Do you know why there are no jokes about the Jonestown tragedy?

Nu-Edward III (edward iii), Monday, 18 December 2006 15:28 (seventeen years ago) link

I know i'm late on Stallone talk, but favorite non-Rocky Stallone movie here is Demolition Man, set in a future where "all restaurants are Taco Bell".

(first half hour is like non-stop misery, mom-fucking, kitten torturing. rest of the movie wide-eyed, ecstatic, wanderings. he liked music, that bad boy)

Yeah I thought Jonestown was pretty awesome, but that's partially because I didn't know much about it except for the Kool-Aid.

Happy Feet - if you can make it through the Moulin Rouge style pop mashups, it actually gets pretty good in the last half. Somebody should do a write-up on the post-colonial "happy savages, entertain us" subtext buried in its friendly "save the environment" theme, though. It's begging for it.

did you get that box set by the way? it is SUH-weet.

slate had a very weird article about PS and the box set... the article focused mostly on "miracle at morgan's creek" which isn't in the set!

a mediocre black-and-white cookie in a cellophane wrapper (hanks1ockli), Wednesday, 20 December 2006 15:57 (seventeen years ago) link

I assume that's a rights thing? It's available on its own anyway.

I suspect I'm getting the box for Christmas. I like The Sin of Harold Diddlebock better than 2 or 3 of the box's films, too.

Dr M (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 20 December 2006 16:04 (seventeen years ago) link

The boy picked 2 versions of A Christmas Carol at Blarkbluster last night - the incredibly boring George C Scott version, and Scrooged. With the help of legos he made it through the first ("why did you pick this one instead of the cartoon?" my mom frequently asked). Scrooged (which I hadn't watched in probably 10 years) was a total fucking TREAT though, and he loved it.

The only part of the George C Scott Christmas Carol I liked was the Ghost of Christmas Present's outfit, which the boy described accurately as "ripped off from the Burger King".

NB I realize recently that all this referring to my son as "the boy" almost seems like he is a boyfriend and not a son. Please note this is not the case.

Played for a week at the Gene Siskel Film Center.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 20 December 2006 16:56 (seventeen years ago) link

By the way, Morbius would hate the Siskel Film Center if he lived here -- not because of the theatre itself, which is pretty good (first time I went was for a Frederick Wiseman retrospective), but because Siskel apparently only went to the theatre that now bears his name three or four times while working at the Tribune. Ebert's no hoity-toity art-film guy, either, but at least he made an effort, reviewing dozens of films there over the years.
