My favorite place is called Casey Moore's. Its kind of all things to all people, but I like it and most people whom I take there really like it. Its an old house and you can sit inside or outside. It gets pretty lively most evenings, but not in a loud music and crowds way. Also, for the fellas, there is an outdoor urinal/waterfall called the "blarney stone." A real treat. Its at 850 S Ash Ave pretty close to downtown tempe.
If you can get into Phoenix please please please try and go to Chez Nous: http://www.cheznouscentral.com/index.shtml I can almost guarantee it will be worth it. Probably the most classic-ass place in PHX.
As far as dives near campus go, most of the ones I used to go to are "ROCKABILLY" or "PUNK" dives now. Anyway, check out the Yucca Tap room: http://www.yuccatap.com/ you can go there at 6am. Its great when there's not a band playing and it might even still be good if a band is playing.
I'll call a friend and see if he can remind me of better places near campus.
Oh, i dont think either of you are vegetarian, but you should still check out Pita Jungle where i used to work. They have meat on the menu too. Its fake healthy food with mediterainian themes. Give it a go and tell your server i said hi. http://www.pitajungle.com/
