I wish we had details of the evidence. I'll admit to being a bit surprised. Can't argue with it, but that length of ban is very rare, no?

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 20 December 2011 20:18 (twelve years ago) link

Ya IK, that's how I feel. He must have outright admitted it?

lebateauivre, Tuesday, 20 December 2011 20:19 (twelve years ago) link

He admitted saying it (whatever it was) but the way it was reported as hingeing on semantics and cultural connotations made me think it was going to be a 'slightly guilty', if that.

It doesn't leave much wriggle room on Terry, anyway.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 20 December 2011 20:21 (twelve years ago) link

def. feel vindicated making that 'who will have a more lol liverpool career' poll in february now, even if ronan was annoyed by the audacity of thinking suarez and carroll could be lol

big popppa hoy, Tuesday, 20 December 2011 20:22 (twelve years ago) link

The statement said they are going to provide reasons for the verdict "in due course"

Number None, Tuesday, 20 December 2011 20:22 (twelve years ago) link

This isn't very lol tbh.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 20 December 2011 20:23 (twelve years ago) link

I don't think Suarez' defense could've been "cultural differences" tbh. He's playing in England.

"It doesn't leave much wriggle room on Terry, anyway."

This warms my heart tbh

lebateauivre, Tuesday, 20 December 2011 20:23 (twelve years ago) link

I'm not loling but he's a deeply unpleasant character and i'm not losing any sleep over this

Number None, Tuesday, 20 December 2011 20:24 (twelve years ago) link

i'm telling you, terry's denial will be a major factor in nothing happening there

suarez admitted to using 'negro' iirc? wasn't that common knowledge?

delonge and winding refn (p much resigned to deems), Tuesday, 20 December 2011 20:24 (twelve years ago) link

So clue me in, can Suarez now face criminal prosecution too?

lebateauivre, Tuesday, 20 December 2011 20:26 (twelve years ago) link

very unlikely that evra pushes for that, am not sure if anyone else can do so

delonge and winding refn (p much resigned to deems), Tuesday, 20 December 2011 20:27 (twelve years ago) link

Yes xp, but if he was speaking Spanish then it'd be different. I don't know what language he was speaking.

He could theoretically be prosecuted, but the verdict reads quite weakly so I wouldn't expect that to be a realistic outcome.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 20 December 2011 20:28 (twelve years ago) link

It's not Evra's call, it's for the police & CPS. But they need a complaint first and so far as I am aware there hasn't been one (unlike Terry)

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 20 December 2011 20:29 (twelve years ago) link

john terry was speaking english, i'm not sure that's relevant tbph IK

delonge and winding refn (p much resigned to deems), Tuesday, 20 December 2011 20:30 (twelve years ago) link

oh that's a beaut

delonge and winding refn (p much resigned to deems), Tuesday, 20 December 2011 20:30 (twelve years ago) link

Kean must stay.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 20 December 2011 20:30 (twelve years ago) link

Think it was supposed to have been 'negrito', maybe he argued that the diminutive form was especially affectionate/harmless? At least in an S. American context.

boxall, Tuesday, 20 December 2011 20:30 (twelve years ago) link

see yon wee black cunt

delonge and winding refn (p much resigned to deems), Tuesday, 20 December 2011 20:31 (twelve years ago) link

Relevant insofar as it'd have a different meaning in Spanish, is what I mean. I'm sure racist abuse in Spanish could equally be prosecuted.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 20 December 2011 20:31 (twelve years ago) link

i dunno, it is p lol that liverpool bought a dude like suarez, as if shit like this wasn't going to happen.

cya all post-downtime, let's hope shearer is in by then.

big popppa hoy, Tuesday, 20 December 2011 20:35 (twelve years ago) link

Suarez on twitter:

"Today is a very difficult and painful day for both me and my family. Thanks for all the support, I'll keep working!"

Very disappointed with today's verdict. This is the time when @luis16suarez needs our full support. Let's not let him walk alone. KD

That club statement isn't hanging back.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 20 December 2011 22:08 (twelve years ago) link

ffs Liverpool, we've been over this.

It is also our opinion that the accusation by this particular player was not credible - certainly no more credible than his prior unfounded accusations.

Number None, Tuesday, 20 December 2011 22:15 (twelve years ago) link

He has played with black players and mixed with their families whilst with the Uruguay national side and was Captain at Ajax Amsterdam of a team with a proud multi-cultural profile, many of whom became good friends

the american liverpool fans I know are v fucking annoying right now with their #freeluissuarez tags and whatnot

v-whiney (Cuauhtemoc Blanco), Tuesday, 20 December 2011 22:26 (twelve years ago) link

actually that's probably not something limited to the usa is it

v-whiney (Cuauhtemoc Blanco), Tuesday, 20 December 2011 22:27 (twelve years ago) link

I'm dreading finding out.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 20 December 2011 22:28 (twelve years ago) link

I've seen some of the choicer RAWK posts

Number None, Tuesday, 20 December 2011 22:30 (twelve years ago) link

theyve freed nelson mandela, might as well look into suarez now too

awesome to have a clever englishman zinging yr enemies (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 20 December 2011 22:31 (twelve years ago) link

looking forward to the EDL coming out in support of Luis Suarez

Nemanja Vmić (Julie Lagger), Tuesday, 20 December 2011 22:32 (twelve years ago) link

to be fair nobody appart from evra heard it, so he's been banned for 8 matches on one person's word. which seems strange to say the least.

jim in glasgow, Tuesday, 20 December 2011 22:40 (twelve years ago) link

the assumption is that he's admitted saying something but denied that he meant it offensively

Nemanja Vmić (Julie Lagger), Tuesday, 20 December 2011 22:42 (twelve years ago) link

will the text of the proceedings or judgement be made public?

cccccc, Tuesday, 20 December 2011 22:49 (twelve years ago) link

pretty sure dictatorships dont bother with those niceties

They said reasons would follow in due course but I imagine details will probably be leaked everywhere by tomorrow. It'll definitely be appealed too.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 20 December 2011 22:57 (twelve years ago) link

after what they done to a man like degsy hatton too

Except he admitted saying 'it'* himself. It's not that there was any dispute about that, the dispute was about whether 'it' was intended as a racist insult to wind up the opposition, or a jovial term of endearment as used in Uruguay between good old buddies who were just having a bit of banter together. Suarez claimed the latter, saying 'it' was what Evra's own teammates called him.

*'it' appears to have been 'negro', rather than 'negrito' (as reported a while ago)

Disclaimer: obviously I wasn't there, didn't here anything, and have no idea what the intent was

The Artist Formerly Known As Teh HoBB, Wednesday, 21 December 2011 00:05 (twelve years ago) link

The more i think about it the more ill-considered that statement from Liverpool seems. I mean they've essentially libelled Evra.

Number None, Wednesday, 21 December 2011 00:09 (twelve years ago) link

1) Gah - 'here' = 'hear'

2) NN - yes, quite. Those 'prior unfounded allegations' consisting of....what? The Chelsea lawn mower comment that was never attributed to Evra and.....nothing?

The Artist Formerly Known As Teh HoBB, Wednesday, 21 December 2011 00:13 (twelve years ago) link

And the Finnan incident?

Chris, Wednesday, 21 December 2011 00:17 (twelve years ago) link

Which was a complaint from some lip-reading fans. C'mon Chris

Number None, Wednesday, 21 December 2011 00:19 (twelve years ago) link

I know mate, I was just filling in the blank at the end of the previous post.

Chris, Wednesday, 21 December 2011 00:20 (twelve years ago) link

Fair enough, any thoughts on the statement yourself?

Number None, Wednesday, 21 December 2011 00:21 (twelve years ago) link

im just glad that this whole incident is now settled and can't disrupt the peaceful and friendly atmosphere that has hithero prevailed around east lancs derbies

awesome to have a clever englishman zinging yr enemies (nakhchivan), Wednesday, 21 December 2011 00:31 (twelve years ago) link

Amen to that.

This is the thing. Is the FA sure beyond reasonable doubt of the context in which he said what he's supposed to have said? I dunno. That "prior unfounded accusations" thing is disappointing though - pisses me off the number of people who've referred to those incidents.

Chris, Wednesday, 21 December 2011 00:35 (twelve years ago) link

That's the thing, it seems insane to me that an organization which obviously has access to the kind of legal advice that Liverpool does would release a statement like that. Why not put out a simple, terse announcement of their intent to appeal?
