the piece is only available in german, and my crappy yiddish isn't good enough to understand it (it being a scholarly paper from 1890)

that is probably beyond my idle effort too
what do you know about the context already?

well, it's cited by the jewish encyclopedia + various jewish year books etc as the earliest, most extensive discussion of the ban. i can read the hebrew in the article, which is mostly quoted from the ban, and the little german i can read seems to discuss the context of the ban in the 11th century. i'm trying to figure out what reasons he gave for the ban, and i suspect they're somewhere in the paper.

(it also seems to discuss whether or not the prohibition against reading someone else's mail actually comes from this ban)

one possible reason (tho not mentioned w/ relation to Reb Gershom's ban) was written by the Ritba: "Where the customary practice is only to marry one woman, [a man] is not entitled to marry another woman in addition to his wife, since it is an implied term that she married him with the understanding that he not marry another woman."
also, i speculate that it has something to do w/ the section of the ban that says a man cannot force his wife to accept a divorce. if it was to bolster that, the ban on polygamy may just be a way of not letting men get around not divorcing their wives by marrying a new wife and ignoring the first one.

It only just occurred to me that the thread title was probably meant to be "jewish noize sandboxers." All time typo.
