go listen to your workingman's dead someone where else, ryan braun - this is a family friendly town and we want nothing to do with your likes

I hope that's the extent of it.

Olney is conflating a vote that's already happened, MVP, with one that hasn't, HOF. No HOF player has ever been removed from the Hall, and if a prospective MVP tested positive in late August or September, I think it's safe to say he would not go on to win the award. I don't see a parallel there. (And, as I've always said, I think caution in HOF voting--where there is ample time to revisit a player's candidacy--is sensible.)

But my source -- and again, this is from Braun's end and not MLB -- familiar with the test's findings says the "prohibited substance" was not a performance-enhancing drug or steroid of any kind. And the source says there has "never" been a result like this in the history of the MLB testing program.

The source said MLB "knows that Ryan is telling the truth) and firmly believes the postive test will be overturned. Pretty amazing stuff, huh?

i thought there was no way i could like braun more (of course, that affection nosedived when i heard he was using PEDs) but if it turns out he's a stoner... <3

what's it going to be?

Mordy, Sunday, 11 December 2011 19:27 (twelve years ago) link

"the test's findings says the "prohibited substance" was not a performance-enhancing drug or steroid of any kind"

Mordy, Sunday, 11 December 2011 19:27 (twelve years ago) link

i guess it could be some kind of medically treatment?

Mordy, Sunday, 11 December 2011 19:28 (twelve years ago) link

well idk i guess either report could be wrong at this point

v-shasty, Sunday, 11 December 2011 19:28 (twelve years ago) link

i mean mlb hasn't actually said anything -- from what i can tell we just have dueling reports b/w espn & rosenthal

v-shasty, Sunday, 11 December 2011 19:29 (twelve years ago) link

it would be an unusual turn of events tho -- my guess is that it will be some sort of "supplement" or something that's ambiguous enough for braun to escape heavy public scrutiny but not enough to get his appeal overturned

v-shasty, Sunday, 11 December 2011 19:31 (twelve years ago) link

if he's a stoner he's off my must-fuck list

plus if "there has 'never' been a result like this in the history of the MLB testing program" it sure the hell ain't pot etc.

All this discussion of false positives and unfair leaks reminds of when A-Rod's anonymous test result came out. Only the exact opposite.

Dr Morbius, Sunday, 11 December 2011 19:59 (twelve years ago) link

i read that more as never before has a result like this been treated like this, but if you're right that it means never before has a test result ever been like this than i'd guess it's something medical related showing up

xp

v-shasty, Sunday, 11 December 2011 20:13 (twelve years ago) link

this all bad news, but this line from the latest update on MLBTR has me loling:
Braun's original test for performance-enhancing drugs was "insanely high, the highest ever for anyone who has ever taken a test, twice the level of the highest test ever taken,"

Everything about this seems weird. Braun always seemed like a pretty smart guy so I don't think this is just a case of "I can't believe he was dumb enough to take PEDs".

ha, what i was saying a few days back:

http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-1213-braun-kemp-mvp-20111213,0,2301712.story

Dodgers' Matt Kemp would win MVP award over Ryan Braun in a new vote
Times survey of 20 writers who submitted ballots with the Milwaukee star winning shows that the Dodgers outfielder would win by a large margin if Braun's positive test for a banned substance is upheld on appeal...However, an official change isn't expected.

Rollins to stay w/ the Phillies for 3 more years apparently!

Mordy, Sunday, 18 December 2011 02:54 (twelve years ago) link

so Mat Latos is now out of the NL West, that is good for the Giants.

still pissed off at my team and their horrible moves this off-season so far. the owners are broke apparently.

Bee, Sunday, 18 December 2011 04:39 (twelve years ago) link

yay, Rollins is an essential part of the Phils' advancing decrepitude!

Dr Morbius, Sunday, 18 December 2011 14:18 (twelve years ago) link

SD got a haul for Latos. This trade is all in how it plays out.

Yonder Alonso can hit. I'm not sure he will hit for huge power, but he looked like a guy that knows the strikezone and had some composure in the batters box. The guy kind of reminded me a bit of Sean Casey.

I'd think like Harang, Volquez will probably get some benefit from just not having to pitch half their games in GABP. Volquez has pretty bad control, even when he is going good, the guy will burn 100 pitches in 5-6 innings to get it done.

Never saw Grandal or Boxberger play, but they were a 1st and 2nd round pick in the past few years. Grandal is a switchhitter and supposedly pretty good with the glove, but Devin Mesoraco was already ahead of him in the line to get to the Reds. Boxberger was already being talked about to possibly make the club in the bullpen coming out of spring training, so he might be on the Padres this year. Grandal is only in his 2nd year out of the U, so they might have him start at AAA or something next year.

I've only seen Latos pitch a couple of times. He was really overpowering on the Reds both times I saw him pitch. I don't know if the guy is an ace, but he definitely has upside and time on the side for the Reds to find out. You either got to be able to strike them out or have them hit the ball into the dirt to pitch in Cincy's field - as that place will give up the HR pretty easy, especially when it is hot outside.

earlnash, Monday, 19 December 2011 02:42 (twelve years ago) link

i think it's a really good trade for the reds -- latos is a fantastic pitcher, and they traded two prospects who were blocked anyway

v-shasty, Monday, 19 December 2011 02:43 (twelve years ago) link

just seems like a fair trade all around, except for the part where the padres traded for a top first base prospect last off season

v-shasty, Monday, 19 December 2011 02:44 (twelve years ago) link

good trade -- hope wieland and/or erlin work out for the padres
