i walked by it a bunch as it was being built. looked like a piece of shit fortress. and the 'best location in europe' isn't an overstatement: right across from tiergarten, couple blocks from freidrichstrasse, right near parliament.

Construction begins on Berlin condominium project by Roger Bundschuh and Artist Cosima von Bonin.

Situated on historic Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz in Berlin-Mitte, this 2500 sqm luxury condominium building takes unique advantage of its small triangular site. Breaking with the previously rigid Berlin urban planning codes, the building will present itself as a jagged study of cantilevering blocks, deep recesses and a dramatic opening of the typical Berlin interior courtyard, flooding this usually dark and uninviting space with light and air.

Tempelhof to become enormous city park
Published: 31 Aug 09 16:59 CET
Online: http://www.thelocal.de/society/20090831-21611.html

The airfield of Berlin's historic Tempelhof airport will become the German capital’s largest park by the summer of 2010, city officials announced on Monday.

“Beginning in May the Tempelhof field will be open to all,” Berlin's urban development Senator Ingeborg Junge-Reyer said.

With an area of 230 hectares, the airfield park that straddles both the Kreuzberg and Neukölln districts will be significantly larger than Berlin’s famous Tiergarten park.

As of Tuesday, Berlin will be sole owner of the park after purchasing the federal government’s share for €35 million, Junge-Reyer said. The city plans to spend a further €60 million over the next seven years to develop the open space. Another €1.6 million per year will go to park maintenance and security.

Once the new park opens, the six-kilometre fence surrounding the former airfield will remain and authorities will close five entrance points each night.

Tempelhof, built in 1923, operated until October 2008 when dwindling passenger numbers led to the closure of the facility. It is most famous as the West Berlin airport where Allied pilots continuously brought supplies into the city in 1948-49 as the Soviets tried to starve the city into submission during the Berlin Airlift.

The 1936 Nazi-era terminal – which is more than one kilometre in length – will continue to be rented out for cultural exhibitions such as the fashion expo Bread & Butter.

lxy I am in Berlin right now! I leave Monday morning. I went to Salzburg for work and came here to visit a friend for the weekend.i am staying in mitte (northish). Today I went to an amusement park that has been closed since 2001 and rode a train around the overgrown park and remnants if rides and buildings. Tonight my friend is taking me to her old hood which I think is in some part of kreuzberg. There is so much cool art on the streets here, I wish I had a more flu every day stencil...

My last night in Berlin: I was going to go to a symphony concert but I got caught in a crazy rain and was late. Then I went to see Skyfall instead and it was very long with 30 min of commercials at the start AND an intermission! But that is ok because in Germany you can have beer at the movies. You can have beer everywhere! On the way home I ran into my friend's friends on the Ubahn platform and they said "on you need this train" which I thought was the wrong direction but I figures "hey I guess a local dude knows better than I do." That was not true! It was the wrong direction. And the Ubahn closed for the night for track work! I found a bus to take me home but it terminated early so I waited for the next one. When I finally got back, my key broke in the door! No one answers when I yelled! I went to an Internet cafe to call my friend (she was staying at her gf's that nit) but her phone was off. I left frantic voice messages. I started to panic. What if I had broken the lock and everyone was locked in? What if I had to buy them a new lock and keys for the 15 ppl that live there?! I had to leave for the airport in 4.5 hours! I went back and banged and yelled "mein Schlussel ist kaput!" and finally someone answered and the door was not broken and we pulled the key out with some pliers and all was well in about 30 seconds. I returned to my friend's room, packed, slept 2 hours, then went to the airport. I upgraded my seat. I deserved it. Extra legroom ftw.
