Champagne probably tasted like Sprite to Hitchens so I'll cut him some slack. The other 3 are legit overrated. Lobster wouldn't be overrated if it wasn't expensive.

Maybe I just don't have the best back, but I always find it hard to simultaneously sit on the grass in a position amenable to eating AND feel comfortable enough to get romantic or chilled out or whatever mood picnic it is.

Are we voting on "most overrated" or best of these? I'd probably say champagne is the most overrated -- even *good* champagne tastes kind of like a soft drink to me.

Champagne is overrated if you're living in North America, but not so in France. It's far cheaper, and the cult around it is subdued... there, I'd say it's rated correctly. With oysters, it's divine. For a man such as Hitchens, who could travel to France, and bring with him home a 25 E bottle of Lermandier-Bernier, and share it with friends on a holiday? I would've urged Hitch to reconsider.
