Also, Saturday is St Patrick's Day, which means that even in bad weather Manhattan will be very unpleasant in some areas. You might want to steer clear of Irish bars, whiskey or no whiskey.

I would recommend drinking in one of my locals on Saturday (in Brooklyn). Most of them aren't swank (altho one comes to mind that DOES have a fireplace) but they're quality drinking venues and should be signif quieter on the holiday.

Unfortunately I don't know yet whether I'll be marching in the parade that morning/afternoon, will have to get back to you. Given the forecast I'm guessing we won't, because after dancing the Tartan Day Parade last year IN FREEZING, PELTING RAIN we all got sick and said "nevar again".

yeah a quiet brooklyn local sounds totally ideal! i think a large number of my friends have somehow decided that mona's is a good idea on saturday but that really doesn't sound possible now that i see it in writing, either they or i am insane.

instead of st patrick's day i'm going to wait a week and celebrate greek independence day in astoria by watching some sort of soccer game and then rioting.

Never been to Mona's but the online descrip sounds great EXCEPT FOR ON MARCH THE SEVENTEENTH. I'm gonna recc either Union Hall (fireplace, couches, and indoor bocce), Freddy's (good Bklyn local, soccer crowd, a little older and quieter), Soda (good local, serves food, a little younger and Bklyn hipster), or this bar on Washington that Ian and I just tried, but I don't know the name of it...anyway, there are plenty of options and most have patios for smoking & drinking SIMULTANEOUSLY.
