Ruffalo and Gosling are both very motherable.

honestly, the way i see "nonthreatening" trotted out most frequently is to sneeringly describe boys 12 year old girls might be attracted to, like leonardo dicaprio back in the day. that's the reason it annoys me, that it seems like it's ultimately sneering at 12 year old girls for...liking boys? liking insufficiently masculine boys, as judged by adult straight men? it seems like a weird description of ruffalo on those terms. it's annoying no matter what.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 27 December 2011 05:55 (twelve years ago) link

mark ruffalo seems slightly melancholic, which i love, and which i am thinking maybe horseshoe does too.

everyone, male and female, should look threatening imo. keeps you on your toes.

i've said before that photographs are only a tiny part of the story with ruff which is why his attractiveness varies from role to role, because he is a v physical actor and it is often about how he moves. or rather how his movement often suggests a certain tactility, hes weirdly physically present in a lot of his movies. its really jarring in a movie like 13 going on 30 which is very kinetic and cartoonish. i think a few people including myself have previously mentioned that he's almost uncomfortable in that movie. which makes calling him "nonthreatening" seem especially weird. i mean he's not "threatening" either (but then i think it would be creepy if any actors mere presence on the screen were inherently menacing - i think this kindof thinking has all sorts of connotations - like the weird rape fantasy notion that gay men only like the type of guys that bullied them in school etc, etc) i feel like there would be a strong overlap between people who like ruffalo and brando because early brando does the same thing (not that i'm trying to conflate the achievements of early brando with mark ruffalo) but there is that thing where he often feels like an actual person up on the screen surrounded by a movie.

i like david thomson's take on gosling

" Gosling said he felt influenced by the work of James Dean and Gene Wilder, both of whom had an unusual romantic tenderness and a vulnerability that refused to take comfort or cover behind a facade of male self-assurance."

but this thread isn't really about ryan gosling or how nonthreatening ilxor type dudes find mark ruffalo.

judith, Tuesday, 27 December 2011 11:36 (twelve years ago) link

I always thought that "nonthreatening" was kind of code for "not sexual" bcuz lots of ppl are v v uncomfortable with the idea of 12, 13 y.o. girls having actual sexual desires. There's this real kind of paternalism behind it. Or maybe cleaning up to make acceptable to mothers of teenage girls? (this one is hard bcuz obv I have been a randy 12 y.o. girl but never been the mother of one or placed in the role of being forced to be guardian of any young girls' morality/purity/other bs terms etc.)

It's kind of the progression of Duran Duran from the Planet Earth + Girls On Film videos (overtly sexual) to Is There Something I Should Know where they were styled to be unsexual and therefore nonthreatening. The irony being, most teengirls I knew preferred them in the sexual incarnation.

Still don't get Ruffalo but we've already established my taste in lust objects = weird.

i'm p patchy w/early brando but this is def otm re: his gentler, picking-up-gloves side, & v true of ruffalo

nonthreatening almost reads, & yeah semi-offensively, as not-eligible, to me, like it's someone 'limp' enough to exist outside the realm of perceived mates. marriageables.

There is no sneering involved. And I am hardly calling for the upholding of masculinity - I picked arguably the most feminine dude in the thread as arguably its most attractive, which is unsurprising for me. Rather, I'm saying something not unlike what you said yourself in other words - "boys 12 year old girls might be attracted to." Another way to put it might be "boys who are not adults," the role that of course made Ruffalo. Like I said, flip the genders and I could be pointing at men afraid of "strong women" (or, on your terms, "girls 12 year old boys might be attracted to"); I just think some women do it too. And again, I'm not saying that this is the only element of Ruffalo's (or Gosling's) attractive potential, but I think it may well be there for some or many women.

And again, the "threat" I'm referring to has nothing to do with physical or any other sort of violence or "menace," so I don't know why people keep talking about this.

I also don't think there's anything wrong with being attracted to this type. I'm just trying to identify what makes him attractive, because I don't find him so, especially.

That might be the case if we were talking about Robert Pattinson, say. Mark Ruffalo is 44 years old and quite obviously a sex object.

I suppose Ruffalo is pretty down-to-earth/relatable-seeming, which I find attractive in girls. It may be that I find your suaver (more peacockish?) male actors more attractive because the(y're more entertaining and) better to fantasize about being, all the way back to at least Bogart/Grant (the latter with a sense of humor about it, which Clooney has borrowed in copious quantities).

Wouldn't it be great if just for once, when several ppl tell someone "this word or usage is problematic due to x..." if they actually just said "oops I didn't realise!" and tried to find a better word. Instead of spending loads of time detailing why, exactly, they didn't mean *problematic word* in a ~problematic~ way bcuz they, a dude, have redefined language or something.

But y'know, whatever.

Yes physician heal thyself.

It's weird bcuz I can look at those pics Judith posted and think he actually looks quite handsome but that just doesn't translate to wanting to put him near my genitals. Desire is complicated. I think maybe he's too perfect looking, all those teeth and that immaculately mussed hair. Perhaps if he were more asymmetrical or ginger or had British teeth I'd fancy him more (at all)
