Marvin Lewis icing kicker = INSTANT KARMA IN THE ASS when Cowher did the same thing on the Bungles GW attempt - and it worked!

So which NFL player is going to get arrested tonight for blowing off steam via alkyhaul/drogs/guns? I mean, end of regular season + New Year's Eve on the same night, somebody's going to have a blowout.

DOH for the Titans. Everything but the win.

"WHY the FUCK did Cincy blow one of their timeouts to ice the Pittsburgh kicker???? There's one minute left!!"

Marvin must be starting to huff the same stuff as his players.

The Bengals have had more success overall as a franchise, but like the Saints, they seem to have a history of pulling defeat out of the jaws of victory.

Considering everything, they did not deserve to go to the playoffs. They had a lot of key injuries to go with the off the field crap that led to some of their problems early on, but they still should have won 11 games.

Dallas Clark coming back for Indy is a pretty big thing. He played pretty good today, even with the big knee brace. For the Colts to have a chance in the playoffs, they are going to have to come out bombs away and try to get up a couple scores. If they can get up a bit, it will force teams to have to throw.

The evil Pats are lurking out there. I think they are kind of dark horse scary at this point, as their defense seems to have gelled and is much better than last year. If it ends up with NE and the Ravens for the AFC title game, I will be looking forward to baseball getting started. I will watch ANYONE but those two.

I think the Eagles might be the favorite now in the NFC, they definitely look like a more complete club right now. The Bears D is pretty average now and it doesn't matter who plays QB. Dallas, the Giants and Seattle are all pretty much a joke. I'd like to think that the Saints could get there, but they have been pretty ho hum since blasting the Cowboys in the last few weeks.

I've got a bad feeling it is going to end up with either NE or Baltimore winning it all and the thought of that makes me kind of sick.

I know they have Schottenheimer and everything, but I really like the Chargers' chances. I think they're easily the least flawed, least injured team in the AFC.

-- The PEW Research Center for Panty-Twisting (crump...), December 31st, 2006. (later)

not this week. saw the first td in the hotel bar, figured saints would dominate. ;_;

Tyrone Slothrop (Tyrone Slothrop), Monday, 1 January 2007 18:36 (seventeen years ago) link

It made sense for them to pull the starters and sandbag a bit, with no change in seeding at stake. Deuce was even inactive, for no medical reason. I don't want to get my hopes up too high, but they look good going into the playoffs. That first drive was a bit of "here's a little reminder how bad we're gonna fuck y'all" to the rest of the conference, and the rest of the game was determining bench strength.

The PEW Research Center for Panty-Twisting (Rock Hardy), Monday, 1 January 2007 18:46 (seventeen years ago) link

they certainly fucked carolina on that opening drive. it was great to watch from the airport bar in atlanta, roffle at sad-sack falcons fans.

Tyrone Slothrop (Tyrone Slothrop), Monday, 1 January 2007 19:00 (seventeen years ago) link

speaking of which, roffle at jim mora.

I hold out hope for a Saints/Chargers Superbowl.

That Darrent Williams shooting is a real shame and a saddening story.

forksclovetofu (forksclovetofu), Monday, 1 January 2007 19:27 (seventeen years ago) link

i stayed home on friday night to watch the insight bowl. I hope someone in the nfl is crazy/dumb enough to give Mike Leach a job.

i too am terrified that Baltimore could win the SB. i think they have the best shot right now, though the pats could deliver unto them a mighty rapin'. i dont think the pats are good enough to win the SB right now, but tell that to the Rams I guess. the fact that KC and the Jets are in the playoffs should temper any "nfc sux u r all fags" talk imo. i have a feeling that Seattle could get hot in the playoffs, they looked good against SD when they weren't giving the game away (tho they were at home).

Kansas City at Indianapolis (u herd me~)
Dallas at Seattle
N.Y. Jets at New England
N.Y. Giants at Philadelphia

aidsy (aidsy), Monday, 1 January 2007 19:30 (seventeen years ago) link

re: Philly, they didn't exactly beat the Redskins in a convincing manner, and if you can't beat the Redskins convincingly and you expect to be a playoff team...well...haha I guess that makes you the Colts but seriously they are in third place (one out of the 'Boys and they lose the tie breaker with the Giants) and play both of those teams on the road the next two weeks. It's basically batshit insane to think they'll win all three of their next three games (hahaha they'll definitely beat the Falcons though).

idk why but i really thought grossman would turn it around by the end of the season. lmbo @ me. anyway the defense is the real problem now :(

i'm thinking an eagles-pats or bears-pats rematch this year!

aidsy (aidsy), Monday, 1 January 2007 19:41 (seventeen years ago) link

i think the bears' D got sonned by rex's miscues and were worn out pretty early on, plus they got those injuries.

god i couldn't believe grossman last night. that fumble & that second INT esp. they should see if they can wheel and deal for matt schaub or something, he's gotta be better. or vinny testaverde maybe?

i guess that this "honor" should be called "the steamer wilson award" (after that dude on the bengals in 1989 who was found in his hotel shower offa his mind on coke & may have cost the bengals the SB that year).

I know they have Schottenheimer and everything, but I really like the Chargers' chances. I think they're easily the least flawed, least injured team in the AFC.

schottenheimer is a BIG obstacle -- "death, taxes, and no team coached by marty schottenheimer ever getting to the SB," and all that. i'm picking the ravens v. seahawks.

Eisbär (Eisbär), Monday, 1 January 2007 21:42 (seventeen years ago) link

actually, i just turned on the news and saw the story about darrent williams -- and i now want to revoke my "steamer wilson" comment. i didn't know about it when i wrote that post.

i feel shitty now :-(

(my predictions re schottenheimer, the ravens and the seahawks still stands tho')

Eisbär (Eisbär), Monday, 1 January 2007 22:44 (seventeen years ago) link

i am rooting for da jets in the "mangenius vs. team/coach voltron" rematch. even though i know that the jets are going nowhere fast during the playoffs.

and though i picked the seahawks to win the NFC, i also like the eagles' chances (even though i think that they'll lose it in the end).

Eisbär (Eisbär), Monday, 1 January 2007 22:48 (seventeen years ago) link

Picks for this week: home teams/favorites all the way. But just to rank upsets in order of likelihood, I'll say Giants - Chiefs - Cowboys - Jets.

LOL @ Mora Sr. being drilled on the coaching changes today on NFLN. Also LOL @ other commentators repeatedly suggesting that Falcons should consider Mariucci, way to have respect for yr fellow broadcaster dudes. "Your son sucks! I watched the end of the Cincy game with the sound off and a bottle of wine but WTF at the end of the game: (hazy sequence of events)

Cincy gets big play to put themselves in field goal range with less than a minute left

They race down the field and spike the ball to stop the clock

They can't the next play off in time so call a timeout

They then kneel down two times in a row

Miss field goal

lol

Here, I will recap last night for you.

Eisen: Hi, I'm Rich Eisen! I'm too good to be here today, so I'm gonna leave you with Schefter.
Schefter: Hi, I'm Adam Schefter! With me tonight are Jamie and Marshall. Guys, what do you think about the 2007 NFL season?
Marshall: Basically, it was terrible. The Carolina Panthers can really go straight to hell, I lost my pool because of them.
Jamie: I agree wholeheartedly with Marshall on this one, the Panthers are a terrible team.
Schefter: Ah but guys, you are forgetting something when you say 2007 was terrible!!
(CUT TO DENNY GREEN SPEECH)
Everyone: LOL LOL LOL LOL OMG WTF LOLLL
Schefter: I can watch that until 2008, and I think we might very well start that goal up tonight. Anyway, those of you at home might notice that Mooch is not with us tonight either. That is because he is auditioning for the head coaching job in Atlanta, amirite!?
EVERYONE: LOL OLOLLOLOLOL ROFFLES
Mora Sr: (glowers in corner, hordes the precious)
Schefter: Oh hey guys, remember this!!!
(DENNY GREEN AGAIN)
Everyone: LOL Maybe he can coach the Falcons!! LOL
Jamie: Hey Mora, do you think 3 years is long enough for a coach to really be given a chance in a system?
Mora sr: Well, it depends on the team and the coach and the schedule and the moon and whether or not ILX is up and what kind of cheese I like best that day, but in general I'd say no, you need at least 6 years, I mean look at Cowher.
Jamie: That doesn't make much sense, also you were someone advocating benching Vick, doesn't he deserve 6 years.
Mora Sr: No.
Jamie: Ok well what do you think about Mooch sonning your son in a Falcons beef LOL
Mora Sr: (HEAD EXPLODES)
Schefter: Well that was very interesting, thanks Jamie and Coach. Hey, guys, wanna watch Denny Green again? I can watch that forever.

(etc)

Also that Blondie Girl who gives updates on the half hour on goings on around the league, because Schefter is apparently above that now, appeared to be completely high while doing the bowl updates. I mean, she couldn't even spew out a sentence and kept giggling and kind of bowling over whenever they cut to her. It was bizarrrrrre.

okay, cable just came back up! and this woman of whom you speak is on right now. I think the thing is her voice is really weird--like it sounds like she's constantly repressing a giggle, and her pitch varies wildly. I'd never seen her before.

I watched Mora's "I got fired" press conference and I feel bad for him, too. I admittedly have not followed the Falcons super-closely, but it seems like he was getting the job done.

horseshoe (horseshoe), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 19:44 (seventeen years ago) link

Mora didn't really seem like the most professional dude ever though. I mean, he got decent results, but he's a bit of a knucklehead.

Michael (Oakland Mike), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 19:46 (seventeen years ago) link

well... he wasn't really, but he's a nice guy from what i can tell. i always liked him personally, tho he may not be HC material. he probably could've kept his job if he'd fired one of his coordinators, or not fucked himself in the ass on national radio. or beaten cleveland and/or detroit.
