tell us more about the "model poster" we should all aspire to

Derek Pringles (Deep in the Tony Hart land), Tuesday, 13 December 2011 14:32 (twelve years ago) link

You mean this was a semantic argument all along? Good lord. (agreed that FP sounds better tho, and knowing there is no magic 51=autoban lessens my ire considerably)

ledge, Tuesday, 13 December 2011 14:32 (twelve years ago) link

The fact is that some (very very few) comedy bans are unearned, and a few posters in the past probabably shouldn't've been hounded off the board. But if you go into a community (message board) and manage to piss off 51 people, you're probably not in the right place and should leave, and if you need the incentive of 51 irriated posters clicking GET YE GONE to push you over an edge, you likely lack the social graces to respond to a gentler push.

Call it "FLAG POST" or "WHIP" or "FLING POOP" or "SUGGEST BAN" and it's all the same thing, although it might seem a little more pleasant.

the thing i don't get about SBs is why the mods etc seem so determined to defend and maintain a system

tbf I don't think they are. Some are, but some also dislike it just as much. I personally am for it on balance (obv) but don't pretend it's anything like perfect or doesn't have problems.

(one thing I think could maybe appeal specifically to a mod about it is that's it's at least more democratic than just banning on a single mod's opinion, which means the common and easy "x was just banned because a mod hates them personally, the board adores their roguish ways and telling of truth to fools" mod attack is harder to sustain.) xp

stet, Tuesday, 13 December 2011 14:32 (twelve years ago) link

Remy otm. Rolo - obv there's no model poster but if 51 ppl think you're doing something wrong and/or offensive then there's probably something up that you should take a look at.

Who are these scared people getting their info about ILX or the SB from? I've certainly shared some unpopular opinions over the years and have never had more than 10 SBs at any one time as far as I know. Could it be that they're not getting a very balanced view of how the whole thing works?

If this is about semantics I'll rep for a button that says SHAME, SHAME and displays to the idiot a cartoon .gif of Newman in Jurassic Park locking out the computer system.

That is so very strange. I'd still like to know where they're getting their info from.

ᶘ ᵒᴥᵒᶅ (~curious orange~), Tuesday, 13 December 2011 14:37 (twelve years ago) link

This almost exactly mimics my experience with trying to get smart people with interesting opinions to post to ILX. They may well be all wrong, but it's certainly what they experience.

Yes, mine too, and I get mail to this end, and this problem is part of the thinking behind SB -- posters shouldn't have to be internet hardmen to post on ILX. But I don't think many people would argue that ILX is actually cuddlestein, and these posters are somehow confused.

What FT seems to be saying, though, that it's not the need to be an internet hardman that her potential posters are scared of, but SB itself. Which I don't fully understand. It might be happening, but I don't think it's half as common as people getting put off by the rambunctiousness.

stet, Tuesday, 13 December 2011 14:38 (twelve years ago) link

Anybody I've directed to the board who doesn't post cites the ridiculous number of in-jokes and pervasive meta-metaness and cliqueyness. I've never had anybody say anything about the HARD MAN CULTURE because for fuckssakes, I post on here and I am giant wuss.

remy bean in exile, Tuesday, 13 December 2011 14:40 (twelve years ago) link

I'd still like to know where they're getting their info from.

from reading the boards?

SB has no impact on people being internet dicks! it clamps down on the LOUDEST posters, not the meanest ones

degas-dirty monet (lex pretend), Tuesday, 13 December 2011 14:40 (twelve years ago) link

yeah the cliqueyness seems like more of a barrier, you sorta have to have a loud personality to be noticed xp

tumblr whine-y (dayo), Tuesday, 13 December 2011 14:42 (twelve years ago) link

yeah but lex thats an important distinction from what stet was arguing against, which was the idea that SB was preemptively thwarting people from coming here to post.

Idk what to do about the meanness in this world

Yes, can't agree with this. SB had been up and running for like a month before i even knew what it was.

Derek Pringles (Deep in the Tony Hart land), Tuesday, 13 December 2011 14:46 (twelve years ago) link

more than that I think ILX's culture of piling on the "undesirables" and the really nasty/personal attacks are what makes the message board suck.

where are the threads where we do this, i want in

Remy otm. Rolo - obv there's no model poster but if 51 ppl think you're doing something wrong and/or offensive then there's probably something up that you should take a look at.

I really don't agree with that since there's a real junior high mentality around here and you see posters just openly saying "everybody, you need to sb this guy"

I don't think these challops that get people banned are that indefensible, just that most posters who agree are probably afraid to say so

WE KILL BRONIES (Rolo Tony), Tuesday, 13 December 2011 14:48 (twelve years ago) link

srsly

bloating forecast: ruff swells (p much resigned to deems), Tuesday, 13 December 2011 14:48 (twelve years ago) link

The SB functionality isn't so much the problem as the culture around it, obviously, or there'd be no thread.

Sick Mouthy, Tuesday, 13 December 2011 14:49 (twelve years ago) link

I seriously have a hard time believing that people would be afraid to post to ILX for fear of being SB'd when only a handful of people (all of whom deserved it in one way or another) have ever acutally been SBd. That is just ridiculous and makes me think people are exaggerating the SB system and what it entails/results in.

there are like a zillion factors that make ilx what it is & the delicate engineering & interlacing of each is part of what makes ilx - i am sure there is some sort of balanced interplay even between ilx as hardman central & ilx as sb-haven that give it some kind of character or suggest an appropriate degree of leeway. there are a million things that would or wouldn't make ilx a desirable place to post to - privacy, aesthetics of taste, aesthetics of message boards, dominant posting style, &c&c&c - & so speculating on those that are lost or deterred by the occurrence of some of these traits feel weird - i'm sure others would be deterred or attracted by some other alternate-universe slight-variation on ilx. ilx is real good to read, a lot of good discussion happens on it, i'm sure some of that is down to what it's like.

Yes. And it never happens that people actually all freak out and run to the SB. I'm sure other mods will back me up on this, but I've never ever seen this happen, except in the unfortunate (?) instance of Whiney and the Big Bottom Birds. The most flags I've ever seen for a single post are, like 4 or 5, and that has happened v, v, v, rarely.

Nearly every single instance of awful piling on that I can recall occurs b/w board regulars, and escalates slowly over time; not as the result of a single trigger-happy SB culture.

otm. I think some of the things that prevent people posting are desirable, in that they keep out the type of posts that make other forums so insufferable, while otoh some of them keep out the type of posts ILX wants.

The real challenge is finding the balance. I've said before that ILX shouldn't be 4chan, but nor should it be Metafilter.

Why do you think ILX has such a large lurking contingent, while there only seem to be a couple of dozen regular posters? Hint: it's not the lolcat threads. ILX is great for intellectual tussling, but you guys hit hard, and unless you're v.good at standing on your own two feet right off the bat, it's intimidating, scary and nasty.

this is so sad!

just came to 77 and hang ten if someone doesn't like your opinion on the weeknd or whatever, it's such a bummer that people are afraid to contribute!

Z S, Tuesday, 13 December 2011 15:35 (twelve years ago) link

i think the internet has created this tendency for people to always have to feel "right" or that they are offering an opinion that seems correct or whatever. people worry too much about looking like they are "wrong," they also worry too much about what other people think.
