run through him, you mean? okay, well, he's also a good spot-up midrange shooter. and he has post moves; he just hid them last year.

bosh's goal is to average 10 rebounds this year. that's possible, given his statistics from toranto. if he does that, he'll be great. and sitting at the elbow, shooting midrange shots is okay for him, and is a good "fit." (a'mare, who is amazing but crowds the paint, might have presented his own "fitness" issues alongside bron and wade). and if bosh becomes more assertive in the paint, he'll be an even better fit.

No, it's a good fit for kurt thomas, not an elite offensive player like Bosh once was.

Matt Armstrong, Monday, 26 December 2011 03:07 (twelve years ago) link

the big 3 fit and they don't fit -- it's certainly not a classic pairing like the celtics big 3 or like deron/dwight/dirk would be -- but the heat's big 3 can also do a lot of things on both the offensive and defensive (this is a huge thing) ends that no team or trio of players in the nba can do -- i still think that talent will win out and that it really won't matter if they fit classically, and if things go anywhere near as well as they went on day 1 of year 2, they may obliterate the entire notion of fit anyway

and i think you could make the argument that lebron is truly one of the most versatile, or potentially versatile, players in the history of the nba, and that maybe the best team for him is one that is amorphous and experimental, provided that he's willing to push himself to expand his offensive repertoire -- he seemed like he was on his way today

if you did 100 random groupings of 3 top 25 players who didn't play the same position, I venture to say that a majority of the time they'd fit better than Miami's big 3 does.

nash -- cp3 -- deron

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 26 December 2011 03:25 (twelve years ago) link

that's possible, but it would be a pretty worthless experiment

JUST KIDDING

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 26 December 2011 03:27 (twelve years ago) link

i mean it's not like the heat got to choose any 3 of the nba's top 25 players and choose three guys that don't fit perfectly

i mean you could say the same thing for literally every single team in the nba

How many days after a period? Started by Tuomas in December 2011 (v-shasty), Monday, 26 December 2011 03:28 (twelve years ago) link

interestingly, i rarely see bosh identified as the "bad fit." i always see bosh/lebron's redundant game identified as the issue.

No, see, this isn't the case at all! GMs have the freedom to put together players who fit from a talent perspective. The Heat didn't do that because the Superfriends were a package deal.

Matt Armstrong, Monday, 26 December 2011 03:29 (twelve years ago) link

there's no basketball reason why miami's big three shouldn't work--it's all about flexibility and expansion of roles and being willing to work outside what you did when you were the guy on your team. i guess lebron was in the post today? good for him. he should have done that years ago.

cad, Monday, 26 December 2011 03:29 (twelve years ago) link

bosh is fine -- he's a good fit in that he shouldn't be the number 1 option on a team and is overqualified as the number 3 -- and he helps the heat space the floor

bosh is prob a bad fit in that a distributing/defending point guard or dominant defense/rebounding center would be much more useful than jump shooting pf.

cad, Monday, 26 December 2011 03:31 (twelve years ago) link

i mean brandon bass would also help the heat space the floor.

this is pretty stupid, matt -- GMs have the freedom to put together players, but with some restrictions -- i.e. no GM will get to add derrick rose, who is one of the top 25 players in the nba -- or dirk nowitzki -- and so on and so forth

and in any event the superfriends are at worst the second best team in the nba, so i don't think it's a big deal

How many days after a period? Started by Tuomas in December 2011 (v-shasty), Monday, 26 December 2011 03:32 (twelve years ago) link

ideally you'd want bosh to be better on defense and as a rebounder, but he's not exactly dirk in that regard, either

he's not an elite floor spacer though. 45% from 16-23 is good, but it ain't great. and obviously that's the furthest extent of his floor spacing.

Imagine how much better they'd be with Kevin Love instead of Bosh. That would be a fit.

i think cole will fill the first role. and yes, a dominant center would be better, but that wasn't an option. it's why i have high hopes for either curry or pittman. if either work out (and i really think curry will), then bosh fits in very well imo.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 26 December 2011 03:33 (twelve years ago) link

But they can find players who "fit." Terry/Kidd fit together. Nash and Stoudemire were a perfect fit. GMs put them together.

Matt Armstrong, Monday, 26 December 2011 03:34 (twelve years ago) link

you can't say that teams across the leagues are as poorly assembled from a fit perspective-- plenty of teams aren't. They just don't have the talent level in their star players that the Heat has.

Matt Armstrong, Monday, 26 December 2011 03:35 (twelve years ago) link

right, but that's a perfectly fine balance?

How many days after a period? Started by Tuomas in December 2011 (v-shasty), Monday, 26 December 2011 03:36 (twelve years ago) link

lol which teams are actually "well-assembled" in that their three best players compliment each other perfectly or close to it?

cad, Monday, 26 December 2011 03:36 (twelve years ago) link

i mean saying kevin love would be a better fit is potentially true, but it's also a total fantasy that never could've happened, so it's kind of stupid to argue about

How many days after a period? Started by Tuomas in December 2011 (v-shasty), Monday, 26 December 2011 03:36 (twelve years ago) link

also nash & stoudemire were a good fit offensively, but that team never made it to the finals in large part cuz neither of those two guys could guard a barstool

but they don't have to be perfect complements. They just have to fit together better than the heat's trio, which is a low standard to meet.

after the 09-10 season the Wolves front office had a film session and concluded that the only player who looked like an nba starter to them was Darko.

dude, Kahn hated Love. He thought Love was really overrated. Love began the 10-11 season struggling to get more than 30 minutes. Everything changed with the 30-30 game.

Matt Armstrong, Monday, 26 December 2011 03:47 (twelve years ago) link

anyway i think you could easily make the argument that the leauge is wide open for the heat this year -- the bulls should give them a tough test, but i don't see any team in the west beating them -- the heat are a terrible match up for okc, imo

the mavs are punting this year, the lakers don't have a shot. clippers will be good, but not good enough. idk. if the bulls can't manage to beat the heat i think they might walk to the title.
