventeen years ago) link

ha, I think this is the difference between American trains and European trains.

guys my life is bullshit I've never been on a European train. :(

horseshoe (horseshoe), Monday, 26 March 2007 14:32 (seventeen years ago) link

birth = berth

damnit my head is squidgy today, I blame, not the beer (gadd's no.7 how easily you slip down), or the brandy, (oh how capacious my hipflask is) but the really really shit vietnamese and tub of hagendasz I pickup on the way home.

Ed (dali), Monday, 26 March 2007 14:32 (seventeen years ago) link

Superliner from Orlando to New orleans was pretty good.

Ed (dali), Monday, 26 March 2007 14:33 (seventeen years ago) link

I have an idea, if this place closes, shall we go back to greenspun?

Ed (dali), Monday, 26 March 2007 14:33 (seventeen years ago) link

MPLS to Glacier Nat'l Park = ACES

http://www.ilxor.com:8080/ILX/ThreadSelectedControllerServlet?boardid=56&threadid=1596#unread NOT ACES

kissing, drinking, and insect songs (gbx), Monday, 26 March 2007 14:35 (seventeen years ago) link

have any of you dc'ers rode the accela? when i went to nyc & boston a few months ago i was going to take the accela from ny to boston then fly home from logan but it turns out the train was like $120 more expensive than an american airlines flight from lga to bos.

crazings.

gordon gartrelle (chicago kevin), Monday, 26 March 2007 14:35 (seventeen years ago) link

I rode the Acela many moons ago, when it was apparently less ridiculously expensive than it is now. I liked it a lot.

horseshoe (horseshoe), Monday, 26 March 2007 14:36 (seventeen years ago) link

acela is crazy sweet

break machine (Brian Miller), Monday, 26 March 2007 14:37 (seventeen years ago) link

CHI to NYC on Amtrak = NOT ACES unless you'vegot nowhere to be for, like, 5 days

it was cool to be able to ride my bike to and from the train station at both ends, tho :D

kissing, drinking, and insect songs (gbx), Monday, 26 March 2007 14:37 (seventeen years ago) link

Acela is only marginally faster DC-NY, cuts a little more time off NY-Boston

break machine (Brian Miller), Monday, 26 March 2007 14:38 (seventeen years ago) link

the acela ticket cost only $20 more than the regular train, last night. i don't think acela has raised its prices recently at all, but the rest of the ne corridor trains have basically doubled or more in price.

gin and sonic (Allyzay Eisenschefter), Monday, 26 March 2007 14:40 (seventeen years ago) link

Evan, that seems like it wd be awesme with bikes and friends on the train. I've taken Amtrak NYC to Grand Rapids and it took like THIRTY-SIX HOURS which is RETARDED but I had a Pullman cabin to myself and nowhere else to be so it was kind of an adventure until we were stopped for hours waiting for freight traffic in Ohio somewhere. Except being alone was kind of a drag.

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 26 March 2007 14:41 (seventeen years ago) link

they just took delivery of those locomotives when i was still living back east but because of the condition/quality/age of the track it couldn't run at the higher speeds between boston and nyc.

i want a bullet train.

xpost- i think the reason my train ticket was going to be so expensive was because i was booking it at a relatively late date. but still, it was crazy expensive compared to my plane flight.

gordon gartrelle (chicago kevin), Monday, 26 March 2007 14:43 (seventeen years ago) link

I used to love taking Amtrak home to Buffalo for the summer from Providence in college, even though it took forever. gave me meditative time to prepare for shifting from college life to home life.

horseshoe (horseshoe), Monday, 26 March 2007 14:43 (seventeen years ago) link

oh it was fine, actually, because yeah i was with friends and bikes and wine. but it still wasn't a mode of transportation to take seriously you know?

kissing, drinking, and insect songs (gbx), Monday, 26 March 2007 14:43 (seventeen years ago) link

horseshoe is a noize dude????

kissing, drinking, and insect songs (gbx), Monday, 26 March 2007 14:44 (seventeen years ago) link

heh. I didn't grow up in PVD, though, just went to school there. I love it when those dudes talk about Rhode Island, though! I miss it.

kissing, drinking, and insect songs (gbx), Monday, 26 March 2007 14:45 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah, that was a really silly thing they required.
