babyshit tofu followed by ice cream of indeterminate fruit flavor. not durian but that would have at least had some once-in-a-lifetime cachet. this was just...ice cream you don't want to have.

i was thinking of posting a picture of a cicada (since we heard them every time we walked under a tree but never saw any) except GROSS they are disgusting and yes, we did see one: that is what crept into the hotel room in the middle of the night. YUCK YUCK YUCK YUCK YUCK FOREVER AND EVER

how bad was customs?

amon, Thursday, 10 July 2008 17:38 (fifteen years ago) link

china's was fine, it was canada that fucked me like usual. ever since i got strip-searched and rejected at the quebec border in 2000 i've been on their equivalent of a no-fly list or something. in vancouver i ended up in the secondary customs/immigration line. the place was some kind of sad 21st century ellis island. what a beleagured batch of humanity: the saudi trader under immediate suspicion, the mexicans who had never left mexico, happening to take a vacation in BC, arab families, overseas chinese with no english, their child speaking for them. i overheard some shit, security to security "Where you have him now?" "He's in the fishbowl" i mean wtf canada i hate u most when you seem like the usa. my wait in line was nearly two hours, just standing there, jetlagged, knowing i'd done nothing wrong. fuck you canada i won't go back you fucking dicks.

cicadas are banhammered

haha no we have our very own airport here. it's just how the tickets worked out that j. flew sea > b.c. > shanghai, whereas i flew sea > tokyo > shanghai. my experience w/ immigration was not so awful as his, proving that sometimes canada is more american than than america is.

i talked to serenity today. until a few weeks ago her parents lived on a golf course in a gated community in far pudong out to the east.

i guess their new building is all chinese, except for them, and close-in.

she actually said "when i get to the airport i'm so happy to see a white person." um ok. all the white people in line were totally fucking annoying except for the one cute canadian. i liked the chinese more!

jergins, Friday, 11 July 2008 23:19 (fifteen years ago) link

that's pretty uhh. not only the white people in line but every where else too, pretty much. the blacks in china seemed okay, though.

"And finally, there’s the stinky tofu. Wafting down every alley and byway in Taipei is the unmistakable and often appalling odor of this unusual food. The grilled sausages and squid, with their smoke and flame, are the most visible street food in Taipei, but they are not the most aromatic.

The effect of stinky tofu on Westerners is a universal wrinkling of the nose, such as a Chinese person might feel after stumbling into a cheese factory. Summoning up some courage, I ate a piece of stinky tofu, albeit well-smothered in soy, vinegar, garlic and chili sauce. It has a sharp flavour, not at all similar to the smell. And how does it taste? You won’t know until you give it a try." so says travelintelligence.com
