maybe some scattered dicks had pressed the button vindictively in the previous six months, that doesn't mean the huge cluster of ppl asking Bimble to chill out and stop shouting and refrain from bombing multiple threads THAT NIGHT were in any way maliciously motivated

The Larry Sandbox Show (sic), Monday, 12 December 2011 14:58 (twelve years ago) link

I'm sure they weren't. Really. (honest)

Just, that's a really bad example.

it is, tbh

yeah I think Bimble is probably argument #1, 2, & 3 against sb

(I of course was not around on ILX when that happened though so)

iirc Bimble was mod-banned that night, not SB'd. just sayin'.

i don't think this is true. and if it is, it was because he was on the verge of being SB'd

i was ambivalent toward SB before that but when a prominent, likeable, and ultimately harmless (not to mention severely depressed) poster was SB'd, mentioned to at least one poster via email that being banned deeply upset him, and eventually killed himself, that was pretty much the turning point for me.

i'm not saying SB directly led to bimble's suicide. but i couldn't remember whether i was one of those 51 people or not, and i still feel like absolute dogshit to think i could have had something to do with it

k3vin k., Monday, 12 December 2011 16:23 (twelve years ago) link

You wouldn't believe it by the way you continue to treat posters around here like shit.

bloating forecast: ruff swells (p much resigned to deems), Monday, 12 December 2011 16:33 (twelve years ago) link

He mentioned it to me, actually, but I don't blame the existence of SB on what happened subsequently.

Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 12 December 2011 16:34 (twelve years ago) link

i am basically ambivalent about sbing, or not excited enough one way or the other to post about it, but you would think this thread, on this sb-free board, would make some kind of persuasive case for one side of the argument

Never translate German (schlump), Monday, 12 December 2011 16:34 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah I think we should leave bimble out of this thread from now on, its such a weird thing to bring into this and I'm regretting even tangentially contributing to it. It was just the idea of k3vin feeling guilty for anything was pretty lol to me.

He told chatz last week that he didn't mind being banned for a month and he enjoyed the time off ilx. He did say he didnt know if he would come back straight away. Now sadly we will never know.
His personal problems had nothing to do with ilx. But his friends on ilx did help him in the past. He was always appreciative of that.

yeah um the possiblility that Bimble was modbanned makes me feel v uncomfortable with what I posted upthread.

I'm really sorry.

massachusetts_capricorns_cru (henrietta lacks), Monday, 12 December 2011 16:47 (twelve years ago) link

I made myself a promise that I would never, ever get into this again, but here I am anyway.

I'm only back on ILX in the sandbox because there is no SB here. Which means that I actually feel comfortable again ~talking~ to people, joking with people, asking questions about music, trying to be supportive to friends going through a rough time - knowing that I will not be penalised at random, with an awful sword of damocles hanging over my head.

Because that *fear*, it doesn't stop my freakouts when I think I've been insulted, it doesn't stop my manic episodes (and it certainly doesn't stop clusterfucks *about* me) - but it DOES stop me from having sensitive conversations with people, which I fear will be misinterpreted and penalised without explanation.

You guys talk a lot about how you think SB ~should~ function and spend very little time listening to people who have been SB'd multiple times, and how it affects our behaviour - and how it doesn't. To me, this just comes off like a bunch of Republicans talking about how Abstinence Only sex ed really *should* stop teenagers from getting pregnant and being mystified that it somehow doesn't.

If the Sandbox was a massive open warfare between ppl relieved of the responsibility to be nice to one another, you might have an argument for keeping it. If anything, I see people forced to take responsibility for their own actions, and actually make the choice either ignore or engage with people.

But I've said this time and again, and been ignored, so I don't expect anyone to listen now. I'll enjoy this while it lasts, and go lurker again when you bring it back.

rekeningopnemer (Fotherington Thomas), Monday, 12 December 2011 16:48 (twelve years ago) link

I'd like the question to be "If it never came back, would you miss it and to what extent?"

flexidisc, Monday, 12 December 2011 17:05 (twelve years ago) link

yeah deems dont worry; when sb is gone we will have loads of threads clamoring for its return

bloating forecast: ruff swells (p much resigned to deems), Monday, 12 December 2011 17:07 (twelve years ago) link

I'm with FT on this one. It does seem odd to chase away awesome old-skool posters because of SB. I know of people IRL who are mortified of ILX because of the threat of banning by posting anything that long-term posters disagree with.

Why do you think ILX has such a large lurking contingent, while there only seem to be a couple of dozen regular posters? Hint: it's not the lolcat threads. ILX is great for intellectual tussling, but you guys hit hard, and unless you're v.good at standing on your own two feet right off the bat, it's intimidating, scary and nasty. Fold that into the fact that not everyone has skin made of iron and can shrug off mean, nasty, ad hominem attacks, and I don't think it's too much of a stretch to say that ILX's success is despite of SB, not because of it.

Not to defend SB, but large lurking contingents are the rule, not the exception: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1%25_rule_(Internet_culture)

Is there a way of SB-ing lurkers?

los krampusinos! (pomplamau5), Tuesday, 13 December 2011 12:32 (twelve years ago) link

Not all of them btw, just the ones who lurk in an annoying way.

los krampusinos! (pomplamau5), Tuesday, 13 December 2011 12:32 (twelve years ago) link

Ones that look at threads 'funny'?

Jilted John and Marsha (MarkG oo la showaddywaddy), Tuesday, 13 December 2011 12:37 (twelve years ago) link

xp I did not know that! That is interesting!

Just because it's the norm tho, doesn't make it right. ILX seems to be a LOT nicer than other messageboards, but we're far from perfect. I trust the mods to chuck anyone out who is being for-real disruptive, and I'm really not sure that SB isn't doing more good than harm.

You failed, you didn’t eat the whole pizza (NotEnough), Tuesday, 13 December 2011 12:38 (twelve years ago) link

wait ilx is nastier and harder hitting than other sites or it's nicer than other sites

Was there more or less really out-there ad hom etc pre-sb

Struggle to think of the last newly-christened lurker that got sb'd for disagreeing with ppl, long-term ilxors or otherwise

Really don't see the angle here.

What are lurkers so afraid to post that would get them sb'd, essentially

lotsa chelsea fans out there somewhere, just sayin'

los krampusinos! (pomplamau5), Tuesday, 13 December 2011 12:57 (twelve years ago) link

is that a threat!

bloating forecast: ruff swells (p much resigned to deems), Tuesday, 13 December 2011 12:58 (twelve years ago) link

ILX is a lot nicer than other sites imo, probably because we seem to have an older demographic than most messagaboards.

In the conversations I've had, lurkers are afraid to post anything that runs contrary to the accepted thread's opinion because they think they and their views will get demolished and, eventually, they'll get SBd. Whether they actually would or not isn't really the point, it's the threat that's putting people off.

You failed, you didn’t eat the whole pizza (NotEnough), Tuesday, 13 December 2011 13:04 (twelve years ago) link

Footie threads seem to be the exception to this, since I think footie fans are used to arguing their challopsy opinions against all comers. I would assume the dynamics on other ILX sports threads/boards are similar.

You failed, you didn’t eat the whole pizza (NotEnough), Tuesday, 13 December 2011 13:07 (twelve years ago) link

ftr i don't SB people for saying stuff i disagree with, just really asinine or challopy stuff that i disagree with or for trying to make ilx boring like other boring message boards

they think they and their views will get demolished and, eventually, they'll get SBd.

Why would they think they'd be SB'd? Because they disagree with someone? Nice one, ILX.

Derek Pringles (Deep in the Tony Hart land), Tuesday, 13 December 2011 13:12 (twelve years ago) link

yeah how dare you do something imaginary that never actually happens ILX, for shame

Angles that bitch (Julie Lagger), Tuesday, 13 December 2011 13:13 (twelve years ago) link

I didn't think it did!

Derek Pringles (Deep in the Tony Hart land), Tuesday, 13 December 2011 13:13 (twelve years ago) link

tbh if ilx discourages a percentage of boring opinions this is a win

Angles that bitch (Julie Lagger), Tuesday, 13 December 2011 13:15 (twelve years ago) link

Why would they think they'd be SB'd?

Because as soon as someone says something people disagree with, it turns into a massive ad hominen insulting clusterfuck, especially if they try and defend themselves, and an SB seems to be the obvious conclusion to that, no?

You failed, you didn’t eat the whole pizza (NotEnough), Tuesday, 13 December 2011 13:21 (twelve years ago) link

not necessarily, you can always get your SB in at the start and then move on to the ad hom

Angles that bitch (Julie Lagger), Tuesday, 13 December 2011 13:22 (twelve years ago) link

yeah but that's what i'm saying, there's no basis for that belief at all, sure what can you do if someone's tellin you that?

I'd sb them

bloating forecast: ruff swells (p much resigned to deems), Tuesday, 13 December 2011 13:23 (twelve years ago) link

but again, by definition you can't ad hom a new poster cos you don't have any hom to ad, so i still think it's a case of attacking the idea.

but in all seriousness, a bit of slapstick intellectual vigour isn't a bad thing in a world full of Youtube comment threads

Angles that bitch (Julie Lagger), Tuesday, 13 December 2011 13:24 (twelve years ago) link

that is so far from the ilx norm imo NE
