i made extra columns for listener comments and complaining

league of women voters, Monday, 12 December 2011 17:57 (twelve years ago) link

the only bon iver song I know is "skinny love" and they once played it while I was browsing in a bookstore and I will admit to being moved by it.

well in (advance johnson), Monday, 12 December 2011 17:57 (twelve years ago) link

i look forward to listening to these while i am at the office today

league of women voters, Monday, 12 December 2011 17:58 (twelve years ago) link

ha ha our VP just walked through the library while i was listening to the laziest river and she probably thought i was jamming out to smooth jazz

n/a, Monday, 12 December 2011 18:00 (twelve years ago) link

Ha. I was pretty indifferent to the first Bon Iver album, but I kind of love the new one. And I also take some glee in the fact that a lot of dudes who were down with Vernon's lo-fi strummy heartsick cabin songs can't wrap their heads around the adult-contemporary signifiers.

jaymc, Monday, 12 December 2011 18:00 (twelve years ago) link

Is there a setting I need to change on my end? Its only letting me view, not add anything.

I left my login in El Sandboxo, Monday, 12 December 2011 18:01 (twelve years ago) link

i don't know - i've definitely got you enabled to edit

n/a, Monday, 12 December 2011 18:02 (twelve years ago) link

Works fine now, maybe I just needed to close and reopen it.

I left my login in El Sandboxo, Monday, 12 December 2011 18:02 (twelve years ago) link

I'll think of a third song later. But for now I'm listening and enjoying!

well in (advance johnson), Monday, 12 December 2011 18:04 (twelve years ago) link

i don't think my comments column is going to work because you will have to identify yourself after each comment, which could be a PITA
well anyway, this came together nicely
good job everyone

league of women voters, Monday, 12 December 2011 18:06 (twelve years ago) link

Updated my Falloch, realized I linked to the wrong track.

Amanda, have you heard much Lindstrom?

jaymc, Monday, 12 December 2011 18:25 (twelve years ago) link

Nope. Should I?

league of women voters, Monday, 12 December 2011 18:47 (twelve years ago) link

Okay, I uploaded my three tracks. Was originally going to put up one of the Hebden/Reid/Gustafsson live tracks, but couldn't narrow it down to which one.

I left my login in El Sandboxo, Monday, 12 December 2011 18:48 (twelve years ago) link

damn that album is SO GOOD
i was gonna put one on there too -- lyman place (?) is the only one that's < 10 min

league of women voters, Monday, 12 December 2011 18:50 (twelve years ago) link

xxp I think you might like some of his stuff, maybe? Norwegian "space-disco." Cosmic pulses. Etc. Where You Go I Go Too is the one that people usually enthuse over -- it's probably his most focused work -- but I actually prefer his most recent collab with Prins Thomas, titled II.

Here is a track:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9DpAW4RWI18

(Fun fact: I sampled the bass line for my cover of Usher's "DJ Got Us Fallin' in Love.")

jaymc, Monday, 12 December 2011 18:54 (twelve years ago) link

That's a great album, I really love Lindstrom, particularly both albums with Prins Thomas.

my connection at work is slow (wonder if people are watching jersey shore in the library again? hm?) so i have had trouble listening to these songs very efficiently

argh

league of women voters, Monday, 12 December 2011 20:57 (twelve years ago) link

ok i have now officially jammed many of these jams. thanks for submitting!

also i would like to encourage anyone to participate even if you think your choices are not partic exciting or obscure or whatever you think they should be but aren't. if nothing else it's a funny little archive.

league of women voters, Monday, 12 December 2011 21:53 (twelve years ago) link

which means it needs some pitbull

league of women voters, Monday, 12 December 2011 21:53 (twelve years ago) link

I feel confident that I can find something a little more interesting than Pitbull. I just need to check out the playcounts on iTunes. A year is a long time to remember something.

john have you heard this song? i only heard it this morning but i feel like it's in your wheelhouse:

n/a, Tuesday, 13 December 2011 16:29 (twelve years ago) link

Yes! Of the songs on the Pitchfork singles list that I hadn't heard before, that's definitely one of the ones that I liked best.

jaymc, Tuesday, 13 December 2011 16:50 (twelve years ago) link

oh duh same place i heard it. i downloaded the album but have only listened to the first three songs, of which that one is clearly the best. i also downloaded the unknown mortal orchestra album based on their song on the pfork list ("ffunny ffrends"), the album's a little same-y but the tom vek fans on this thread might like it, same kinda lo-fi funk drum loops with indie songs on top of them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-36lCKovBg

n/a, Tuesday, 13 December 2011 16:53 (twelve years ago) link

The second half of the Sandro Perri reminds me of Arthur Russell a bit.

jaymc, Tuesday, 13 December 2011 16:57 (twelve years ago) link

And yeah, I liked that song, too. And the Thundercat.

jaymc, Tuesday, 13 December 2011 16:59 (twelve years ago) link

so the marriott hotel downstairs has a little illy coffee bar in their lobby, which also has a fireplace, and every day i think maybe i should go down there at lunch and get a coffee and sit by their fireplace, and today might be the day i actually do it. unless they kick me out for not being a hotel guest.

n/a, Tuesday, 13 December 2011 18:43 (twelve years ago) link

That sounds cool: did you do it?

jaymc, Tuesday, 13 December 2011 19:28 (twelve years ago) link

this coffee bar is ILLY

league of women voters, Tuesday, 13 December 2011 19:31 (twelve years ago) link

still waiting on whether or not i'll be invited to chicago for a final interview this month or not, but i got some good news just now. i had been despondent because i did the interview a week or two back and still haven't heard back, but it turns out that they interviewed 24 other people and just finished the process late last week. and just now, they called one of my references and apparently seemed impressed (fools!!). *crosses fingers*

Z S, Tuesday, 13 December 2011 20:45 (twelve years ago) link

hmm well it was more just like paying $4 + tip to drink a cup of coffee in a hotel lobby, and the chairs next to the fireplace were reserved, so it was mostly just overpriced and weird. i think the illy coffee bar is just in the morning, at lunch it turns into more of a bar.

good luck z_s

n/a, Tuesday, 13 December 2011 21:06 (twelve years ago) link

suerte to you, ZS -- and zip it with the "fools" business!!

I'm so grumpy today. grump grump grump

wore glasses and said things (thejenny), Wednesday, 14 December 2011 22:21 (twelve years ago) link

sarah is too, you should be in a grumpy club.

i'm doing pretty well. things are quiet at work because of holidays and one of our members sent a letter (actual snail mail) to our president highlighting some research i did for him so that was pretty cool.

n/a, Wednesday, 14 December 2011 22:23 (twelve years ago) link

my present shopping is DONE

this may be the earliest I have ever completed this bs

I am happy

sorry for happiness in the face of grumpitude, you can have some if you like

tumblr whineys (Cuauhtemoc Blanco), Wednesday, 14 December 2011 22:32 (twelve years ago) link

I am not grumpy in a way that begrudges others happiness. I'm just tired and kind of cold and having trouble concentrating so I feel like I'm working uphill against the wind and a few people in my life (none of you wonderful people) are irritating the crap out of me.

I have one more gift to buy for my mother, and I have no idea what to get her. It doesn't need to be anything fancy - just a small secondary gift to even everybody out. I'm drawing a blank. I'm also slightly hampered by not wanting to pack/ship anything too complicated.

wore glasses and said things (thejenny), Wednesday, 14 December 2011 22:35 (twelve years ago) link

I always like buying little kitchen and food goodies for my mom -- flavored vinegar/oil, or spices, candies, just generally ingredients she can't get out in the boonies where they live. this year she's getting a couple of pounds of israeli couscous to supplement her main present (a book)

tumblr whineys (Cuauhtemoc Blanco), Wednesday, 14 December 2011 22:37 (twelve years ago) link

we're not doing a lot of presents this year (except for evie and her cousin) but we still need to make pralines this weekend to give out

n/a, Wednesday, 14 December 2011 22:39 (twelve years ago) link

No one get me anything. Thanks.

Jeff, Wednesday, 14 December 2011 22:48 (twelve years ago) link

The couscous is a neat gift.

I just bought her something - a mounted heart-shaped map of Chicago.

I was super grumpy at my useless umbrella and completely inaccurate bustracker this morning.

shakur rump (I left my login in El Sandboxo), Wednesday, 14 December 2011 23:12 (twelve years ago) link

This is what I got. I am posting it because I think it's kind of precious, and also I miss my mom:

wore glasses and said things (thejenny), Wednesday, 14 December 2011 23:16 (twelve years ago) link

you guys i am a total failure at getting people to learn things
i'll take a little bit of grumpy if it means not feeling like everything i do is totally pointless

still, i can almost see a little tiny light i'm going to make it shine if it's the last thing i do

league of women voters, Wednesday, 14 December 2011 23:16 (twelve years ago) link

Sorry Leaguechera. You are a hero, even if you don't feel like it right now. (No sarcasmo.)

Jenny, that map is pretty cool.

Good luck, ZS.

Good luck, everyone.

I'm watching Beavis and Butthead, Season 1 on Netflix streaming. I wish it had music videos.

Commerce updates:

1. INSANITY: This Will be a Walgreens That Has a Sushi Bar and Nail Salon

http://chicago.racked.com/uploads/sushi%20and%20nails-thumb.jpg

"INSANITY" is actually pretty OTM.

2. The Bally's in the Century Mall was purchased by L.A. Fitness. I bet this means no more unbelievable $12/month membership.

jaymc, Thursday, 15 December 2011 04:27 (twelve years ago) link

You know what is very satisfying? Seeing Isaac destroyed in Children of the Corn. I really want to stuff that kid's squawking face with corn until he -----

shit. As I was typing that, the little shit came back from the corn.

FUCK I hate that kid's face and voice.
