I am stocking up on tea, orange juice, vitamin C, and airborne (even if those things dont work at all) today in the efforts of being the only one not sick at our house. The little one has croup and I can honestly say that hearing those coughs come out of your kid is frightening as hell.

shakur rump (I left my login in El Sandboxo), Monday, 19 December 2011 14:36 (twelve years ago) link

Is the croup a specific thing or a name for a bad cough?

Even though I know there is no evidence that loading up on vitamin c or echinacea etc does any good, I do it anyway. (though actually maybe echinacea does something since doctors warn people with immunity problems to avoid it)

Anyway, good luck.

Sandbox Jesse, Monday, 19 December 2011 14:47 (twelve years ago) link

Its specific, but ultimately little more than a really horrible sounding cough. Its one of those things that sounds worse than it really is, because even in the middle of one his most horrifying sounding coughs last night, he was smiling and laughing about all the attention we were giving him.

sarah's mom came into town ahead of them leaving for DC this morning, but she has had bronchitis so now i'm paranoid that one of us will get bronchitis. i was awake for about an hour at 3 a.m. because she was coughing in our living room and every time she coughed it sounded like someone firing a shotgun.

people please stop being sick, thanks

Speaking of which -- where has Jordan been lately?

jaymc, Monday, 19 December 2011 15:58 (twelve years ago) link

(o not 0)

jaymc, Monday, 19 December 2011 15:58 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, I actually haven't lived in the city for 4 years now.

evanston counts imo

or wait... skokie? waukegan? wisconsin?

tumblr whineys (Cuauhtemoc Blanco), Monday, 19 December 2011 16:07 (twelve years ago) link

it doesn't look like Jordan's been on ILX much at all recently, I know he's doing a lot of music stuff (as usual).

Airborne is just a fizzy, drinkable version of Vit C.

My fave cold avoidance strategy besides washing my hands like an OCD sufferer is that at the first sign of getting stuffy, I take Sudafed (the real kind). It keeps my head clear and (gross alert) prevents my ears from getting clogged up, which seems to be the trick in avoiding ear infections, which is pretty much the endgame for any cold I catch.

Also, I think I'm going to resurrect whiskey and honey as a cough remedy now that I've read numerous articles about how cough medicine doesn't actually do anything and thus ruined the placebo effect. Might as well just knock I myself out.

wore glasses and said things (thejenny), Monday, 19 December 2011 16:10 (twelve years ago) link

you should read the new yorker article about the placebo effect and how placebos work even if you know they're placebos as long as you believe in the placebo effect. then the placebo effect will be restored.

n/a, Monday, 19 December 2011 16:12 (twelve years ago) link

the next time jordan is in chicago i am going to make sure to go to his show. does anyone know when that is?

also, i am in ohio, whee

jenny, also whiskey tastes waaaay better than cough syrup -- skip the honey and do it up right

league of women voters, Monday, 19 December 2011 16:12 (twelve years ago) link

i believe in the placebo effect and i do believe i read that article
it's why i can drink whiskey when i have a cold instead of increasing my zinc ions or w/e

league of women voters, Monday, 19 December 2011 16:13 (twelve years ago) link

^^^

wore glasses and said things (thejenny), Monday, 19 December 2011 16:18 (twelve years ago) link

Cough drops help, too. Placebo or glycerin/Mentho-Lyptus WHO KNOWS. And DON'T TELL ME. Because I can't do shots of whiskey at work.

My office is full of zinc pushers and I don't want to be all "SCIENCE SAYS THAT IS NONSENSE" but I also get tired of politely declining their zinc donations every time I sneeze.

wore glasses and said things (thejenny), Monday, 19 December 2011 16:20 (twelve years ago) link

Placebos working really depends on how you define "work".

Jeff, Monday, 19 December 2011 16:31 (twelve years ago) link

Belief or not.

the last shit-cold I had, about a month ago, gave me a whole new appreciation for hot toddies with lots of lemon and honey

Yeah, Evanston.

That New Yorker article was pretty interesting.

shakur rump (I left my login in El Sandboxo), Monday, 19 December 2011 16:53 (twelve years ago) link

i don't like it hot though
room temp toddy pls

league of women voters, Monday, 19 December 2011 16:56 (twelve years ago) link

Well a "room temperature toddie" just doesn't sound as inviting, tbh.

shakur rump (I left my login in El Sandboxo), Monday, 19 December 2011 16:57 (twelve years ago) link

to me it does!

league of women voters, Monday, 19 December 2011 16:59 (twelve years ago) link

i find hot liquor kind of repulsive
mulled wine, etc

league of women voters, Monday, 19 December 2011 16:59 (twelve years ago) link

I like Glogg, but I was kind of ho-hum on the warm sake I had the other night. (Chilled is better, IMO.)

jaymc, Monday, 19 December 2011 17:27 (twelve years ago) link

Had Glogg at Simon's on Friday after some xmas shopping and it was suitably festive.

Today is my last day before we leave for Connecticut and trying to care about work is proving to be very difficult.

breaking: i'm flying into chicago wednesday night, interviewing thursday (and up for a fap anytime after!), megabusing to st. louis on friday morning.

Z S, Monday, 19 December 2011 18:18 (twelve years ago) link

Good luck with the interview! Wish I could FAP, but I will be driving to Ann Arbor Thursday night, weather permitting.

shakur rump (I left my login in El Sandboxo), Monday, 19 December 2011 18:19 (twelve years ago) link

I am getting my hair done, which feels like a vain endeavor that I should gladly cast aside in favor of fellowship and libations but if I reschedule I won't be able to get another apt for at least a month and lord, you should see my roots now.

If y'all go somewhere nearby, I will stop by after.

i miiiiiiiiight be able to FAP on Thursday depending on how prepared i am to leave on friday (mainly how clean my apartment is).

i would be willing to do delilah's

good luck ZS!

julia, Monday, 19 December 2011 18:38 (twelve years ago) link

Z, where are you staying? Do you want to meet at Delilah's? It's right by Jenny's house, so you should just crash at her place.

Sandbox Jesse, Monday, 19 December 2011 18:43 (twelve years ago) link

Delilah's http://g.co/maps/t7rdt

Where are you staying?

Sandbox Jesse, Monday, 19 December 2011 18:44 (twelve years ago) link

i'll most likely be staying with a friend around Logan Square for Thursday night, but i still need to ask about that!

Z S, Monday, 19 December 2011 18:51 (twelve years ago) link

Hey, my neighborhood! You guys should hang out there, there are cabs now.

tumblr whineys (Cuauhtemoc Blanco), Monday, 19 December 2011 18:52 (twelve years ago) link

n/a, Monday, 19 December 2011 18:54 (twelve years ago) link

i'm flexible on time and location for a thursday night fap. it looks like Delilah's is pretty close to where i'm staying anyway, but if people want to try another place that's cool too.

SO NERVOUS

Z S, Monday, 19 December 2011 18:58 (twelve years ago) link

Delilah's is convenient to Logan Square and if it gets Jenny there, I'd vote for it (it's right across the street from Jenny's beauty parlor).

Sandbox Jesse, Monday, 19 December 2011 19:08 (twelve years ago) link

I'm going to be in MN so idgaf really, have fun!

tumblr whineys (Cuauhtemoc Blanco), Monday, 19 December 2011 19:10 (twelve years ago) link

Good luck, by the way.

There are more cabs in Logan Square than there used to be, possibly. The trendy restaurants have attracted more of them. Dan, your mention of it reminded me of something I know I told Katie, but I don't remember if I mentioned elsewhere.

One Sunday evening this spring, I left Katie's house, and because of the Diversey bus' ABSURD Sunday night schedule (stops running between the lake and Logan Square Blue line at 8 p.m. Sunday nights), I was stuck at Logan Square. I wandered and waited at the CTA stop for 1/2 hour and there were no cabs, so I called one to pick me up at Diversey and Kedzie. When I got in the cab, he said "What are you doing here??" I told him I was visiting a friend, to which he responded that "You are a very good friend if you come here," and then went on talking about cab drivers not liking that area.

As much shit as I've talked about Logan Square, I was really surprised at that guy's opinions. At the Square itself, there are a lot of bars and restaurants that would bring people to the area, and it wasn't like he was picking me up in front of a smoldering crack house.

Sandbox Jesse, Monday, 19 December 2011 19:27 (twelve years ago) link

Not to mention the fact that I'm brown. It's not like he was picking up an Hitler's wet dream.
