Just listened to 'El Tren Fantasma', absolutely astonishing. If the rest of the stuff on the Quietus list is as good I'm going to be very happy.

Billy Dods, Monday, 19 December 2011 16:16 (twelve years ago) link

Well, if you're hoping to hear any more recordings of trains I think you'll be very disappointed but in a lot of ways I think our reissue chart is better than our albums chart. Certainly covers more ground.

Doran, Monday, 19 December 2011 16:25 (twelve years ago) link

Interesting-looking list, Cibuloid.

C.K. Dexter Holland, Monday, 19 December 2011 17:31 (twelve years ago) link

cibula always seems disappointed if people don't snort condescendingly at his taste, i should get in some "anthony hamilton rubberstamp" jibes

some dude (Mr. Stevenson #2), Monday, 19 December 2011 17:53 (twelve years ago) link

some dude always seems disappointed if he can't condescendingly assume what others intend with their lists

shakur rump (I left my login in El Sandboxo), Monday, 19 December 2011 18:06 (twelve years ago) link

Off-topic, Cibuloid, but what is the best Bersuit Vergarabat album?

jaymc, Monday, 19 December 2011 18:07 (twelve years ago) link

I mean, a guy who actually puts a 2011 Limp Bizkit record on his EOY list shouldn't cast any stones related to snorting at people's tastes.

shakur rump (I left my login in El Sandboxo), Monday, 19 December 2011 18:10 (twelve years ago) link

jon i have hung w/ cibula IRL and we have had silly arguments about him liking anthony hamilton more than me in the past, so maybe you chill on valiantly defending him from an evil internet bully?

some dude (Mr. Stevenson #2), Monday, 19 December 2011 18:13 (twelve years ago) link

oh come on, I wasn't trying to defend him, it was more just an excuse to zing you for your Bizkit inclusion

shakur rump (I left my login in El Sandboxo), Monday, 19 December 2011 18:13 (twelve years ago) link

I'm still learning how to troll from the best.

OH NOES, Monday, 19 December 2011 18:15 (twelve years ago) link

he zinged himself by including limp bizkit.

Anyone need a (Jimmy Riddle), Monday, 19 December 2011 18:22 (twelve years ago) link

dudes LULU is in my top 10, i'm clearly trolling and do not give a fuck

some dude (Mr. Stevenson #2), Monday, 19 December 2011 18:31 (twelve years ago) link

hey everyone LEAVE SOME DUDE ALONE

hey some dude I NO LONGER CARE if people snort or don't snort, you should see some of the stuff I left off this list that will show up on my eventual list of 200 (h/t Spotify)

hey jaymc BEST THREE BERSUIT ALBUMS: Hijos del Culo, La Argentinidad al Palo Volume 1, La Argentinidad al Palo Volume 2. Testosterona is okay, others are okay too. New one coming next year but frontman Gustavo Cordera has quit the band and the other guys, while great songwriters and maybe better singers, are nowhere near as interesting vocally. We shall see.

Damn I missed this place with its random bullshit. You're all beautiful and I love you.

Cibuloid, Monday, 19 December 2011 18:54 (twelve years ago) link

As for Anthony Hamilton: forget everything else, dude is a GREAT songwriter, still just as much country as R&B. And I didn't think his earliest stuff was all that great and didn't love Ain't Nobody Worrying as much as other stuff...but yeah close enough to rubber-stamp status for me as anyone else ever.

Cibuloid, Monday, 19 December 2011 18:57 (twelve years ago) link

oh you care, you care so much, but in an endearing way.

some dude (Mr. Stevenson #2), Monday, 19 December 2011 19:00 (twelve years ago) link

there's actually been a LOT of love for the hamilton on the R&B thread but it's just not hitting the spot for me like some other 'contemporary old school'-type soul records this year (raphael saadiq, robin thicke, marsha ambrosius).

some dude (Mr. Stevenson #2), Monday, 19 December 2011 19:01 (twelve years ago) link

i haven't even waded into r&b thread yet, just signed back up here on saturday. i like marsha okay but no great shakes, saadiq is like every other week with me because I find his songwriting as frustrating as his presentation is exhilarating, won't listen to robin thicke because oh I don't know why probably his hair. was excited about jill scott until i listened to the album and i think it's still that she has so much love for herself that there's no room for me to love her. beyonce is half-great half-ehhh as far as i'm concerned. so there it is with me.

nikki lynette might end up being higher on my list. she is dope-opolis.

Cibuloid, Monday, 19 December 2011 19:14 (twelve years ago) link

curious which half of the Beyonce album you think is great

OH NOES, Monday, 19 December 2011 19:19 (twelve years ago) link

Like: I Care, I Miss You, Best Thing I Never Had, Love on Top, End of Time, Countdown.

Don't Really Like: 1+1, Rather Die Young, Party, Start Over, I Was Here, Girls Run the World (aka Where's That M.I.A. Disc)

Cibuloid, Monday, 19 December 2011 19:26 (twelve years ago) link

Interesting breakdown! I don't know if anyone else has split it up quite like that, although yr likes include my top 4 (I Care, I Miss You, Countdown, End of Time).

Someday I'm going to "get" "Best Thing I Never Had" and will be slightly embarrassed for all of the "lol Hornsby pastiche" comments I've made. Until that day, I can only say "lol Hornsby pastiche".

OH NOES, Monday, 19 December 2011 19:29 (twelve years ago) link

yeah it would be easier to go 'yay the-dream/tricky boo everyone else' but i don't really hear it like that. occurs to me that at least two of the songs are hard for me to listen to because i have a teenage daughter and i do not like the idea of beyonce urging her to die young for a fella and/or to drip with swagoo

Cibuloid, Monday, 19 December 2011 19:32 (twelve years ago) link

lol

Beyonce and Rihanna are both pretty problematic that way (ESP. Rihanna; I am enjoying the fuck out of her new album but she is kind of a disaster)

OH NOES, Monday, 19 December 2011 19:40 (twelve years ago) link

tbf your second complaint should be directed at Kanye, and no teenage girls should exposed to him

Number None, Monday, 19 December 2011 19:42 (twelve years ago) link

my daughter is totally uninterested in kanye and his music. she's an actress so she's showtunes all the way -- also problematic in its own way sometimes but still.

Cibuloid, Monday, 19 December 2011 19:48 (twelve years ago) link

lmao @ "die young for a fella and/or to drip with swagoo"

some dude (Mr. Stevenson #2), Monday, 19 December 2011 19:59 (twelve years ago) link

without clicking Liturgy will be number 1

The Hamilton-Scott duet is one of my favorite singles.

Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 19 December 2011 22:31 (twelve years ago) link

yup Liturgy at #1. Love that album, pretty good list whiney (with a few exceptions obviously)

Anyone need a (Jimmy Riddle), Monday, 19 December 2011 22:31 (twelve years ago) link

16 albums from liked ok to loved, a couple i dont know and korn/megadeth.
Not bad

Anyone need a (Jimmy Riddle), Monday, 19 December 2011 22:33 (twelve years ago) link

Actually hearing that Liturgy record described as "the Lars Von Trier of metal" makes all kinds of sense.

shakur rump (I left my login in El Sandboxo), Monday, 19 December 2011 22:41 (twelve years ago) link

my thought exactly!

miranda lambo (dealwithit.gif), Monday, 19 December 2011 22:43 (twelve years ago) link

Why is it alright for every publication that CW works for to have click through galleries but, according to him, not mine? Serious question.

Doran, Monday, 19 December 2011 22:44 (twelve years ago) link

Man I can't believe I'm captain save a cw here, but he already did kind of explain the difference itt or another one. Also, fwiw I don't think he's the one who gets to decide how Spin formats its listicles.

shakur rump (I left my login in El Sandboxo), Monday, 19 December 2011 22:46 (twelve years ago) link

But I do appreciate that Popmatters added a "single page" option on their lists this year.

But I do appreciate that Popmatters added a "single page" option on their lists this year.

God forbid they make it easy for people to read their lists.

Thats why I said "I do appreciate".

hey jaymc BEST THREE BERSUIT ALBUMS

Thanks! Heard a song of theirs when I was in Buenos Aires last month; made me want to check out a full album.

Some good picks in Bearded's EOY list

Doran, Tuesday, 20 December 2011 14:21 (twelve years ago) link
