l,

that is kind of a good point.
shake shack has a whole Serious Fast Food Restaurant vibe going on
in and out is just there
on the other hand shake shack has good frozen custard
in and out has acceptable milkshakes
love-love

in-n-out is more concerned w/ your spiritual welfare at the end of the day

I've never heard of Shake Shack so I voted for it

Nothing as good as In-N-Out here in east coast US unfortunately, but I live a 2-minute walk to Five Guys (free peanuts!) and also Checkers which is walk-up or drive-thru only, rare around here. BGR: The Burger Joint is also quite good.

five guys has free peanuts? I should check it out

iatee, Wednesday, 21 December 2011 18:56 (twelve years ago) link

neither of these exist where I live. never even heard of shake shack!

I have been to I-n-O tho and it's pretty great. Never been to 5 Guys. Is it worth it?

Yeah, it's pretty good. I like it. It's like... i want to say that none of these newfangled chains are a helluvalot better than Wendy's, if you imagine Wendy's as a new thing with a slightly different burger flavor.

There's a 5 Guys in Medford

remy bean in exile, Wednesday, 21 December 2011 19:03 (twelve years ago) link

Reading your first post I was about to ask you where I'd find one so ty!

ᶘ ᵒᴥᵒᶅ (~curious orange~), Wednesday, 21 December 2011 19:04 (twelve years ago) link

I wouldn't go out of your way for one, but it's a good eat if you're nearby one. A huge choice of toppings, prices competitive with the fast-food giants (despite their name, the "little" burgers are about the size of a McD's 1/4 Pounder). The fries are too greasy for my tastes although everyone else seems to like them.

Everything else is secondary, Wednesday, 21 December 2011 19:06 (twelve years ago) link

5 guys is ok but makes heavier grosser burgers than either in n out or shake shack.

cad, Wednesday, 21 December 2011 19:08 (twelve years ago) link

tbh I'm mostly interested in the fry aspect since I don't eat meat. I-n-O lets you order the burgers with everything but which makes them pretty awesome imo but it's also delicious even with just that.

I really dig fast food burgers. This isn't meant to be a a challopsy opinion, but In the pantheon of burgers I feel there are no totally distinct outstanding winners. There are maybe three circles of fast food burgers: acceptable, good, and very good.

Fatburger, Shake Shack, White Castle, Five Guys, Wendys, are all in my top tier but I wouldn't go to the mat for either of them.

why will burger chains never do a veggie patty

thompp, Wednesday, 21 December 2011 19:13 (twelve years ago) link

okay because they'd need to install a separate grill never mind

thompp, Wednesday, 21 December 2011 19:14 (twelve years ago) link

in n out fries are pretty bad, 5 guys fries are quite good.

cad, Wednesday, 21 December 2011 19:14 (twelve years ago) link

otoh i don't care, just fry that shit with the real person burgers and i'll take my lumps

thompp, Wednesday, 21 December 2011 19:14 (twelve years ago) link

I don't give a shit about whether or not they use the same grill tbh. I know enough about restaurant food to know that most things you think are "veg" have probably been "tainted" in some way. I would welcome a veggie patty grilled right along side all the meat ones but you're right that most don't. Burger King does but not all locations offer it. It's actually pretty good too.

ᶘ ᵒᴥᵒᶅ (~curious orange~), Wednesday, 21 December 2011 19:15 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, I think that was my verdict a while back - In 'n Out has the better burger, and Five Guys has better fries. But that peanut oil on the latter can be a little much, and you can really taste the potato if you order your In 'n Out fries "light."

i don't know shake shack. in n out is good, overrated, sure, but still awesome. when i'm home in LA i go here instead of in n out.

btw in n out's popularity out in socal is so insane now. when I was growing up people knew about it but it wasn't a destination thing. their efficiency is pretty fuckin scary, I went on saturday night and the car line was almost out to the street but it just zipped right along and the chow was still A+

kinda blame big liebowski for the in-n-out thing. there is a whole generation fo kids raised on in-n-out as a Thing, now, and like a destination spot.

remy bean in exile, Wednesday, 21 December 2011 19:35 (twelve years ago) link

what, no way, it preexisted that

iatee, Wednesday, 21 December 2011 19:36 (twelve years ago) link

I would dig a 24-hour in-n-out. la people, are there any in la?

If memory serves the big INO in Las Vegas is 24 hours, but none in LA.

Best INO burger ever is the one next to LAX after a long flight.

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 21 December 2011 21:26 (twelve years ago) link

In-n-out is a shitty burger, but I can't vote because I've never had Shake Shack

milo z, Wednesday, 21 December 2011 21:55 (twelve years ago) link

q: what is a good (fast food) burger? to me it is good beefy taste with enough fat and not too compressed, and a toasted roll w/ decent not mealy tomatoes for a side.

ooohhh I hate mealy tomatoes

idk chick-fil-a in hollywood was pretty damned crowded when i went a few months ago. i think curious natives plus homesick transplants would mean a pretty brisk business at least at first

monomaniatee (t. silaviver), Wednesday, 21 December 2011 22:01 (twelve years ago) link

you can only really be homesick for shake shack if you moved to la pretty recently! but yeah I don't think it would go out of business or anything, but it wouldn't be ****an event**** in the same way.

iatee, Wednesday, 21 December 2011 22:34 (twelve years ago) link

nyc goes nuts over any chain restaurant that they don't have already, i.e. potbelly.

bene_gesserit, Wednesday, 21 December 2011 22:41 (twelve years ago) link

Voted Shake Shack: Have never been to In-n-Out and am vegetarian

edb, Wednesday, 21 December 2011 23:28 (twelve years ago) link

of these, only been to the shake shack (had a milkshake in NYC and a burger & fries in DC) but voted in-n-out

I like Nifty-Fifty's but when it comes to Del-Val local places I will forever rep for The Charcoal Pit

best bet for the aforementioned LAX in-n-out location is to take some time to hang outside and watch the plans fly in about 100 ft overhead. the burgers at in-n-out are great (also: pie and burger in pasadena has virtually the same burger and might be a little better, but it's not fast food, really) i used to like fatburger but i lost the taste for it. the umami burger fellas are in the process of trying to do a counter service type of chain for their brand, which will be interesting to see (though umami is also overrated, moreso than in-n-out.)

i voted shake shack even though i haven't had it in like 5 years. in-n-out is good, but shake shack is next level.

and we have five guys here now, in a few locations.

24-hour in-n-out sounds like something that happens in silence of the lambs, how could anyone eat there?

Z S, Wednesday, 28 December 2011 04:06 (twelve years ago) link

just spent the week in Cali and i would like to restate my unpopular position that no matter how good In-N-Out's burgers and shakes are they get the gasface for those shitty french fries

some dude (Mr. Stevenson #2), Wednesday, 28 December 2011 04:42 (twelve years ago) link

i think a lot of people agree with you re the fries.

they're better if you order them "well done."

trudy campbell, Wednesday, 28 December 2011 05:53 (twelve years ago) link

i worked for three years right next to the LAX In-N-Out and it was always insanely busy, planes overhead every two minutes...
