before I finally give into that urge tho some dude can we perma-moratorium on the word "wigger"? it's an offensive word to use imo

xp no man it's not "stuff white people like" - there's something genuinely complex in why something like this gets the FUCK YOU, NOT FUNNY from whiney, something as I say earlier about performing identity & adopted subcultural/cultural spaces etc

"worse than dom" is a relative term because i love passantino too. y'all are cooler and funnier imo than a lot of nice people but i'm not going to act like you're NOT assholes on principle or anything.

some dude (Mr. Stevenson #2), Wednesday, 28 December 2011 21:44 (twelve years ago) link

I think we can all agree it's a stupid term but let's not make this thread about some dude

iatee, Wednesday, 28 December 2011 21:45 (twelve years ago) link

yeah i'm not going to defend throwing around that word because it's obviously pretty loaded (although i might argue just HOW offensive it is) but it's an undeniably useful word in shorthand for how people look at or discuss 'people like Bennett'

also the best white rapper i know put 'wigger' in an album title a while back and i felt like it was kind of good ballsy line in the sand to draw since most white rappers are SO afraid of being associated with that word and the Bennett-types who it usually is applied to (xpost)

i have seen mac lethal live and i can confirm that he is completely and totally awful fyi

i think it was Mac Lethal who I saw do a freestyle with the Konami code in it; which is kinda awesome when it comes from a "real rapper" and not one of the Penny Arcade nerdcore rappers

haha dude it has almost been statistically proven that you are the most aggressive and insulting poster (or at least the most frequently banned) in the history of this board. i don't wanna give up the olive branch so soon but c'mon you forfeited your victim card YEARS ago.

fyi this isn't called being an aggressive and insulting poster, it's called having a 'discernible posting style'

actually this is part of my beef with it - "people like Bennett" (all caveats apply here, Bennett's a caricature and when I think of "people like Bennett" I think more of 12-year-olds I used to know from Marshalltown, IA in the late 90s discovering Master P and feeling like the world he describes [in which they fervently believe] speaks more to them than the world of Marshall County) are sort of just the present historical iteration of 1) the desire of young people to possess recognizable cultural identities through which to relate to one another and 2) the need people have, and this is a more present-historical-moment part of it I think, to shed or modify or reshape their cultural identity/perceived-non-identity. beyond that it's just - if we wouldn't drop an n-bomb I think wigger is kinda sneaking it in through the back door & I wince when I hear it

there's something genuinely complex in why something like this gets the FUCK YOU, NOT FUNNY from whiney,

I can't speak for Whiney but I genuinely dislike sites like "Texts From Last Night" just because they're only funny in the context of these things actually happening, when it's clear that like 95% of the entries on the site are completely made up. It's the same reason why Adam Sandler movies are not funny, b/c we KNOW that Sandler paid an actor to dress up like fat Colonel Sanders, when in reality it would actually be funny if you saw that guy on the street. The humor on this site is exactly that, like yeah we know teenagers who really do speak like that, but they're never scatterbrained nor do they speak/text with so many "unintentional" punchlines, the whole thing is just insulting, making all the casual racism seem even worse - I don't think it's "genuinely complex", it's just another level of stupid

...or fold laundry? (J0n Arbuckle), Wednesday, 28 December 2011 22:02 (twelve years ago) link

which opens up a whole discussion about whether one can opt in to a culture or not, which I think is kind of the 25,000 question for a lot of young or formerly young white cats who got their lives changed by hip hop, and that's a complex question with some real beauty in the process of answering it, a beauty which kind of gets shit on by reducing things to "wigger" and HUSTLA DA RABBIT

yeah i don't disagree with this at all -- but i mean if the greatest crime of racial insensitivity anyone can accuse me of here is dropping the "w-bomb" then i can't help but laugh at the idea of regretting not saying w***er or winja instead.

some dude (Mr. Stevenson #2), Wednesday, 28 December 2011 22:08 (twelve years ago) link

xxxp it's only an issue when all the humor comes from whether or not that thing is authentic

unless you find "HUSTLA DA RABBIT" legitimately funny I would say the humor here mostly comes from "this guy is real, and he's an idiot"

its not that i dont agree with the verion in my head of where yr going w/ this but its all made immensely funny to by the fact that whiney thought the whole thing was sorta lol to start w/

i dont think its funny because its labored, more than any partic culture studies stuff, its just trying too hard and too blatantly

undervalued aerosmith tchotchkes sold in bulk, Wednesday, 28 December 2011 22:18 (twelve years ago) link

this is what i was talking about upthread, dude. just SAYING that is an implication that "good posting" is a) a real thing that is b) important and that c) you possess in greater quantities than him. whether this is true or not, it is so much more nagl than 'talking about ilx on other sites' or whatever elaborate social rules you've made up.

i may have engaged in an unhealthy degree of display name nitpicking at times but afaict i never really participated in any good poster/discernable posting styles so man please don't lump me for hanging with a rough crowd.

it should be noted that ilx went permanently downhill once the mods stopped letting us do polls to determine who is and who isn't good at posting
