I am pro-picnic if someone else is bringing the food and cleaning up, or if it's at Tanglewood where about 85% of the "food" ends up being bottles of wine and you're listening to a great orchestra play awesome live music.

Hitchens obv had a restrictive definition of what constitutes a picnic. For me it is eating any meal outdoors without a waiter/waitress.

1) Outdoors is a nice place.
2) Eating is pleasant.

Champagne is overrated if you're living in North America, but not so in France. It's far cheaper, and the cult around it is subdued... there, I'd say it's rated correctly. With oysters, it's divine. For a man such as Hitchens, who could travel to France, and bring with him home a 25 E bottle of Lermandier-Bernier, and share it with friends on a holiday? I would've urged Hitch to reconsider.
