> 17. PHAEDRA - The Sea

^ this beautiful thing really came into its own in the autumn - good shout Lex! Also great to see Frivolous getting more love.

los krampusinos! (pomplamau5), Thursday, 22 December 2011 15:34 (twelve years ago) link

so my day off tmrw will be spent copy/pasting lex's trax list into youtube. Cool! Thx Lex :) Sure beats xmas shopping.

pandemic, Thursday, 22 December 2011 15:35 (twelve years ago) link

yeah i didn't think the phaedra album was a contender and then bam, autumn happened

i actually started a youtube playlist including both album standout tracks and standalone tracks but it was taking aaaaages and i got bored http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL65FDD501BC4A3CA8

Tom Waits??

uh oh...

dog latin, but cool (dog latin), Thursday, 22 December 2011 16:16 (twelve years ago) link

thx BW - i like jhené but as i was putting the lists together i kinda realised i don't love her yet? i did not feel compelled to return to her music as much as i expected to. if i wanted to be a bit mean i'd say i preferred cassie the first time round and w/o the slight drake taint.

^^^ + no kandi either?

bayou goo, Thursday, 22 December 2011 16:36 (twelve years ago) link

jaymx use ur xls! i am not explaining my love of tom waits for the 93085034th time in my years in ilx.

re: this album specifically - i'd actually given up on him, he seemed to finally lurch into self-parody about a decade ago, but i like the casualness of the affair - it's tom happily doing what tom does w/o trying too hard about it but enjoying himself and getting some good shots at the outside world in, and several moments of resonant emotional truth

degas-dirty monet (lex pretend), Thursday, 22 December 2011 16:37 (twelve years ago) link

kandi = 2010 even if i didn't hear it til 2011 and thus never got to rep for it in any EOY list ;_;

degas-dirty monet (lex pretend), Thursday, 22 December 2011 16:37 (twelve years ago) link

I've had the same disinterest in Waits for years, and this album broke through for the same reasons.

Susan Boyle????

skip, Thursday, 22 December 2011 17:07 (twelve years ago) link

Didn't really want to start a new thread for this, but last night I picked up some 2011 albums based on praise from various ilxors in their personal year-end wrap-ups.

So, Ned and Adrien, I am holding each of you personally responsible if the Active Child and Cold Cave albums, respectively, suck. ;)

In all seriousness, the write ups you guys did for those two inspired me to pick up on some stuff I skipped over this past year.

I don't know whether I'm lolling more about Jeff Bridges being their third best rock record of the year or them having a Slowcore chart in 2011

los krampusinos! (pomplamau5), Thursday, 22 December 2011 20:29 (twelve years ago) link

Whiney, you have some nice picks in there. Out of the ones I don't know, Shinji Masuko sounds pretty interesting.

thanx for the list dealwithit.gif. have heard just over half of the stuff you listed with 'summvs' and 'owl splinters' being partic standouts to me

i tried listening to the 'garden of the forking paths' record but it was too much for me tbh

є(٥_ ٥)э, Thursday, 22 December 2011 20:41 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, owl splinters is a huge standout for the year. what a cool record

Excellent lists obv!

Tim F, Thursday, 22 December 2011 23:14 (twelve years ago) link

ha, I doubt it will be redundant. I'm still waiting for someone to tell me which Denyque track is best

I loved Garden Of Forking Ways when I first heard it but I've developed tinnitus since and can't go near it now. Good list though.

juno's singles list is interesting and good.

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 23 December 2011 21:09 (twelve years ago) link

really special tracks dot this list, like those from cosmin-TRG; factory-floor; ital; and auntie flo.

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 23 December 2011 21:37 (twelve years ago) link

Phew! Just now finished listening to all the tracks in Lex's Top 120 that I hadn't previously heard (shamefully enough this was about 80 of 'em)

Lots and lots of good stuff as to be expected, but I especially loved Vibe Kartel 'Colouring Book', Aisha Davis 'My Loving', Tiffany Evans 'Won't Find Me' and Lloyd 'Private Dancer' which reminded me very much of Scritti Politti for some reason.

The track that absolutely blew me away however, and ensured that I had a smile on my face for all of yesterday afternoon, was the fantastic Cherry V 'I'm In Love'

Thx for the tunes Lex!

i've never heard wu lyf, but i do know that yuck and girls are among the worst music i've heard, like, ever

― degas-dirty monet (lex pretend), Thursday, December 15, 2011 5:43 AM (1 week ago) Bookmark Permalink

Lex, you're a critic whom I love reading more than most - due mainly because you open my ears to pop-r&b (pathetic as it may be to rely on criticism to listen to pop-music) - but if you think Girls and Yuck is some of the worst music you've ever heard, then please remove the shit from your ears. Give me a break with the hyperbole; these are at least competent ripoffs of their antecedents!
