(i don't like the ending of WOTW either, but mostly cuz it's T.C.)

Dr M (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 26 December 2006 16:51 (seventeen years ago) link

i'm not gonna argue too much about spielberg because the guy's got skills and has made some excellent films, he just doesn't quite respect the audience enough to end his (recent) films without spelling everything out.

i know, i know, the rat. but i'd rather have an obvious joke than obvious sentiment.

bohren un der club of gear (bohren un der club of gear), Tuesday, 26 December 2006 17:03 (seventeen years ago) link

i really love wotw and munich and schindler's list and much of saving private ryan, but i always imagine how much better they'd have been with better endings (esp. the first two, schindler's couldn't have been too much better and spr had more probs than the ending).

bohren un der club of gear (bohren un der club of gear), Tuesday, 26 December 2006 17:05 (seventeen years ago) link

I find myself lately much less willing to completely write off movies and much more willing to enjoy them in spite of their flaws. If I had seen WOTW a few years earlier I probably would have been more dismissive, and same for Little Children, really.

okay, i finally finished watching a history of violence. very cool. but you all knew that already.

Some movies' flaws are why they are bad movies. Others have flaws that make them more interesting.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 27 December 2006 02:35 (seventeen years ago) link

Children of Men - awesome awesome awesome, go see now. Throw in the bored Russian girl from The Good Thief and Sophie Okonedo and this would be the best cast ever.

Movies not included in the slightest in Spielberg montage on Kennedy Center Honors (a montage that found room for Hook, Amistad and The Sugarland Express) included most prominently A.I., Munich and War of the Worlds. Of course, it pretty much ended with Saving Private Ryan, chronologically speaking.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 27 December 2006 03:44 (seventeen years ago) link

Of course, that processional of vets pretty much proved the program directors are clueless at putting together tributes that don't involve musicians.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 27 December 2006 03:47 (seventeen years ago) link

Ew, John Williams was Kennedy Center honored before Spielberg?

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 27 December 2006 03:50 (seventeen years ago) link

Spielberg is a decent whoman being.

are you liveblogging it or something?

bad santa (still awesome)
i heart huckabees (some roffles, but fairly pointless)

...does LED ZEPPELIN DVD count as cinema??

Aguire, Wrath of God - I loved it, I loved that it was so bleak and yet had these weirdly hilarious moments ("long arrows are becoming the fashion").

The Unknown - I got waybaked and watched this fucking CREEPY silent 1927 Lon Chaney movie the other night while playing banjo in an empty house with all the lights off, good times.

re: Spielberg, I also watched ET the other day, which was way better than I remembered it, but there was that one scene where they photoshopped walkie-talkies into guys' hands in place of guns, and it was like, wtf.

Spielberg montage on Kennedy Center Honors

Goddammit, I saw this was on but had to watch Coup de Torchon before it went back to the library. So no songs for Steve?

didn't like de niro's direction, the film is visually very bland, could've used some editing, damon and angelina don't really appear to age at all which is very distracting, the plot was tedious

shakey mo jopotatoes (bundgee), Wednesday, 27 December 2006 18:19 (seventeen years ago) link

I will rep for The Good Shepherd, as I am a fan of the slow burn & lowkey spy shenanigans & Michael Gambon.

I'm guessing I'll be the only one.

Sorry mark, I don't mean to be a dick, but i'm just using as a model pothead friend who likes ANYTHING stoned. I've also never known any weedies who are more interesting when hiii.

The Good Shepherd is terrible. Lone shining moment is a flash of crazy/wild Angelina (circa Hackers/Girl, Interrupted) before she becomes unhappy '50s housewife #3,987,640.

Anyone else keep expecting every male cast-member to come out of the closet?

milo (milo), Wednesday, 27 December 2006 22:01 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, I was hoping that it was deliberate but I can't figure out what purpose it would serve.

and morbs i definitely don't watch everything stoned, rarely as a matter of fact (& i tend to be MORE critical when i do)... but i don't think there's any "neutral" state you need to be in to appreciate any art.

taladega nights was AWFUL. i have now seen that movie three fucking times (only once by choice), and not even my family, who loves everything "funny" (on xmas eve they sat me down to show me their new fave xmas movie -- xmas with the cranks or whatever the fuck it's called), liked it. the gay southern dude who played the country club waiter on arrested development who is on the crew and whispers is wonderful, though.

saw chronicles of narnia -- great. saw inside man again -- all the parts that are about nyc (conversations b/w cops, translating the wiretap, etc) are great, the heist stuff only soso. saw kiss kiss bang bang -- no. i'm not willing to cede any possibility of cleverness to "la culture," at least not in that vernacular. saw children of men tonight -- so so so fucking good. the best made movie i have seen in a very long time. it was bizarrely such a director's statement. and clive owen is so goddamned good that i'm almost ready to forgive him for i'll sleep when i'm dead. also got an hdtv and an hd dvd player that came with king kong so the good hour and a half of that, too. dude who plays the vain movie star who's the coach on friday night lights is awesome. let's get him more work.

Hostel was DULL and kind of sexist, Cabin Fever was WAY BETTER. Also didn't see Miike cameo. :(

NOW FOR STARSHIP TROOPERS. YESSSSS.

Jessie the Monster (scarymonster), Thursday, 28 December 2006 01:54 (seventeen years ago) link

Hostel wasn't even good torture-porn. It spends too much time as National Lampoon's Amsterdam Vacation before it gets to the cutting.

milo (milo), Thursday, 28 December 2006 02:31 (seventeen years ago) link

^^^ OTM

Also the fact that the decent-ish guy dies FIRST so we are expected to root for the sexist douchebag frat boy??

And you know, if ONE of the female characters hadn't been an unrealistically hot sex object that spent most of her time naked and/or screaming, that would have been cool too.

The Wild Blue Yonder
Herzog's "science fiction fantasy" starring Brad "Raymond" Dourif
Treadwellesque ranting from Dourif, ace mathmatician fu, NASA thigh show, SCUBA ice caves, return to the Mists of Amazon. And the music is amazing. Could be seen as final chapter in a trilogy of Fata Morgana and Lessons of Darkness.

sexyDancer (sexyDancer), Thursday, 28 December 2006 15:27 (seventeen years ago) link

I watched that yesterday! I fucking LOVED it, the music especially (I will pay many $$$ for the OST if necessary), as well as Brad Dourif's angry alien shtick, also I crave zero-gravity now in a bad way.

I personally loved Hostel, but probably would've enjoyed it more if I hadn't known going in A) who Eli Roth is, and B) what kind of movies he makes, ie had just assumed it was National Lampoons Amsterdam Vacation and not known it was eventually to become screaming maiming cannibalism fun-time hour.

has been plagued with problems since its erection in 1978 (nklshs), Thursday, 28 December 2006 16:51 (seventeen years ago) link

Starship Troopers = STILL AWESOME.

Next: Pirates of Caribbean 2 with fam, Barton Fink, Dog Soldiers

Yeah, going in expecting SUPER HORROR FUN TIME did detract from Hostel, but my main problems were totally unrelated to that (BORING, kind of offensive to my vagina, etc.). Also Cabin Fever was major lulz and this was not funny at all???
