from a review i saw

Been a lot of coverage of ‘rock’ music here at LTW, serious discussion questioning why The Mercury Prize chooses to ignore the entire genre, and also more lighthearted fun from our kitchen guru Vegan Black Metal Chef – as such I thought I had better take look at rock, but I like my tunes a little darker than most so was intrigued by the first release from Obake – I had no knowledge of this band, a four piece consisting of Massimoo Pupillo (Bass), Eraldo Bernocchi (Guitars), Lorenzo Fornasari (Vocals/FX), and Bales Pandi (Drums) however a little research revealed that its members have variously been members of or worked with Zu, Faith No More, The Melvins, Merzbow, Bill Laswell, Justin Broadwick, and Thomas Fehlmann; some serious names in the sphere of cutting edge and experimental music.

so "has a member of Zu"

nah having the same name as the most popular Canadian rapper of all time was pretty brilliant self-branding, may have been accidental but you should still give yourself some credit for that

This Obake is basically

the band

I wasn't feeling the Earth and Mogwai, but will re-listen. I got Obake a couple weeks ago and it is definitely impressive. Still listening to figure out how much I'll like it for continued listening. I'm excited to check out Book Of Knots, Loss, Alva Noto, Asva, Enablers, Killl, etc.

I always appreciate Rock-A-Rolla's aesthetic focus, even if some of the albums are just interesting, but I have no interest in hearing much more. For me, they'd be the perfect mag if they expanded coverage a bit and added some writers who are less dismissive of stoner/doom/psych, stuff that may be less innovative and experimental, but often has more staying power, at least in my playlists. I'm just happy I can now get an electronic subscription for a fraction of the price of a U.S. subscription where you get the issues a month and a half after publication.

I wonder if a magazine that covered the very best in lots of genres could survive. Like no genre is out of bounds. If its top notch it gets covered rather than based on sales/label advertising.

Whiney you could save the music magazine.

Minga Frump (Jimmy Riddle), Tuesday, 13 December 2011 17:09 (twelve years ago) link

lots of mags have an ostensibly omnivorous approach or have an 'only the best' approach to covering genres outside their primary interest. obviously nobody can cover EVERYTHING, though the most you could hope for really is ANYTHING, a lack of emphasis or predictability. (xpost)

huh well Kerr you read it first and tell me if its worth it

he said "grody" (henrietta lacks), Tuesday, 13 December 2011 17:31 (twelve years ago) link

its quite a small sized magazine even though it has plenty of pages. But it seems theres a few more articles i fancy so i just ordered it for £3.75. It wasn't in Smiths today when I picked up The Wire.
I think Kerrang's albums of the year issue might be out tomorrow. Last years was surprisingly ok iirc.
Terrorizers will be january i think?

Kerrang proving they really will put any old shite by metallica in their list.

They probably decided on the jump from the traditional top 20 to 101 just to include Loutallica

i really need to check out that machinedrum album. is it along the same lines as his work 3-4 years ago? that's the last time i heard his stuff.

Z S, Wednesday, 14 December 2011 21:11 (twelve years ago) link

I don't know his previous stuff, but the lazy comparison for Room(s) is a less murky Burial.

sean doily, Wednesday, 14 December 2011 21:16 (twelve years ago) link

I don't see that comparison at all

Number None, Wednesday, 14 December 2011 21:20 (twelve years ago) link

Ok maybe I'm completely wrong, but it makes sense in my head (I've only listened to Room(s) twice so it was a snap judgement)...they're coming from different genres obv but the use of vocal samples seems notably similar (though maybe not uniquely so) and the overall ambience of emotive background music is functionally very close.

sean doily, Wednesday, 14 December 2011 21:24 (twelve years ago) link

I'm just listening to Room(s) now and there are more similarities than i remembered. Machinedrum's music a is a lot busier though. It feels pretty cluttered at times, which isn't something you can say about Burial

Number None, Wednesday, 14 December 2011 21:29 (twelve years ago) link

i didn't dig that room(s) album, and i love burial's music.

Daniel, Esq., Wednesday, 14 December 2011 21:40 (twelve years ago) link

new machinedrum is definitely way moodier than his early stuff, the burial comparison is not that far off.

guess i'll have to give it another listen.

I've just noticed how conspiciously absent the Jamie Woon album is from these lists, I thought that would have fared a lot better.

boxedjoy, Wednesday, 14 December 2011 23:42 (twelve years ago) link

Kind of surprised at just how much love the Nicolas Jaar album is getting on some of these lists. Maybe I need to revisit, but it didn't seem all that amazing to me.
