i truly don't think that the free agency model is the way to win, btw -- the heat are an incredibly unique situation, not a prototype

I agree this is inane. You are starry-eyed over potential and, after living through the Celtics of Gerald Green and Jefferson and Perk and top picks year after year, I'm less enamored of possibilities versus proven talent.

Not having a center is the real kick-in-the-balls for the Clips if they make the trade, and the Warriors offer sheet is murder if you take it or leave it.

They aren't going to win with Paul in the next two years, but hopefully they'll be good enough to sign both stars and fill in the blanks around them. That potential is higher than the young core they have now, in my opinion.

But as I said, it's the Clips so they're likely fucked no matter what they do. I'd just like to see them role the dice for once instead of always accumulating parts that leave asap.

If all those guys reach the peaks you project than of course it's a dumb trade. But if any of them besides Griffin actually do I'd be pleasantly surprised; even more surprised if it's while they're on the Clippers.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 12 December 2011 02:41 (twelve years ago) link

Outside of the Spurs almost all the champions of recent vintage have been built through free agents or trades. Three in one fell swoop is the rarity, as is it all falling in place in one go.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 12 December 2011 02:43 (twelve years ago) link

i'm sorry but all of the guys on the clippers are already better than gerald green, jefferson was a very good nba player, and perk was a key component of a team that won a title and probably would've won another had he not blew his acl out

v-shasty, Monday, 12 December 2011 02:45 (twelve years ago) link

i'm not starry eyed over potential, i'm being realistic that chris paul, as good as he is, isn't worth essentially six first round picks

v-shasty, Monday, 12 December 2011 02:46 (twelve years ago) link

bledsoe will be a top 15 point guard, aminu at worst is a decent sixth man.
― v-shasty, Sunday, December 11, 2011 8:35 PM (8 minutes ago) Bookmark Permalink

I'm not that high on Bledsoe at all. He has serious issues with his shooting. Yeah it's possible but it's also possible he won't even be a top 30 pg imo.

I love Aminu but he also has bust potential.

Matt Armstrong, Monday, 12 December 2011 02:47 (twelve years ago) link

Like I said I wouldn't do this trade as reported but not because of aminu or bledsoe.

Matt Armstrong, Monday, 12 December 2011 02:48 (twelve years ago) link

what massive free agent is going to sign w/ the paul + griffin + caron superteam?

v-shasty, Monday, 12 December 2011 02:48 (twelve years ago) link

The vast majority of guys in the nba are first round picks! If 6 is too many, what about 5? Or is 4 your cut-off? What if they through in a guy drafted in the first round in return?

We aren't going to see eye-to-eye on this no matter how many times we go back and forth. And we can't even share a drink over our preseason bar conversation through the net.

I'll toast you later if I grab a beer from the fridge.

Ugh - throw in not through in. I need to proofread.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 12 December 2011 02:51 (twelve years ago) link

well the massive free agent would be Dwight

four seems about right to me, yes

hahaha gtfo matt

v-shasty, Monday, 12 December 2011 02:52 (twelve years ago) link

dwight and blake feel like very similar players and not too complementary

am0n shumpert (dayo), Monday, 12 December 2011 02:52 (twelve years ago) link

I would pull the trigger on the CP3 to clips deal, just to see CP3 and Blake blow out their knees in a single play

am0n shumpert (dayo), Monday, 12 December 2011 02:52 (twelve years ago) link

you guys aren't seriously about to discuss the possibility of chris paul and dwight howard signing with the clippers, right?

v-shasty, Monday, 12 December 2011 02:53 (twelve years ago) link

it would be awesome if it happened

I wouldn't trade for paul in the first place if he didn't extend.

Matt Armstrong, Monday, 12 December 2011 02:55 (twelve years ago) link

but if he did, yes I think Dwight would be interested.

Matt Armstrong, Monday, 12 December 2011 02:55 (twelve years ago) link

Gordon, Bledsoe, Aminu, 2 Clippers 1st rounders but not the Minnesota pick. I think that's fair.

According to the "Trade Machine" they don't need to put Kamen in it for salary purposes.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 12 December 2011 02:55 (twelve years ago) link

is blake still on his rookie contract? what other big contracts do the clips have?

tons o' room

Matt Armstrong, Monday, 12 December 2011 03:02 (twelve years ago) link

huh, funny that doesn't work... anyway if they didn't sign deandre they would be like 22m under the cap next year.

Matt Armstrong, Monday, 12 December 2011 03:03 (twelve years ago) link

if they sign paul & howard sure... that's a good trade

but otherwise there isn't another crop of wade/bron/melo/amare/howard/d will/paul players just following these guys like an assembly line of franchise altering FAs

v-shasty, Monday, 12 December 2011 03:04 (twelve years ago) link

I kinda agree with EZ though - yeah you have stories like the thunder and the melo-less nuggs and that time when the rockets won 50 in a row w/o yao and/or t-mac, but those teams never go deep in the playoffs

for every thunder there is a hawks

am0n shumpert (dayo), Monday, 12 December 2011 03:04 (twelve years ago) link

the way to win titles is to make good picks. This goes for all sports. You can occasionally collude your way to a title like the Lakers did with Shaq but in general you win by drafting well and signing value free agents: mavs, bulls (90s), Spurs etc etc etc.

Matt Armstrong, Monday, 12 December 2011 03:07 (twelve years ago) link

yeah but the hawks signed joe johnson to a bajillion dollar contract, so they screwed themselves. also they don't have anyone nearly as good as blake griffin.

the current bulls are likely a closer comp imo

v-shasty, Monday, 12 December 2011 03:08 (twelve years ago) link

yes, blake has the chance to be dirk/duncan level good. they need to build out a team around him, not try and emulate the heat or knicks.

v-shasty, Monday, 12 December 2011 03:09 (twelve years ago) link

lol lets all take a moment to pause and consider joe johnsons contract

am0n shumpert (dayo), Monday, 12 December 2011 03:11 (twelve years ago) link

I would lol so hard tho if cp3 and Dwight ended up on the other team that plays at the staples center

would be worth it just for kobes soundbites

am0n shumpert (dayo), Monday, 12 December 2011 03:13 (twelve years ago) link

. . . especially if they began beating the lakers by scores like 110 -- 72 every game.

haha

k3vin k., Monday, 12 December 2011 04:40 (twelve years ago) link

shit is goin down

The Clippers would send the Hornets center Chris Kaman, backup second-year guard Eric Bledsoe, second-year forward Al-Farouq Aminu and the No. 1 draft pick they got from the Minnesota Timberwolves that is unprotected in the 2012 draft, considered to be one of the best in recent years.

v-shasty, Monday, 12 December 2011 07:34 (twelve years ago) link

clips wd be sikk with griff, gordon, and cp

q: are we not bel biv men? a: we are bel biv devo (m bison), Monday, 12 December 2011 12:15 (twelve years ago) link

am0n shumpert (dayo), Monday, 12 December 2011 13:07 (twelve years ago) link

The trade as submitted would cost the Clippers guard Eric Gordon, center Chris Kaman and forward Al-Farouq Aminu. It would also include Minnesota's first-round draft pick in 2012.

i know jordan posted same thing, but apparently its been submitted now, this sounds abt right fwiw - like the hornets arent getting full value, but theres serious potential there - one legit young player, one serious draft pick, one lol huge expiring contract, and one guy who has maybe an off chance of being good or w/e

Cooper Chucklebutt, Monday, 12 December 2011 14:18 (twelve years ago) link

man I wish they could have done it w/o giving up gordon

am0n shumpert (dayo), Monday, 12 December 2011 14:21 (twelve years ago) link

agreed m/l w/jordan via that huge argument up thread that adding bledsoe and the other draft pick to the trade wouldve gutted the clips to an extent that they likely never wouldve recovered - recall that the celtics held onto rondo when they traded for kg - although that trade prob wouldve been irl full value for paul, its instructive as to why teams never get full value for their stars

Cooper Chucklebutt, Monday, 12 December 2011 14:21 (twelve years ago) link

yeah but w/o gordon its kinda a bag of shit

Cooper Chucklebutt, Monday, 12 December 2011 14:22 (twelve years ago) link

now if motherfucking donald sterling would just sell the team we might be onto something, cant the government send him to jail or w/e

Cooper Chucklebutt, Monday, 12 December 2011 14:26 (twelve years ago) link

Weird to keep Bledsoe not Gordon. I guess the thought is there are more wings than point guards and Bledsoe has more time before an extension needs to be offered.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 12 December 2011 14:26 (twelve years ago) link

i imagine it was just the package wasnt good enough w/o gordon

Cooper Chucklebutt, Monday, 12 December 2011 14:27 (twelve years ago) link

gordon's a wing?

am0n shumpert (dayo), Monday, 12 December 2011 14:28 (twelve years ago) link

yah hes a 2

Cooper Chucklebutt, Monday, 12 December 2011 14:29 (twelve years ago) link

Some reports are that NOLA wanted Bledsoe more, I'm guessing as a direct replacement for Paul and because they have more time to judge him before offering big money.

But they should be able to get one of the bazillion point guards from Minny; reports are saying they've signed Barea.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 12 December 2011 14:31 (twelve years ago) link

They at the end there being Minnesota. Too many theys in that post.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 12 December 2011 14:31 (twelve years ago) link

thats weird to want bledsoe more, seems like gordon is p clearly the superior player, and there are like one million good young point guards and no good young shooting guards

Cooper Chucklebutt, Monday, 12 December 2011 14:42 (twelve years ago) link

if i were them id be tempted to try to sign gordon to a long contract right now as his value is likely to increase this season

Cooper Chucklebutt, Monday, 12 December 2011 14:44 (twelve years ago) link
