hey guys i just skipped all of this thread to see wussherface from home&away and to set my bookmark. did i miss anything or was it just that twice a year ws thread chatter that is life-draining and never really gets anywhere about nothing really?

big popppa hoy, Saturday, 17 December 2011 08:04 (twelve years ago) link

there's no commonly used male equivalent to "lady doctor" or "female musician".

I don't know about that, you have male nurse, or male childminder for example. Like the female equivalent they're necessarily meant in a demeaning way, but culture often gets in the way of them being neutral terms.

Anyway, shouldn't really be in a WS thread, my lady spouse (do you see?) will not be pleased, but whoever Ari Graynor is, I would most certainly consider WS with anyone elses, and blonde hair isn't usually my thing.

I've seen a couple of her movies and at the time didn't rate her above "general hot person", but on closer inspection she's got this Monica Vitti thing with her eyes that's just WOW.

No, what I meant is that there is no commonly used prefix for a male doctor or male musician, because those professions are thought to be male by default, hence you can just say "doctor" or "musician". "Male nurse" is an example of the same thing, when a profession is considered female by default.

Tuomas, Monday, 19 December 2011 08:30 (twelve years ago) link

The use of "lady doctor" has faded considerably, now that women are not only going to med school in greater numbers, but are often choosing to serve in the less glamorous roles of family medicine and pediatrics, so they are often one's main doctor. As for "female musician", I have never encountered it. Not once. And I don't seem to be a carrier for the idea that musicians are male by default. Composers and conductors, otoh...

"Male nurse" is still going strong, although they are less of a rarity now.

Aimless, Monday, 19 December 2011 19:28 (twelve years ago) link

i have yet to encounter "lady doctor" within the field of medicine

Ever watched her try to keep Zuckerberg on-message? This is kind of fascinating - http://venturebeat.com/2011/11/07/zuckerberg-and-sandberg-on-charlie-rose/

Amy Adams is charming, but I could do without the pinup thing. Same with the nailbiting. "Ugh," I believe the kids say.

Joan C is definitely cute.

lol at that yorke pic

I gotta admit, approaching the 2012 I was thinking that I'd find the ws threads more creepy, and the "hold on I'm spoogin here!"-style comments kind of give that feel, but overall the beauty of the pictures on this thread break that barrier for me.

I still think the level of creepiness is like this though:
Posting picture of smashable person you're attracted to - mildy creepy
Making color commentary -- a bit creepy there, depends on wording
Using a reference to your crush as the professional name you sell work under -- CREPEY

knackered housecat, Thursday, 29 December 2011 22:55 (twelve years ago) link
