In an interview with Rolling Stone, Coldplay's Chris Martin, professed his love for boobs and says they saved him from being gay.

He admits that growing up he worried about being gay.

"It was more like, 'Oh s***, what if?', because was brought up to think it was wrong," he told Rolling Stone.

"But then it struck me: who gives a s**t? And then it wasn't a problem.

"It sounds silly to say it now, but when you're a kid you think, 'I'm going to burn in hell for eternity if I like other guys or if I marry someone Jewish'."

But he eventually calmed down when he realized he was heterosexual.

"I was swayed by boobs," he says. "Let's face it, they're fantastic." Even so, it was not until he was 22 that he finally lost his virginity.

"There were religious issues and s**t like that," he says, adding: "Also confidence. I had a tricky time with girls.

"I got trapped in the friendship tip many, many times.

"I don't want to be the person that makes everyone laugh before they go off and bang. I want to be the guy that everybody bangs."

i had catatonia's 'mulder and scully' stuck in my head, earlier, in the shower, or at least the thirty or so seconds i could remember. i think i just spent the remaining three minutes thinking: huh. catatonia. they were a band, that happened. people bought their records.

thompp, Sunday, 18 December 2011 02:44 (twelve years ago) link

By God, there is so much to hate about this band, but I unashamedly love this song, and its video, still.

(I only dared this poll on sandbox, without the sb function tbh)

lebateauivre, Sunday, 18 December 2011 02:47 (twelve years ago) link

this song actually makes me angry, and then i realise it is 2011 and i am angry at coldplay

the other day i found solace in a fond memory of travis's 1999 classic 'why does it always rain on me', though

thompp, Sunday, 18 December 2011 02:50 (twelve years ago) link

it was raining at the time

thompp, Sunday, 18 December 2011 02:50 (twelve years ago) link

i don't mind this song. and some other bits from coldplay. but they're shite tbh. also, let me bring this thread down, my overriding memory of this song is hearing a live version on radio 1 as i sat in my parents' car as they were being told by a doctor that my grandfather's brain tumour was terminal. HA!

True story: I saw Travis around '99 or so at the Melkweg, in Amsterdam. I was with four friends, two girls and two guys, and it was around the time of my live where we were in Paradiso or Melkweg gigging four or five nights a week. We saw Travis, fine and all, got pretty drunk during the concert.
When it was over, we danced for an hour in the Milky Way(I think the Dewaele Brothers were dj'ing after, Soulwax), and then we left. Outside the venue the big Travis bus was parked. Our female friends ~ drunk but wouldn't do otherwise without any alcohol probably ~ saw movement in the Travis tourbus and started banging the bus' window. All windows of the bus had drawn curtains. But they banged and banged on it, singing "Why does it always rain on me?" (it did rain at the time).
After some serious banging on one bus window, a highly agitated and angry man inside the bus pulled open the curtain to tell us off. It was Fran Healy, the lead singer of Travis, and it turned out the girls had been banging the window of the bus toilet while he was trying to have a shit in peace. He was enraged, sitting on the loo, trying to have a peaceful shit after the concert, but not allowed by the banging on the window by our girls, who loudly sang "Why does it always rain on me?". The expression on his face was.... one of completely agony and pain. I'll never forget it. We laughed so hard, all night, and we still do about that moment...

I like "In My Place", "Politik", and "Viva La Vida".

"In My Place" is a much better version of the same song template IMO. simple melody/chord progression, but a much more appealing hook.

quite like quite a few Coldplay songs, this one was shit 10 years ago and is shit now, so limp and dreary

Which given how "In My Place" made me want to destroy buildings, rip Martin's head off and shit down the hole explains a lot about how I feel about "Yellow" in particular.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 18 December 2011 17:32 (twelve years ago) link

didn't like this song at first but now that there's a whole spectrum of Coldplay songs i love or tolerate or hate and it's kind of in the upper midrange, i have to answer "yes" to this thread

I went to their concert in 2008 or 09 or so, I was twelfth row in an arena. They played this song and I turned around to see ~20,000 people all gasp in wonder at the same time. The sharp intake of breath created a temporary vacuum, four people died of asphyxiation

"In My Place" made me want to destroy buildings, rip Martin's head off and shit down the hole

if it's not too awkward, i would shit down the same hole simultaneously for a multiplier effect, if you're ok with it

I watched Shooting Fish the other month and every song on the soundtrack brought up that feeling of remembering that John Major ever existed and was Prime Minister

Clocks and Moses I like a lot. Yellow is right on the dividing line between good Coldplay and bad Coldplay, so I voted 'Yes.'. There's way fouler pools of dog vomit in their catalogue--Speed of Sound, Viva La Vida, In My Place, the first two-thirds of Fix You...

I remember watching a ton of MTV2 late at night back when I was a freshman in college, which was around when the video for Yellow came out, and it was one of my 2 am jams. So I've always liked it for that. I really like Parachutes, still.
